Mondcy* February U. Engineering Is 'Backbone 1 Of Nation. Kiwanis Told "Engineering is the backbone | of our past and the key to our] future," Knox T. Beavers said at the Baytown Kiwanis Club in his presentation for National Engineers Week. "Automation and It's Effect On You" was the subject of Beavers, who is a member of the Baytown Society of Professional Engineers. He said three things can go together — "engineering, automation and people." "Some people are worrysng about automation taking over jobs. But figures show less unemployment now than in the past,' Beavers pointed out- Automation is not new, he remarked. The first player piano invented in 1801 was a form of automation. Automation started in the last century when "machines started taking over muscles." Beavers cited an important time was when Eli Whitney started mak- ing interchangeable parts. Another milestone was when the assembly line came along during Henry Ford's time. "The United States to a great extent owes its prosperity to the people who have learned how to produce more and in a more economical way," Beavers said. Part of the engineers' creed, he said, is to dedicate their knowledge and skills to the betterment of human life. He said engineers should be proud of their contribution to the standards of living of today. j "It the people expect to have what they are demanding now, they must accept automation." Beavers w &s introduced by Steve Dedman. Guests were King Leach and Ronnie Anderson from the Circle K Club: David McCallum and Doani e Muennink, Key dub; Margaret Lewis, Keyettes; Bill Hyland, Northshore Kiwanis Club; Cheney Coker, Jerry Carlton and Frank Yates.
