-THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL- BLACK BART DAYS MONDAY, JUNE 28, 1993 — 3 Nation's largest gay event draws everyday people RickOotding Horses were the highlight at the Black Bart Days parade Saturday In Redwood Valley. A variety of riders were on hand Including the 4-H members, above, and the bandit at left. A barbecue at the Lions Park followed with events such as sack races, horseshoes, face painting and others. Proceeds benefited the Redwood Valley Community Church to send youngsters to summer camps and winter retreats. SAN FRANCISCO ( AP) — The nation's largest yearly gay event draws not only drag queens and radicals but also doctors, computer programers and construction workers — everyday people who don't get the spotlight but who make up the bulk of the gay community. "The media simply describes the most outrageous costumes and strangest people. They only show the things heterosexuals will think are odd," said Anthony Mohamed, 25, a gay physics student from Toronto. Mohamed was among the estimated 400,000 people who on Sunday attended San Francisco* s annual Lesbian and Gay Freedom Day Parade, a celebration known for its uninhibited revelry and flamboyant costumes — or lack thereof. But the contingent of lesbian physicians belied those stereotypes. "Being a lesbian isn't necessarily the first thing I tell people about myself," said Mana Hobson, 36, a geriatric specialist at a veteran's hospital. "Neither is being a doctor for that matter. But they're both part of who I am and I'm proud of it," she said. "We can get you lesbian plastic surgeons, primary care physicians, geriatrics specialists, you name it," said Ramona Doyle, 34, a pulmonary and critical care specialist at the University of California at San Francisco. "It's not like we go to work and wear a button saying 'Lesbian Physician.' But it is important that America knows that we're their doctors," Doyle said. One spectator, Ramona Ramirez, a 36-year-old Oakland resident, pointed to men in frilly dresses square-dancing their way down the street. "They're fun to watch," she said. "But they're just the tip of the iceberg. ... " "I'm sure most of the people I stand next to in line at Safeway don't realize I'm gay. That's fine, as long as they don't assume that everyone around them is straight. We're everywhere, even if they don't know we're there," Ramirez said. San Francisco Superior Court Judge Donna Hitchens, 45, rode in the parade with Municipal Court judges Mary Morgan and Herb Donaldson — all of them gay. "We're not apologetic about who we are in the world," she said. "We're here today because it's important that people realize we're gay and lesbian and working to serve the community." A phalanx of strollers 50 parents strong led the Lesbian and Gay Parents contingent. "Dykes with Tykes," read banners next to the Dr. Seussian "Gay Father," "Gay Father," "Gay Father's Daughter" signs carried by two men marching proudly with their 20-year-old daughter. On the sidelines Tom Steketee, 40, held up his twin 2-year-old daughters, Deva and Jess, to see the group go by. "My arms are going to fall off, but this is why we live in San Francisco," he said. A Card of Thanks Hazel Dansing The family of Hazel Dansing would like to express their thanks and appreciation to all the many friends and relatives for their kindness and thoughtfulness during our time of sorrow. Oc SOCCER: SIGNUPS NASA considers extra day in orbit for Endeavour SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) — Endeavour's astronauts shuffled today's work schedule for a time-consuming repair on a water-recycling experiment. The eighHlay mission was supposed 'te'"epd\Tjies^y njprnirig"^ with a landing jit Kennedy Space Center, but NASA spokesman Jeff Carr said that could be moved to Wednesday if today's repair is successful and the weather cooperates. The astronauts, during a space- to-ground news conference, sounded as though they wouldn't mind an extra day in orbit. Julia Roberts marries Lyle Lovett NEW YORK (AP) — Actress Julia Roberts and singer Lyle Lovett were married Sunday at a hastily arranged marriage, her publicist said Lovett's band performed "Angel Eyes" in honor of Roberts during the small church ceremony in Marion, Ind, spokeswoman Nancy Seltzer said Roberts, 25, met Lovett, 35, when they filmed 1992's "The Player," Seltzer said. It was the first marriage for both. The wedding was planned in two days, Seltzer said. "It happened rapidly, very rapidly" said Lovett's manager, Ken Levitan. "Lyle's extremely excited. He couldn't be happier." Roberts married Lovett during her three-day break from filming John Grisham's "The Pelican Brief in Washington, D.C., Seltzer said. Lovett is on a national tour and was to perform withhis Large Band Sunday night in Noblesville, Ind, an Indianapolis suburub. A reception for the 75 wedding guests was scheduled prior to the concert, Seltzer said. Actress Susan Sarandon and actor Tun Robbins were among the guests at St. James Lutheran 7 Church. Their 4-year-old son, Jack J -, Henry, was the ring bearer, and W &Q\JlZ actor Barry Tubb accompanied W *" Roberts' 'down the aisle, she said * j~f« Robbins starred in "The Player," * U • * and Lovett played a detective on his trail. Roberts and Sarandon had "I've just had a big smile on my face since we blasted off several days ago," said first-time space flier Nancy Sherlock, who did most of today's repair work. "It's been just absolutely spectacular." ^"Ttie"National' Aeronautics- and 1 ' SpacS Administration's space station office is sponsoring the water- recycling experiment, which" involves running potassium iodide- tainted water through filters for purification. A line in the system was clogged. Engineers who have developed a prototype system to recycle wash water, urine and perspiration into drinking water aboard a space station want to see how well their equipment works in weightlessness. Taste tests already have been Conducted on the ground and indicate the recycled water is clean and acceptable for crew use. • NASA^stimates four astronauts aboard a space station would use about 50 pounds of water a day. Without a recycling system, about 10 tons of water would have to be shipped to the station every 90 days. When: JUNE 30* Whar.: YOKAYO SCH.
