ON THE MARKET FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 1993-3 Window treatments require careful thought By MARTA SZOBOSZLAY, M.A., and KAREN JOHNSON-CARROLL, Ph.D. Aesthetics, insulation, style, color, light control, privacy. These are just some of the many reasons for obtaining window treatments. Where do I begin? It's important that window treatments: • suit your lifestyle and taste; • match the style of the house and furniture/accessories; • are within your budget; • windows are fully operable with the window treatment; • maintenance procedures are clearly stated. Many people are not aware of what to call the style of their home or office. A couple of quick polaroids and professional assistance can resolve this very quickly. Another step in the right direction is to take window measurements to your professional. This is truly the best utilization of time for both the consumer and the professional. Many times consumers have no concept as to how much these items will cost. One of my interior design friends was called to a customer's home to give an estimate for draperies. As it turns out, the customer had allotted $50 for the purchase, not being aware that prices had increased in 28 years. Thus, by taking your measurements around, you can get a feel for the ballpark price. I EDITOR'S NOTE: Karen Johnson-Carroll, PhD. is an assistant professor of interior design at San Francisco State University. MartaStobonlay, MA. consults for Interior Facility Consultants in Ukiah and Cotati as does Johnson-Carroll. Both nave completed commercial, residential and real estate projects in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. A A / r Double Hung Picture Casement Ranch Awning certainly wouldn't order any window treatments without them being professionally measured, however. What's new? What's new depends on which style you are talking about. In contemporary homes, the use of decorative rods is popular. Poor boy swags are often draped decoratively over poles and hard window treatments are used. In traditional homes, valences, lamber- Jalousie quins or swags are popular as well. This is in line with decorative rods being popular, as they are both headers of window treatments. Wide continental rods and lots of poofy balloons are prevalent. Tiebacks are now used to tie balloon valences in decorative ways. This also is easy for the do-it- yourself person. Attention to detail Regardless of the type of window treat- See WINDOWS, Page 5 .
