Thrash Mayor ATTEST: Sally Andrews City Cleric Dec. 28-1S77 MEMPHIS. Tenn. rAP»- Of- ficiais at » Memphis hospital say they won't try to run uown the identity of the young couple who donated 11 envelopes, each containing $1.000. to the facility Tuesday "When someone gives you $11,000 in green money, you don't argue with their motives," said Carl Simmons, administrator for St Judc Children's Research Hospital. "Knowing they wanted to be anonymous, I didn't pursue It." St. Jude, which charges no fees, treats children with catastrophic diseases. The hospital was founded in 1962 by entertainer Danny Thomas who named it in honor of St. Jude. the patron saint of the hopeless. Paul Parham, a hospital spokesman, said the man and woman, who appeared to be in their late 20s or early 30s, approached the hospital's information desk Tuesday afternoon. They said they wanted to discuss making a donation. They were taken to Sandy Vogel, an administrative assistant. With only a minimum of explanation, the couple gave Mrs. Vogel 1! envelopes, each containing $1,000 in !20 bills. 'They just gave it to us, we don't know who they are," Mrs. Vogel said. "They just said St. Jude. had blessed them with some favors." Parham said the man and woman were apparently from out of town. "The only reason we say that is they were observed getting into an airport limousine," he said. No one attempted to follow them once they left St. Jude. "If somebody gives you $11.000 and says we don't want anybody to know about it, the first thing you check is to make sure the $20 bills are legitimate," Parham said, "The second thing is not to try to follow them." Parham said bank officials verified that the money was good. "It is strictly an honest up and up gift," he said. Parham said a man and woman called St. Ju«ie last week and, without identifying themselves, asked the procedure for making an anonymous gift so that it could be earmarked for equipment. "They specifically wanted the money to go for microscopes in our hematology lab," he said. A telephone receptionist referred the couple to Mrs. Vogel and that was the last heard of it until the couple walked into Mrs. Vogel's office Tuesday afternoon, Parham said. "Evidently it's the same couple because they did specify they wanted the money to go for microscopes in the hematology lab." St. Jude gets thousands of dollars yearly in anonymous donations, Parham said, but the donors usually specify that it is given in honor of some individual.
