"What the market needs is some dramatic news," a broker said, "like a real breakthrough in the Vietnam peace talks." Losses held a slight advantage over gains at the start, but the margin widened as trading continued. Of 1,541 issues traded, 936 declined and 383 advanced. New highs for the year came to 17 and new lows to 114. Cited as dampening the market were continued concern about the administration's determination to cool off the economy; some profit taking, and the selling of stocks by investors to raise cash to pay income taxes. Volume was 10.11 million shares, compared with Tuesday's 12.36 million shares. Blocks of 10,000 shares or more traded on the New York Stock Exchange totaled 55, compared with 51 Tuesday. Gold issues generally were higher, with Dome Mines climbing 3. They apparently were reflecting higher gold prices in some European markets. Conglomerate issues, under pressure recently, generally were lower. Gulf & Western Industries, Loew's Theaters, and Ling-Temco-Vought each lost a point. Jones & Laughlin Steel was off 1% at 28Mi. L-T-V said it had extended its offer to acquire shares of J & L. Fifteen of the 20 most- active issues on the New York exhange were lower and 5 higher. Brunswick, most-active, gained 1% to 21 V\. Brunswick and Union Tank Car earlier his week called off a planned combination. Three blocks of Great Western Financial totaling 136,800 shares were traded. Great Western was second most- active, off IVs at 26V4.
