Cavalier an economical, attractive package The Chevrolet Cavalier has a weighty task. It was sent into the "first-time buyers" market to compete with the likes of the Escort, Corolla and even Chevy's own Prizm. Although at one time, I would have been hard-pressed to consider the Cavalier in the same breath as two of the aforementioned vehicles, I can now offer this car as an alternative - or at least put it on the list. Cavalier has become a more contemporary car with aerodynamic styling and a more passenger-friendly interior. The exterior design is rackish and rounded, helping to cut through the air and retain the Chevrolet theme. The interior is comfortable without a lot of busyness. You get what you need and not a whole lot more than that. Chevrolet has made sure we have a choice of models. There are five different levels in the Cavalier lineup, including: Coupe, Sedan, LS Sedan, Z24 Coupe and Z24 convertible. So no matter what your style, the Cavalier has a model that should work for you. From two doors or four, top up or down, basic transportation or up-level convenience, Cavalier works hard to fit into your lifestyle. I chose the Z24 two-door coupe for this test for a selfish reason: I wanted to have fun with my drive, and the zippy Z24 was the way to go. Equipped with a twin cam, 2.4-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission, I was able - and the car willing to flick through the turns of my favorite country road with glee. The Z24 is also equipped with a more sporty suspension system and performance tires that aren't CLICK AND CLACK TALK CARS w By TOM and RAY IAGLIOZZI Cell phone a cause of death of 2-year-old Dear Tom and Ray: My 2'/2-year-old daughter, Morgan Lee, was killed as a result of an auto accident that occurred on Nov. 2, 1999. My vehicle was hit broadside by a man who admitted that he did not stop at the stop sign because he was distracted while dialing his cellular phone. . Cause of death - blunt head trauma. He ran into the rear passenger door at 45 mph, right where Morgan was sitting. He received a total of $50 in fines. I need to speak out on this issue. I cannot live with what happened to my daughter. I was not aware prior to the accident just how dangerous the roads have become with the saturation of cell phones. I now know. I've discovered some outrageous statistics. I am now just putting myself out there in the hopes of creating public awareness. I am working with my local senator to get pending legislation through. Please tell people what they can do to help me fight for my daughter. Thank you. - Patti Pena TOM: Jeez, Patti. What a tragedy. Morgan Lee is gone, and your life will never be the same. Nor will the life of the poor jerk who hit you. He was probably just checking his voice mail, saying hello to HIS kid or doing something he could have easily waited until later to do. And now he's got to live with See CLICK, Page B-2 ON THE ROAD By RON MOORHEAD available on the more reserved models, both of which accentuated my adventure. The power from the Z24 engine is admirable at 150 horsepower, but at the expense of emitting a tad bit more noise and harshness that creeps into the passenger compartment. It isn't enough to drive you out, but it is noticeable. The five-speed manual transmission is a bit notchy through the shifting pattern, yet once familiar with the nuances you tend to forget any objections. The interior space is welcoming, with a newly redesigned instrument panel and easy to read gauges. Naturally, a vehicle that is aimed at a younger market must have a good sound system. The Cavalier comes through with four choices. Fortunately, one system incorporates both cassette and compact disc playback in one unit. The front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive but not overly firm.
