The school said the operation, successful in 21 of 31 patients over the past 10 months, would "do away with the need for a heart transplant in 85 per cent of cases Study shows cancer rare among nuns By JULIAN DeVRIES Republic Medical Editor NEW ORLEANS - If statistics mean anything, Hamlet's advice to Ophelia — "Get thee to a nunnery — go!" contains more truth than drama. It could add five years to the lives of American women. Reporting to the llth annual science writers seminar of the American Cancer Society here, Dr. James T. Nix and Dr. Con J. Fecher said surveys among the nation's Catholic nuns revealed less breast cancer and a longer life expectancy among them than among other women of comparable age. ACCORDING TO Dr. Fecher, statistical consultant at the University of Dayton at Dayton, Ohio, he began his investigations in 1925. At that time, he said, nuns had a life expectancy two years longer than for other women even though their death rate from tuberculosis was nearly twice as high. A second study in 1945, also conducted by Dr. Fecher, j showed a marked drop in the ! incidence of tuberculosis and an addition of three years to the nuns' two-year edge on I life. IN 1962, Dr. Nix, clincial assistant professor of surgery at Louisiana State University School of Medicine, began re- j search in the hope of finding answers to explain the longevity and low cancer incidence. ; "As yet," Dr. Nix sairV'we can offer no scientific explanation for these observations. Although statistical proof must await the passing of the years, some of our findings support the theory of a direct relationship between the duration of menstrual life and cancer of the breast. Proof also must await analysis of data obtained from a current questionnaire sent to the 116,536 nuns in the United States." ONE ASPECT of this survey now beginning to emerge from data already collected, Dr. Nix said, "may change the picture somewhat," since the mortality rate from cancer of the breast among nuns over 65 appears to be twice that among other women of like age. Because of these findings, Dr. Nix said, research will be aimed at attempts to discover if a physical or chemcial link exists between menstruation, sexual life, and breast cancer among women. Kay, chief of cardiac surgery at the school, told of the new procedure at a meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in San Francisco lale Wednesday and the school issued a release yesterday. The patients were suffering from a blood clot in the heart muscle, a condition known as myocardial infraction. In the operation, which takes 15 minutes after the chest is opened, the stricken portion cf the heart is shut off by stitches sewn through strips of surgical felt. The remaining active area of the heart "was able to improve its beat enough to raise blood pressure to normal." the release said. Half the survivors were back at work in four to six months. CONFERENCE OPENS BANGKOK (UPI) —Prime conference for economic de- Minister Thanom Kittika- velopment of Southeast Asia, chorn of Thailand yesterday Nine nations are attending opened the fourth ministerial the session. The patients ranged in age from the early 50s to the early 70s and were about equally divided between men and women. The school quoted Dr. Kay as saying the operation is "exciting and far better than heart transplantation." It is performed under light an- esthetice and does not require the use of a heart-lung machine.
