THE NEW OWNERS of Freeport's largest downtown hotel, Thomas and Mary ««f agai i'J? au . S f at the entrance to ">« Freeport Motor Inn, with their two sons, . !l e a ,"? I L avW ( . right) ' The 0 ' Ha g an s taught the eight-story hotel from the estate of the late Tony Agiou and his widow on July 1. Formerly the O'Hagans owned and operated a motel In Peoria.- Journal-Standard Photo. "' / Peoria Man Acquires ort Motor Inn Freep The eight-story Freeport Motor Inn at 109 S. .Galena Ave. has been sold to the former owner and operator of a Peoria motel. Thomas L. O'Hagan took over operation of the downtown Freeport hostelry July 1 after purchasing the property from the estate of the late Tony Agiou and his widow, Elizabeth. The Agious had owned the hotel since April 1970. Mrs. Agiou will 1 continue to oper- \ate the Eugene Hotel in Monroe, Wis. O'Hagan is a retired Air Force career man who entered the, hotel and motel business in 1967. Concerning plans for the Freeport Motor Inn, O'Hagan said he hopes to improve the facilities, putting in automatic elevators as a first step. Sleeping rooms will be rejuvenated and meeting rooms improved, he said. "The bright spot of the hotel is the restaurant and bar (Twin Dragons) and these will continue," O'Hagan said. "I like Freeport very much. We looked at four to five hotels in the East before buying this. I'm amazed at the downtown business area and the State Bank Center." He said he first looked at the Freeport property about a year ago. His wife and their two sons will be active in the management. The one-time prestige hotel of Free; port, the Motor Inn Has felt competi- j tion in recent years from motels on the «city's outskirts. Built in 1928 at a cost of $500,000, the ; 154-room hotel was known as 'the Hotel i Freeport until 1969 when the name was changed after the State Bank took possession in a foreclosure auction. Extensive remodeling was done that year. The hotel has about 30 permanent residents. O'Hagan said he would like to double that figure. For years'the hotel was an overnight sleeping point for Illinois Central Gulf train crews until the railroad erected its own motel next to the Wallace Yards, in 1972. O'Hagan operated the 103-unit Sands Motel in Peoria before coming to Freeport. During his eight years in the motel field he has operated facilities in Springfield, Rockford, Beardstown and Centralia and Cleveland, Ohio. He is a native of the Central Illinois town of -Athens. , Quincy Welcomes First Viet Refugees QUINCY, 111. (UPI) - Quincy received its first Vietnamese .refugee family with open arms Monday night. Gusty Storm Howls Across Oklahoma By United Press International Seventy-mile-an-hour winds howled across the central Oklahoma town of Chickasha Monday night, ripping the roof off a supermarket, damaging homes and toppling power lines. Three persons were injured, none seriously. The gusty storm climaxed a sweltering day that saw the mercury climb to 99 at Hobart, Okla., and 102 across the border at Wichita Falls, Tex, Rains were generally light, but some rain gauges in the Chickasha area measured nearly four inches. Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers sighted two funnel clouds over south central Oklahoma but there were no reports of damage or injuries. Heavy rains soaked portions of Alabama Monday, foorcing some evacuations and knocking out power to some areas. Anniston, Ala., in the eastern portion of the state, got six inches of rain Sunday night arid early Monday. Several householders in the area were flooded out of their homes. ' , A line of electrical storms knocked out power to about 20,000 homes in Birmingham, Ala, Streets were flooded in Anniston, and police said water was "up to the headlights" in neighboring Oxford for a time.
