Lena Legion Wins 1st Round District Title Lena's American Legion baseball team took the first-round title in the 13th District American Legion tournament after winning three of, four tournament games at Krape Park over the weekend. Lena opened its drive to the title with a 5-1 victory over the host Cedarville legion team Saturday. Kurt Miller pitched a four-hitter and struck out four in going the distance for the victory, while Greg Stockton and Roger Bidlingmaier paced the winners' six- hit attack with two each. Starter Bill Plambeck took the loss for Cedarville.* Game two pitted Lena against Polo, and a 12-hit attack made it easy for the eventual champs, 13-3. Dennis Heer did the pitching, limiting Polo to just four lits while striking out 10. Greg Andrews, with three hits, four runs scored and three batted in, was the game's hitting star. Polo then met Cedarville in game three, with the loser facing the end of the line in the double-elimination tourney. It was Polo which got bounced, by an.8-7 score in a 10-inning marathon. After sppotting the visitors a 2-0 first- nhing lead, Cedarville appeared to ake charge with a five-run outburst in tie third. The lead grew to 6-2 in the ifth, then 7-3 in the sixth, as the teams natched scores. But Polo rallied for our runs in the top of the seventh to orce extra innings, and three extra rames were played before Cedarville m'shed a run across in the bottom of he 10th to win it. Plambeck, Mike Cassidy and Mark toschulte had two hits apiece for the /inners, who gained another shot at .ena with the victory and made the nost of it with a 1-0 triumph in a pitch- ng-masterpiece Sunday morning. Heer and Miller, who shared pitching-duties for Lena, permitted just one hit,>a triple by Cedarville's Eric Bohnsack. Plambeck and Mark Mathews teamed up to throw a shutout for the winners, yielding only two hits. Cedarville scored the only run of the ball game in the sixth inning. Lena wore its hitting shoes to Sunday afternoon's championship game, however, pounding out 13 hits in a 9-8 victory over Cedarville in a do-or-die battle for both teams. Andrews, Todd Russian, Terry Weegens and Stockton had two hits apiece for the winners, who trailed most of the way after Ce- iarville responded to their three-run first inning with a four-run burst in the first. • The game was without a score until the./ifth, when the teams traded single runs, and after Lena pushed four across in the top of the sixth, Cedarville countered with three to square natters at 8-all. A single run in the top of the seventh gave Lena the 9-8 victory and the tournament championship. Lena now moves into the district finals against tournament winners from Mount Morris and Rock Falls at Krape Park Saturday. The district winner moves on to sectional competition at Dixbn beginning July 26.
