He repeatedly refused to release them in exchange for a Navy helicopter flown in at his demand. U.S. Marines and Filipino soldiers and policemen ringed the white frame one-story building of the Prudential Bank and Trust Co. just inside the main gate of the base 50 miles northwest of Manila. One hostage reported seen at a window was a pregnant woman. Navy officials said they did not know whether any Americans were among the captives. The bank is used mostly by Filipino employes of the base, but U.S. sailors going on liberty usually cash dollars for pesos at walkup windows. The gunman entered the bank Tuesday afternoon, told everybody inside they were hostages and ordered the manager to telephone the Marine guard at the main gate of the base nearby that a robbery was in progress, the Navy said. Shortly after, the gunman reportedly demanded to talk with Rear Adm. Huntington Hardisty, the new base commander. That was denied him, and he demanded a Navy helicopter. Around the Baldwin house, it seems as though there are two things we need most often— another occasional table, and more storage. This versatile cube table functions well in almost any situation—storage for extra blankets, out-of- season clothes, records, telephone books. And inside is a removable rack to keep the corks moist on 16 bottles of «ine, or (o tidy up a stack of magazines. If we could just teach it to make chicken salad sandwiches! The hardwood trim around the edges and a clear polyurethane finish will keep it strong and handsome over years of spills, bumps and scuffs. (If it lasts in our home, it will make it anywhere!) And only one 3 by 6 sheet of plywood is needed for the sides, top, and nail heads. Then sand the plugs with the grain of the hardwood strips until they are flush. The door is attached by nailing the remianing piece of hardwood trim to the bottom front of the completed three- sided cube. Then attach the door to the trim strip with hinges. After you have Installed the door, you will want to stain or paint your cube. We prefer a dark walnut oil stain. Seal the surface with a satin finish polyurethane varnish which will protect it from water steins, (and this does a good Job of rejecting little hand messes. 1 The actual assembly of the inner removable rack is very quick, but it is important to drill the holes accurately in each of the square supports. A good way to align them Ls to tape several strips together, one on bottom. We used three-quarter- inch-thick wood core cabinet plywood. The edge trim and supports for the inner rack can all be made from a 5-foot length of 1 by 12 hardwood cut into strips. The rest of the inside rack is assembled from one- quarter inch wood dowel rod. Cut the three-quarter inch plywood into six pieces, each 16Mi inches square. Make sure that all sides are good right angles so that they fit together correctly. To assemble, nail and glue the solid wood strips to the plywood squares to cover the exposed edges. both nails and glue as shown in the picture. Glue and fit short lengths of one-quarter inch dowel into the holes over the Assemble the cube sides, back, top and bottom squares (with attached strips) using Glue and nail or screw the back Inlo the sides. Fit, glue and fasten the bottom between the sides, then glue and fasten the Op down into the sides. To order, send check or money order mndc out to: MAKIN' THINGS P.O. Box 52189 Dept.
