Gold Members of the Washington United Methodist Church honored their oldest member, Mrs. Eunice Gold, on the occasion of her ninety-first birthday, Friday evening December 16 with a surprise dinner party at the Sheraton Inn in Hope. A Christmas centerpiece, birthday cake, and poinsettias decorated the table in the private dining room. Preceding dinner, pictures were made and Mrs. John Rushing eulogized the honoree for her long and useful life of service as the wife of a Methodist minister, the late Rev. J. Oscar Gold. Rev. John of- Rushing, pastor, fered the blessing. After dinner Mrs. Gold opened her gifts. Besides the honoree others attending the party were Mrs. Gold's daughter, Mrs. Ann Thrash, Guy Grigg, Rev. and Mrs. Rushing, Mrs. Mattie Ball and Miss Brenda Ball of Nashville, Mrs. Marguerite Moses, Mrs. Willie Rowe, Mrs. Mary Medearis, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Etter of Washington and the hostesses in charge of arrangements, Mrs. Eunice Long and Mrs. Lilla Porterfield, also of Washington, who presented the guests favors at the conclusion of the party. You need counseling, and BO does your husband. There are mental health clinics in your area that offer excellent help, and it's free for those without funds. If your husband refuses to go, go without him. Don't let your post dictate your future. DEAR ABBY: Why is the bride expected to write all the thank-you notes for the wedding gifts? Most of the gifts are for the home—to be shared by the couple. So assuming the husband isn't illiterate, why shouldn't he write half the notes? DEAR ABBY: I recently went to tho hospital for some exploratory surgery as I was concerned about the possibility of cancer. Two neighbor women, whom I do not know very well, cnme to visit me there. Tliov took turns asking prying questions as to the nature of my illness, whether more surgery would be necessary, etc. I tried to fend off these questions as best I could. After they left, a member of n fraternal group to which I belong called on me. The same line of questioning was pursued. Only this person spent nearly an hour telling me about "similar cases" in which all the patients died— of cancer. I was depressed beyond words. Why do people visit the sick and leave them sicker? DEPRESSED DEAR DEPRESSED: Because common sense is BO uncommon. My advice on bedside manners: Make your visit short, sweet and cheerful. Leave the coughs and the kids at home. Ask no questions. If you can't do that, stay away. Getting married? No matter how little you have to spend or how unconventional your UfoHtyle, it can be lovely. The case for snacks By Gaynor Maddox As ads for food products tell it, home is where understanding parents and well- washed teenagers sit down together to enjoy regular, well-cooked meals in a tension-free atmosphere. "Says who?" asks today's teenager. Why in these days of abundant food, more money and supposedly less kitchen drudgery, do more and more teenage boys and girls follow a nutrition pattern that is off balance? Generally, the answer might be that today the teenagers abandon the family eating pattern because of natural protest against parental control. Or, the lure of the snack is too great to resist. At a recent national forum "Parenting — the Crucial Years," in Washington D.C., Dr. George Owen of the University of Michigan FOOD FOR AMERICANS Grits move North By Aileen Claire NBA Food Editor A casserole of grits and green onions is a savory way to serve enriched grain food to your family. Southerners for generations have enjoyed grits as a side dish for any meal. Most northerners had never heard of grits — let alone tasted them — until President Jimmy Carter brought them into tho White House dining room. Grits are truly an American dish; the first English settlers learned of them from our native Indian population. For the uninitiated, grits are ground hominy — or dried, processed kernels of corn. This particular grits dish may be likened to a quiche without a crust. For added flavor and color, top with shredded Swiss cheese and crumbled cooked bacon. Serve with a salad as an entree or as a side dish with a favorite meat such as ham. GRITS 1 N' GREEN ONION BAKE 1 cup enriched white hominy quick grits 1 teaspoon salt 4 cups boiling water 2 cups (8 oz.) shredded natural Swiss cheese '•2 cup butler or margarine V? cup milk 8 crisply cooked bacon slices, crumbled ' j cup green onion slices ? eggs, beaten 1 teaspoon dry mustard GRITS quiche. and green onions combine for a down-home Stir grits slowly into salted boiling water in large heavy saucepan. Cook over low heat about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in remaining ingredients. Continue cooking over low heat until cheese is melted. Pour into greased 8-inch square baking dish. Bake in preheated 350-degree oven about 50 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes; cut into squares. Makes 6 to 8 servings. VARIATION: Substitute 1 cup enriched white hominy grits for enriched white hominy quick grits. Cook in 5 cups salted boiling water 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. .NEWSPAPER f.'NTERPKJSE ASSN.) Some people believe that they can ensure clear weather on a particular day by eating everything on the table the evening before. School of Public Health, commented, "Poor people worry their children don't get enough to eat. Affluent parents are concerned their children get too much. In some manner, both groups blame the children's constant snacking at home, in school and on the way home. "The problem is in what they are eating. Not the habit of snacking." The national forum, "Parenting — The Crucial Years," is a direct outgrowth of a study commissioned by the Consumer Center of General Mills on "Raising Children in a Changing Society." Teenage indifference to sound nutrition is due to many influences. Here are some pertinent quotes: "I'm sick of the old harangue. Does everything that's good for you have to be dull?" "I like fun food. I wish my mother would stop telling me to eat this and don't eat that." "I want things that taste good — that's all I'm interested in." "My father has some wacky ideas. He thinks I must eat 'he-man' foods. Makes me eat things I don't like because he says they'll make a man of me." Some of the other reasons why young people do not find happiness at the family dinner table are: the mother's inability to cook well, family quarrels and nagging and parents' unwillingness to adjust meal hours to the teenagers' social and school activities. The fast pace of teenage activity is another reason. "One of the biggest problems is finding a time when a busy teenager is willing to sit down and really eat a meal," reports Dr. W.L. Morgan, head of the State University of Pennsylvania's Department of Child Development and Family Relationships. "Often they are so busy with school activities or with their friends that Is is extremely difficult to get them to take the time. They are likely to satisfy their hunger quickly and then want to dash off to something else." It is futile for parents to complain about teenage snacking. It has become an established part of the daily pattern. It is of major importance to them socially. So accept it with good grace. But try to upgrade it, the experts advise. Snacks can, If wisely chosen, supply good nutrition. It is what they choose, not where, that is of nutritional importance. Whether eaten at the luncheonette around the corner from the school, at the drug store counter, at the ball field, the movies, at dances or while watching TV, snacks can have food value. POLLYS POINTERS Polly Cramer Rubber needs help By Polly Cramer POLLY'S PROBLEM DEAR POLLY — Mildew accumulates on the rubber seal that is around my refrigerator doors. The humidity has been high so the mildew is quite bad and I had tried several things but none of them clean it all off. Any suggestions will be appreciated. — IRENE. i DEAR IRENE — Mildew weakens anything nnd when stains are deeply imbedded they may be impossible to remove. You might try washing with warm suds with two tablespoons peroxide added to the water and then wipe off, rinse and thoroughly dry. Bleach in water will sometimes work, too, or a cloth just barely dampened with denatured alcohol. Sometimes the rubber is too far gone for real help. — POLLY. DEAR POLLY — My decorator told me to use steel wool cleansing pads on brass light switch plates and door knobs and this worked wonders. — Mrs. J.S.B DEAR READERS — I slightly dampened such a pad before cleaning a brass knocker that had been very hard to clean. — POLLY. DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve concerns storekeepers who insist on putting their price stickers over the directions on small packages (especially medicines) as well as on the larger ones, too. Baking instructions, etc., are often hidden. Thank you for listening and I hope some of the stores will notice this and stop the practice. — TED. DEAR POLLY — To make things easier for my husband during the hunting season I cook all his meals in advance and seal each in cooking bags. All he has to do is boll water on the camp stove and he never has any pots or pans to wash. This even works with scrambled eggs. Also, n great idea for vacation if yours is a camping family. — SIS. DEAR POLLY — One of the readers wrote that she spilled coffee on her beige rug and I have never had the following treatment fall even for old ground-in coffee stains. Wet a clean cloth with water until It is saturated. Add some peroxide to the wet rag and lay over the stain. Hold a hot iron over the cloth and rub LIGHTLY back and forth, just barely touching the cloth until the cloth gets dry (in which case rewet it) or until the stain is gone. If the operation must be repeated add fresh peroxide each time. — MRS. J.N. DEAR POLLY — I want to share a discovery with everyone. I have found a cure for those pesky bits of lint and thread that stubbornly cling to a rug when vacuuming or carpet sweeping. I swish a slightly dampened mop lightly over the troublesome area and then these offenders disappear when I vacuum. Apparently the static electricity causing the problem is released. — HELEN. DEAR POLLY — My Pointer is for those who do crewel and needlepoint and spend too much time threading a needle. Perhaps the needle threader is broken as they are fragile or may be lost so I use a six-inch length of fiahing line and It works like a charm. Make a loop and pull it through the eye of the needle. Russell entertained the First Baptist Choir with n reception at the Heritage House after their presentation of the Cantata, "I Believe He's the Son of God," by John Wilson. The serving table was covered with a white satin cloth decorated in the Christmas motif. An arrangement of white carnations and holly graced the table. Mrs. Becky Parks poured > punch and Mrs. Tom Duncan' coffee from silver ap- pointments. Dainty sandwiches, nuts, mint*, dips, chips and Christmas cakes were served Mrs. Roy Taylor entertained the fifty guests with n Christmas story, "The Beggar and the Star." The choir chose this time to present their music director, Steve lenders with n gift. Christmas music was played throughout the evening while the guests enjoyed conversation and fellowship. HEARTY CHICKEN-RICE CASSEROLE 1/2 cup each chopped green pepper and onions 1 cup sliced celery 1 can (2 ounces) plmlontos, diced (1/4 cup) 2 cups cooked rice 2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped 2 cans (5 ounces each) boned chicken 2 chicken bouillon cubed, crushed 1/2 cup mayonnaise Salt and pepper 1/3 cup soft bread crumbs Combine green pepper, onions, celery, pimlentos, rice, eggs, and chicken. Blend bouillon cubes into mayonnaise; add to rice mixture. Season to taste and toss lightly. Spoon into a 2-quart casserole. Top with bread crumbs. Bake at 360° for 30 minutes. Makes 6 servings.
