"We don't rule it out'," he said. The senator was en route yesterday to Arizona, but his office in Washington issued a statement which quoted him as saying: "I am both proud and delighted at Barry Jr.'s victory in the 27th Congressional District of California. I have long urged young people throughout the country to take an active part in politics. "I am naturally delighted that my eldest son decided to make the run in California and I am very proud of the campaign which he conducted." The younger Goldwater said he had no way of telling whether the family name was a factor in his strong showing: "It is a two-edged sword," he said. "The name Goldwater evokes very certain emotions, very exact feelings — some favorable and some not." The son said his showing "surprised the devil out of me." The closest Republican opponent was Los Angeles Councilman James B. Potter Jr., who received 16,908 votes. The current congressional lineup from California is 21 Democrats and 16 Republicans. Barry was born in Los Angeles but moved to Arizona when quite young. He attended schools in Phoenix and continued at the Staunton Military Academy in Virgin- ia. He studied business and marketing at the University of Colorado and Arizona State University where he was graduated in 1962. During his college years he became interested in Republican politics and was active in the Young Republicans. During his father's unsuccessful campaign for president in 1964 he toured the country speaking in behalf of the candidate. BARRY GOLDWATER JR. Eisenhower, 69, unable to attend his brother's burial yesterday, remained in satisfactory condition in Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
