In the New Testament He says both: "My peace I give unto you" and "I have not come to bring peace but a sword." Actually, however, there is no contradiction here because "His peace" brought to him a storm. Men hated, opposed, persecuted, harassed, resisted and fought him. He did bring inner serenity to HIS followers, but this inner cairn did not mean that there was not conflict going on outside He promised His men this peace but He also told them that men would set upon them as wolves devour sheep, that thev would be arrested, flanged and brought to trial before kings and governors, and that men would think they were doing a service to God when they killed them. Our Lord did not mean that' it was good to be put in jail and killed — He did mean that is was good to stand for righteousness He knew that when men stood for the right, the evil ones would fight them. He simply warned them that they could expect to be hated and mistreated We who call ourselves "followers of Jesus" often forget that He said "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take uo his cross and follow me For whoever would save his life will lose it and whoever loses his life far my sake will find it." Today when Christians, following their master soeal- against e\i! act against injustice, help the weak, or even lose their enemies they will be fought' Sin, Satin and the oowers of darness in our own city w.ll revile them. persecute them and say all kinds of evil against them falsely 1 If were were really following Christ and not our own smK.I \vav i ( we were looking for ways to serve Him instead of overlooking our "wn and cur neighbors evil, if we were committed to H:s Kingdom and H^ righteousness instead of our own interests and our prosper it'- would not our lives o"d the life and work of our Church be quite different- 1 Would we not be converted —turned around' 1 Indeed we would be opposed and fought at ever\ turn --- but would not our lives be then truly "peaceful" 3 Jesus did not say that it is gooo never to have controversy He said that it is good to deny yourself, fake up your cross and follow Him "Blessed are you when men revile you and^ persecute you . . rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven." *».
