Illinois Girl Best Speller She Tops 61 Others With 'Oustaceology' WASHINGTON U* - Sandra: (Sandy) SIoss, 13, of Granite City. 111., is the new national spelling bee Aampion. Sandra, an eighth-giader at St. Josephs School, won over 61 other the most toughly contested of the 28 national spelling bees tponsored by Scnpps-Howard Newspapers and other papers. It took 541 woids— 116 moie than ' last year— before Sandia finally won over Jean Copeland, 12, of Prescott, Anz. Finally Stumbles After successfully spelling many a tongue-twistei , Jean finally stumbled on the comparatively short but unfamiliar uord "abbacy," which means a place where an abbot lives She spelled it "abbosy." Sandra spelled it conectly and then clinched her victory by managing "cmstaceology," which means the study of shellfish. The new champion, a tall, blue-eyed girl who likes art, dancing and sports, received first prize of "$500, a trophy cup and a free trip to New York. Jean, as second-"place winner, received $300. Naomi Klein, 12, Brooklyn, took •third place in a contest which found the girls ahead of the boys all the v,ay. Thirty-seven girls compared to 25 boys won their way to the tournament and the last of the boys. William Kelley, J.2, of Kennett, Mo., was spelled down in the 15th round. The final contest between Sandra and Jean found both missing on ■ome of those final tough ones - After the contestants are down "to two, contest rules provide that -when a word is missed by one, the other must spell it correctly and .then spell still another.
