to Ogtkn Standard-Examiner, Wednesday, September 15, 1971 SAVING — Lois Beckstead, materials segregator and classifier, "pans" the tons of demilitarized brass buttons from which $37,000 worth of gold was salvaged during the past year. Salvage and Repair Save U.S. Taxpayers Large Sums of Money The depot maintenance division of the Installation Services Directorate \vhich is headed by Col. Charles F. Kolankiewicz, U.S. Army, has chalked up a record year in maintenance operations. Henry Genetti is division chief. The division earned from the Defense Supply Agency stock fund $1,269,485 in reimbursement during the year Sept 1, 1970,- lo Aug. 31, 1971. The earnings were for repairs, modification and fabrication of DSA stocks. During this period the division completed the repair, modification and fabrication of 314,833 items, an increase of 42,617 items over the previous year. These items are received on the depot from post, camps and stations as surplus for their needs, and are destined to be returned to the supply system. CONDITION CHECKED Upon inspection of the items, many are found to be inoperable and require repair. The Defense Supply Center is notified and issues a project order for the repair and return to stock. Items on project order include kitchen and baking equipment, mechanical components, electricaj equipment, construction equipment, beds and sewing machines. It performed careful classification of 848,490 Army bag items, an increase of 136,350 items over the previous year. Tiiese are used articles of clothing which are received from posts, "camps and stations for classification as lo their serviceability. They include the summer and winter uniform, raincoat and overcoat.
