W. Welch Named New Esso Research President L. W. Welch Jr. has been named president and a director of Esso Production Research Co.. effective April 1. Welch will succeed E. C. Holmer as the top officer of the research affiliate of Humble Oil & Refining Co. Esso Production, with a staff of about 800, engaged in exploration and production research for Mumble's domestic operations and for the foreign affiliates of Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. Its offices and laboratories are at 3120 Buffalo Speedway. Holmer is leaving Esso Production Research to become a senior vice-president and direc- tor of Esso Chemical Co.. also a Jersey Standard affiliate. Welch has been serving as coordinator of long range planning in Humble's economics and planning department. The native of Sand Springs, Okla., received a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Tulsa in 1943. He then joined Carter Oil Co., which has become a part of the Humble organization. Welch has held a number of posts with Jersey affiliates in Oklahoma, Canada and Louisiana. He assumed his present position last December. E. C. HOLMER Your Daily TV TeleScope By CYSTH3A LOWKY AP Television-Radio Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Stuart Little. E.B. White's adventurous hero, was five inches tall and weighed five ounces without his Ice skates. He was the second son of a surprised New York couple, had a normal brother named George, but Stuart looked like a mouse — and his closest friend was a talking and reading pigeon named Margalo. Stuart, in White's children's book, had marvelously interesting experiences. It is hard for an adult to recapture the excitements of childhood, but this reporter recalls the wonderful stories spun by a grandfather who toH of a family of tiny people, no taller than a finger, living in a normal-sized world. Sunday night NBC's "Children's Theatre" gave "Stuart Little" a loving, straight-forward interpretation, matching precisely the words of the story read by Johnny Carson. We actually saw Stuart in his bed made of clothes pins, standing staunchly on the deck of th« "Wasp" during the great race of model ships across Central Park lake and flying over New York hanging on the legs of his pigeon friend. Even so, it seems almost a shame to give specific form to fantasy which allows a child's HAVE YOUR CAR INSPECTED NOW imagination to roam free. I wish that Stuart could have been left inside the covers of the book so that each child could have pictured him as he chose. CBS' "Candid Camera." whose high points are too often! the moment when the victim! discovers he has been had, j turned up Sunday night with two j particularly bright and amusing j segments. One involved several j children trying to deliver a tele-1 phone message and getting things pretty mixed up. The other had a series of patient interviewers at a dating bureau trying to get information from a pair of fake lovers.
