Primary task of the directorate is to receive, store and issue the approximately 656,000 separate items maintained in 900,000 places throughout the depot. The directorate receives shipments of these materials prepares them for storage and issue, _ and stores them under conditions appropriate for the typo of item. It all hinges on a well-trained and efficient working staff. Impact of strikes and embargoes which occur during a year is held to a minimum by advance planning for different ways of shipping. D1SADVANTAGED HELPED Employment of disadvanfaged youths in the Ogden area became a significant part of the DDO operations again this year. In May, the youths reported for work on various projects throughout the directorate. The summer hire program is designed to help young people earn and karn through government employment. These youths worked on productive of savings for the taxpayer. A mechanized system for inventory was tested at DDO and put into operation for ths Defense Personnel Support Center and the Defense General Supply Center in July of 1970. Further refinements are being made and procedures will be prepared for use later by ali PSA depots and centers. The first application of the cathode ray tube device with tiie Defense Supply Agency was applied to the inventory process at DDO during February of this year. This device provides a direct input of data to the computer system, provides for the immediate visual image of the computer record much the same as on a television picture tube. If required, the information can ba automatically printed on paper through the use of on-line printers.
