1 2-MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14,1987 THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL 'Wizard Of Oz' producer dies Suspect arrested in hit-run deaths BEVERLY HILLS (AP) — Filmmaker Mervyn Le Roy, who brought "The Wizard of Oz" dream world to movie screens, gave Lana Tomer her first job and introduced Ronald Reagan to then-actress Nancy Davis, has died. He was 86. The Oscar-winning producer- director of more than 75 motion pictures, including such memorable films as "Little Caesar," which made Edward G. Robinson a star, "Quo Vadis" and "Gypsy," died Sunday morning at home. Le Roy, who had Alzheimer's disease and had recently been hospitalized for respiratory problems, was found dead by his wife of 41 years, Kitty, said his business manager Given Eaton. Such Le Roy films as "I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang" in 1932 were the best socially- conscious movies of the time, but Le Roy was best known for his diversity arid ability to handle any studio assignment. In addition to producing "The Wizard of Oz," the producer- director's diverse stream of box- office hits included "Tugboat Annie," "Anthony Adverse," "Three Men On A Horse," "Waterloo Bridge," "Johnny Eager," "Madam Curie," "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," "Without Reservations," "Little Women," "Million Dollar Mermaid," "Mister Roberts," "The Bad Seed," "No Time for Sergeants," "Home Before Dark" and "The FBI Story." Le Roy won a best director Oscar in 1942 for the film "Random Harvest." Three years later, he won an honorary Oscar for a 10-minute short-subject film about tolerance, "The House I Live In," starring Frank Sinatra. He was awarded the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1975. He was remembered fondly and sadly Sunday by the President and Mrs. Reagan, Karl Maiden and George Burns. It was Le Roy who, decades earlier, introduced the Reagans. "We always referred to him as our Cupid. Mervyn Le Roy was a special part of our lives," the Reagans said in a statement released by the White House. "He was one of the top directors for, many years in Hollywood. It was just a pleasure working for the man," said Maiden, whose voice quavered with emotion when told that Le Roy had died. Maiden starred in Le Roy's "Gypsy." SAN JOSE (AP) — A San Jose man has been arrested for investigation of three counts of second- degree murder after a hit-and-run accident in which his car struck and killed three children playing in the front yard of a home, police said. Jose Santa Bugarin, 26, was Californians face huge health costs Future care for retired government workers SACRAMENTO (AP) — Californians are facing huge future costs to pay for health care for retired government workers, experts say. Assemblyman Dave Elder, D- Long Beach, who chairs the Assembly's Public Employees and Retirement Committee,' says the unfunded liability for post- retirement health care promised to 1.4 million state, school district and local government workers could reach $100 billion. "Many government agencies don't even know there's a liability," Elder said in an article published Sunday in the Sacramento Union. "They've no idea. It's scary." Sherry Swanson of the San Francisco based conslutling firm of Coopers and Lybrand says much the same |hing. "Many government sectors haven't done any actuarial study at all," she says. "We are talking about stupendous amounts of money. This is a major issue around the country." Elder, whose committee has held a series of hearings into public health care costs, says it's hard to estimate the combined health care debt facing state and local agencies. "But we estimate the amount would be as much as $100 billion," he added. A 1984 study projected that the cost for providing health care for members of one major government arrested and hospitalized after the Saturday evening accident, according to police spokesman Howard Carter, who said Bugarin had $20,000 worth of arrest warrants for driving after his driver's license was suspended in 1982. In addition to the murder charges, Bugarin also was arrested for investigation of conspiracy. Bugarin was driving a 1978 TransAm when die car jumped a curb on South King Road and hit four children playing outside while the father of two of the children worked on the family car. pension system, the Public Employees Retirement System, will climb from $1,950 per member in 1984 to more than $20,000 in the vear 2000. Sauve says that the PERS is now paying for health insurance on a pay-as-you-go basis. "That's the most expensive way to do it," he said. "Look what happened to Social Security. It was pay as you go" Some agencies are trying to head off big future costs by prepaying for post-retirement health care benefits. "We found that if we didn't have a funding program we would soon run out of money for retirees/' said district spokesman Gigg Powers. "So based on what's so obvious we decided to prefund the program." ANN LANDERS Is your fish a lefty? Dear Readers: Remember the letter from the woman who wanted to know if a cat could be left- handed? Well, of course it can, but the mail generated by that query blew my mind. For example: Ever hear of a left-handed fish? I learned that flat fish, such as flounders and sole, begin life as symmetrical, vertical-swimming creatures, but they turn over to one side when young and remain horizontal all their lives. An article by David Gunston in Animal World said there is a pattern of left and right in all nature, just as there is in the world of humans. This goes for paws, flippers, claws and limbs. The natural bent, left or right, presents no problems. It is only when humans interfere that things go awry. For instance, a dog.taught to perform a trick, such as shaking hands with one forepaw, becomes bewildered if it is suddenly expected to do the trick with the other paw. If a change is forced, the poor dog may become nervous and incapable of learning more tricks. In one zoo, out of 200 parrots under close observation, all of which use their claws to hold nuts, 15 were left-handed and two were ambidextrous. It is also known that elephants use one tusk more than the other. The favored tusk becomes worn away by digging while the other tusk grows larger. Crickets and grasshoppers tend to be right-handed. They produce the chirp by rubbing the right wing over the left leg with its comb-like edge. But katydids, which are similar insects, are usually left-handed. Dear Ann Landers: Another sleepless night. I decided I better not put it off any longer. I need your hdp. Shortly after I married, I began to have the same dream over and over. There I was, dressed in my wedding gown, nervous as can be, waiting for my husband-to-be to come and get me. I was becoming panicky because it was getting later and later and everyone was at the church. Finally he arrived, but I never did see his face. I married him without ever knowing if he was the man I loved. In real life, Ann, our marriage iasted only three years. Everything went wrong and we. decided to go our separate ways. During that time I had another dream over and over, about falling into a snake pit. When I managed to crawl out, the snakes chased me. Those terrifying dreams continued for several years. When they finally ended, I (hanked the Lord for releasing me from that hell. Now I have started having dreams about my grandmother and my aunt and my mother. All three have been dead for several years. These dreams are frightening because they keep telling me I must die and come be with them. I dread going to sleep at night. Do dreams have any meanings? If they do, can you tell me what these dreams mean? How can I put an end to them? I'm exhausted from lack of sleep. Please, Ann, tell me what to do. — A Nervous Wreck in Winnipeg Dear Winnipeg: Your dreams do have meaning, but I would not be so presumptuous as to try to interpret them for you. Interpreting dreams requires the skills of a trained person.
