Ogden Standard-Examiner, Wednesday, September 15, 1971 It was first named Ufali General Depot. That was In September 1911 when Col. William L. Mays was commander. This name came back to the depot at a later date. ^-In July 1942, the name of the depot was changed from Utah General Depot to Utah Quartermaster Depot as most of its functions centered around the quartermaster mission. Brigadier General Ralph Talbot Jr. was in command at that time. New missions including ordnance supply and the prisoner of war camp were activated which resulted in the name of the depot again being changed on May 23, 1943 to Utah Army Service Forces Depot. More missions, 5th Echelon 8epot Maintenance Shop; American Graves Registration Division and deactivation of prison-' er of war camp saw the name changed to Utah General Distribution Depot on April 15,1947, under the command of Col. Otho W. Humphries. In addition, they were assigned administration of Stockton General, Auburn General and Mira Loma Quartermaster sub-depots. CHANGED BACK Effective Jan. 1, Is48, Stockton, Auburn and Mira Loma were re-classified as Class II installations and this depot ^gain became Utah General De- ptft. It remained under this title . until April of 1962, when command of Gen. Omer S. Dews, the depot was transferred to Supply and Maintenance Command for operational support and with this came the new name of Utah Army Depot. Just two years later, due to reorganization of Department of Defense,. Washington, the depot was transferred to become a field activity of the Defense Supply Agency and for the first time was given a name with a city designation in accordance ^itli their system and Jan ; 1, 1904 the installation received the official title by which the depot is known today, Defense Depot Ogden.
