14 Ogden Standard-Examiner, Wednesday, September 15, 1971 Defense Depot Ogden has, often been referred to as "The world's biggest store." Certainly within the Department of Defense this statement is true. The quantity of items stored and shipped from this facility requires a highly complex and progressive data processing system. The Office of Data Systems is responsible for developing maintaining, and operating a data processing setup that not only meets the needs of the depot but also provides responsiveness so essential to the Deparlment of Defense supply mission. Use of data processing equipment at the depot was started shortly after the facility was activated. Initial equipmen included a relatively fe\\ punched card accounting machines. Use of these machines was almost constantly increased until 1959. At tha time, the depot installed its firs computer. This change not only reduce the cost of these services by a least 25 per cent, but als provided a much greate capability for supporting depo activities. The past 10 years have seen number of progressive change in computers used. Each chang has increased the capabilities o the depot, providing more e fective support, and ha reduced operating costs. VARIOUS USAGES Computer operations durin (he past year have involves many interesting applications One computer is used to receiv and send messages and dat throughout the world and t receive this type of informatio from, primarily, five inventor control points and 70,006 depot customers. The use of card punch machines has virtually disappeared, having been replaced by optical character reading equipment. This process involves typing information to be fed into Hie computer on regular bond paper. Typed material is "read" by a device that places this information on magnetic lape. The depot is now moving toward virtual elimination of paper by installing a direct entry system. This system, known as Cathode Ray 'Tubes (CRT), involves use of video tubes very much like television, along with a typing keyboard and, in some instances, al printer. _ Data may be entered directly into the computer from various work sites throughout the in- Congr alula tions DEFENSE DEPOT OGDEN from "OMAR KHAYYAM'S RliBAiYAT" 123 E. 3rd So.
