POLITICAL RINGSIDE Speakership Race to * Be Settled Jan. 8 By GERALD BOGAN Iowa Daily Press Writer Des Moiues, (IDPA)—The hottest speakership race in a decade will be settled by the caucus of house republicans in Des Moines Saturday. Most observers consider that G. T. (Gus) Kuester of Griswold, who is seeking re-election to the speak- ership, has the "inside track," but 2 contenders claim they are gaining in strength. The contenders are Fred Schwengel of Davenport and M. F. (Mike) Hicklin of Wa- Observers recall that in 1941 house republicans took 5 ballots before the caucus could decide on a candidate. G-ov. Robert Blue, patronage, then the Wright county representative, won on the linal ballot from John Irwin of Keokuk, who J was seeking re-election. There were 5 candidates in that spirited fight, but only Blue, Irwin and Henry Burma of Allison, who later served 2 terms as speaker, were in the balloting when the final vote was taken. Blue was within 4 votes of victory on the *> 4th ballot after Irwin had led on the first ballot. David Dancer of Lamoni, now secretary of the board of education, A. H. Avery of Spencer, who will be the dean of house legislators when the session convenes, and F. A. Latchaw of Wilton Junction, were the other candidates. Hold Majority The republicans held a majority of 86 to 22 in the 1941 legislature. , This year the GOP has 79 house members and the democrats 29, so whatever the GOP caucus decides will be the outcome unless the candidates bolt the party caucus decision and decide to carry their fight to the floor of the house. Democratic leaders have indicated they will not have a candidate for the speakership. L Kuester, 60, will be serving his ^ 7th term in the house. He was chairman of the Beardsley-for- Governor committee during the primary. Kuester's friends say they have enough votes lined up to assure his election as speaker. ^* Kuester won't comment on his chances and says he'll wait until all the votes are counted. If elected speaker, Kuester would be the I 14th presiding officer in house! history to serve 2 terms. ' Schwengel, 41, has served 2 terms in the legislature. He long has been a champion for schools and was a strong Beardsley backer in the primary campaign. Serves i Sessions Hicklin, 40, hts served 3 sessions in the house. He drew fire from the Iowa Farm Bureau 2 years ago when he introduced legislation to withhold county appropriations from county Farm Bureau organizations. It is around Hicklin that the anti-Kuester movement is centered. While Beardsley is maintaining a "hands-off" policy, his associates say he would like to have Kuester as speaker. Hicklin claims the contest will be "awfully close" and that he can win. Schwengel says he has strong support among the new members of the house and doesn't think Kuester or Hicklin have enough votes to win. The speaker of the house draws an additional $1,000 for the session and also controls committee Shepherd Staff Links England and America Lexington, Ky., (U.R)—Two continents recently were linked here by a shepherd's staff. A shepherd's crook from Woodford, England, mounted on £ wooden staff from Woodford, Ky. was presented to the Rt. Rev. William R. Moody, bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Lexington.
