LOOK ™»«MINUTEMAN PRESS OF UKIAH (707) 463-2434 With the theme of "Ukiah, Then & Now, 1876-1987," a community celebration of huge proportions will take place Saturday. Scot. 26 at 1 p.m. Mayor Colleen Henderson will lead the citizenry in celebrating the completion of Ukiah's new Civic Center — the restored and renovated Yokayo Elementary School building on Oak Street.' The parade begins at 1 p.m. with the ihcme of "Ukiah, Then & Now." The Ukiahi Band will be featured with flags, young people and old, new cars and old. Depicting the move from "old to new," the parade will march through the center of town ceremonially emptying out the old city offices and moving into the new. It is hoped that everyone will join in at the end of the parade and progress to the new facility. Also on hand will be entertainers performing at the Civic Center during the day's activities following the parade. Mayor Colleen Henderson will be in charge of the dedication ceremony which will begin at the conclusion of the parade. City council members, former Ukiah mayors and city council members, school officials, and other city dignitaries will take part in the'program. A time capsule for the new building as well as a planting of Ukiah's city flower, the lilac, will also be part of the ceremony. AH types of food will be sold by local service clubs during the day. Ukiah Lions Club will sell balloons, soda pop and snacks; Concilio Latino, Mexican specialties; Business and Professional Women, cookies and desserts; Soroptimists, hot dogs and coke; Job's Daughters, cotton candy. Kiwanis will sell hamburgers; Ukiahi Safe Rides and Students Against Driving Drunk, lemonade and iced tea; Vintcr's Association, wine; and Vichy Springs, mineral water. The Ukiah Rotary Club will feature a barbecue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the Sun House Guild will serve wine and coffee with the meal. Radio announcer Bill Stccle will be Master of Ceremonies for the entertainment which will continue throughout the day. Among those featured will "Ukiah, Then & Now" — A Community Celebration Saturday, Sept. 26,1987 1:00 p.m. Parade begins at Police Station (Corner Smith & Mason) Schedule of events at the New Civic Center Building Oak and Seminary streets Dedication Ceremony Civic Center tours Variety show Barbecue — Ukiah Rotary Club Ukiah Street Dance — Ralene & Sweetwater Art Show .and Antique Car Show (Seminary Ave.) Historic exhibit Food and drink booths Memorabilia, commemorative buttons and programs T-shirts 2p.m. 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. 8 p.m. to 12 midnight 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. be Porno Indian dancers, Concilio Latino dancers, ballroom and tango dancers. Mcndocino College Jazz Choir and Jazz Quartet will perform as well as Earth Trek, Aikido gymnastics, Mendocino Ballet Company, Carol Bartolomci Dance Studio.and the Barbcrshoppcrs. Ukiah Players will pi isent "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe." There also will be a Children's Theater presentation, "Sword Play" — a fencing demonstration, and performances by Ukiah Prome- nadcrs and the Ukiah Symphony. Scenes will be presented from Carousel and Pirates of Penzancc. Tours of the new facility will be conducted between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Historical exhibits will be displayed in the new complex and will consist of pictures and memorabilia about local history, the city flower, the city seal, construction of Yokayo School, historic Ukiah homes and city buildings. An outdoor an show will be seen along the park on Seminary Ave. with local artists featuring local scenes. A fashion show of historic clothing is also planned. The festivities will conclude with a street dance from 8 p.m. until midnight which will feature the sounds of "Sweetwater. A printed program will be part of the memorabilia to be given away and will be comprised of drawings by Bard Zcnscn of the newly restored building and the city flower as well as the agenda of the day, historical text, photos, and acknowledgements. Commemorative buttons displaying the lilac and a drawing of the building will also be given out. Flags will line Seminary Avenue and a banner in front will all be part of the decorations. The Ukiah Garden Club will furnish flower arrangements. This community celebration staged by the citizens of Ukiah, September 26,1987 will surely be a day to remember.
