It's time for Rabbits! by Mortimer Norton W HEN A layer of good trucking snow covers the cornfields, and whitens the ground in the woodlots and swamplands, it's time to go hunting for rabbits. There's no more action-liiled way or spending a tew 'hours outdoors with shotgun or small bore rifle than by knocking over these fur-clad targets when they're on the run. Whether you're alter the crafty cottontails of the lowlands, the big-footed hares or snowshoe rabbits of mountain forests, or the giant jacks of grassy plains, you're in for fast shooting and exciting sport when they go streaking over the ground on dog-puzzling trails to gain refuge in their secluded shelters. The pursuit leads you over cornfields, meadows, ravines, hillsides, among sparse groves and evergreen tree swamps, along stone or rail fence and briar hedges, and wherever brush piles abound. Here the powder puff tailed bunnies live, feed, and breed; and here you may experience an eventful day's gunning. Cottontails, being clever creatures, take the dog on long and intricate routes through underbrush and marshy spots, and into a maze of alders, temporarily eluding their chaser by bounding over logs or crossing shallow streams to blot out the scent. But soon the baffled beagle picks up the broken trail, and the frenzied barking resumes. You are alert to every sound and movement, watching for a fleeting glimpse of the rabbit as, customarily, he doubles back on his tracks, or comes in a circle, to confuse and delay the hound even more. Standing beside a runway, or atop some stump where there is a clear view of the area, you are ready to shoulder the gun, aim, and fire when the charging object comes within effective range. It's nerve-tingling sport; it's a test of good judgment and marksmanship. In all, the adventure of bagging these field and forest dwellers appeals to several million of us throughout the country. Do you get your share of the tremendous take of rabbits? It's not hard to do, and it doesn't retjuire a great deal of time, for these animals are everywhere. Reports are that cottontails and snowshoe rabbits, in their respective homesites, are still close to the peak population in covers of the Midwest, and they should provide plenty of action locally this season. with Hi-lex Powder^ wise mommy knows little clothes need beaut/ care, tool FOR FINE FABRICS Safe and gentle... best for nylon, orlon, rayon, wool, ffne cottons and colors !
