Fewer patients threaten nursing program By CHRIS CALDER for The Journal Supporters of the popular nursing school at College of the Redwoods' Mendocino Coast campus are worried that the program may be threatened — not by anything having to do with the program itself, but because fewer patients are staying overnight at Mendocino Coast Hospital. In a review of the nursing school earlier this spring, inspectors from the state Board of Registered Nursing indicated they are concerned that Mendocino Coast District Hospital may not provide enough training opportunities for nursing students. The state decides whether to re- certify nursing programs based in part on whether there are places nearby where students can learn hands-on. In recent years, the number of in-patients at Coast Hospital, the nursing school's main training facility and an employer of many CR graduates, has dropped. Hospital Administrator Jim Sato said the drop reflects a nationwide shift, particularly at rural hospitals, to outpatient care. Now, as state government looks to cut costs throughout California's educational sytem, the Board of Registered Nursing is nearing a decision whether to re-certify CR's nursing school. That decision is expected this fall. In the meantime, campus dean Bill Lex and hospital director of nursing Elizabeth MacGard are looking for ways to ensure that a nursing program stays on the Mendocino Coast. "It's clear to me that the need is as great as it's ever been" for well- trained nurses in the area, MacGard said Tuesday. She added that in the past year, the hospital has hired four CR nursing school graduates, and that people already on the hospi- tal's nursing staff often take college nursing courses to enhance their training. If there were no local program, MacGard said, Fort Bragg-area students would have to go to Eureka to find similar training. "It would be a terrible problem for people trying to utilize that program," MacGard said. She added that expanding training schedules to night shifts, and training at Ukiah hospitals, are possibilities she and Lex are checking out. More emphasis on outpatient care in the program is also being considered. This year's nursing class has 27 students, according to Peggy Templar, assistant administrator at the coast campus. The program has been popular since it started in the early 1980s, because it gives local people training for well-paying jobs that are available here. .10 AT THE TACK ROOM Men's 13MWZ Cowboy Cut™ Heavy Indigo Denim Made to last by Wrangler Brand Women's Pre-washed Cowboy Cut™ 13MW2MR Misses, 13MWZG Juniors, Indigo Blue $0100 98 Regular & Slim 1T thru 7 SALE $ 14°° Boys sizes 8-16, Reg. & slim SALE $ 16°° Prewashed, Made Tough!
