On The Road B-7 FRI., JUNE25- SAT., JUNE 26, 1993 Nissan Maxima is unchanged pleasure By RON MOORHEAD for The Journal Nissan has presented its four- door sedan, the Maxima, as a sports car with four doors. It would be difficult for me to absolutely concur with this evaluation in the true differentiation of the words. However, the 1993 Maxima is a nice road car dressed in its GXE mode. It rides well and is comfortable for driver and passengers. It is an easy automobile to drive and quite nice for long trips. While most buyers will notice there are few additions to the 1993 Maxima, two changes have been made which follow the trend in safety and environmental concerns. A driver's side air bag has been made standard in the Maxima for 1993. This added feature is welcomed for the safety conscious. The piece of safety equipment that is retained from previous years — and with the addition of the air bag I had hoped it would be dropped — is the motorized seat belts for the front seats occupants. The main reason I don't care for these motorized mice besides the assault on my intelligence, is more than once I had to remind my passengers to buckle the manual lap belt. The idea that once the motorized portion straps you in you're ready to go is the single greatest fault with these devices. It will be nice to see these little animals become extinct. The environmental concerns are answered with the addition of a non-chlorofluorocarbon air conditioner. With the ban on CFC-12, the Freon-based refrigerant HFC-134a is now being utilized by manufacturers to answer this ozone depleting concern. As I said, little in the way of change has graced the Maxima line. Two models are available, the GXE up-level luxury version and the SE, which is the sporty model. I had the opportunity to test the richly appointed GXE during a recent visit to Seattle and was treated to a pleasant ride through the Cascade mountains. It is quite unusual to see such a drastic weather change even for the mountainous areas of Washington. 1993 Nissan Maxima GXE The Maxima and I traveled through 80-degree temperatures into bursts of rain and even a few inches of snow. The key word here is traveled. At no time during the entire trip did I feel uneasy or concerned. The front-wheel-drive Maxima handled each condition comfortably. The GXE is fitted with a different suspension setup to provide its riders a much more forgiving ride, unlike the SE which is stiffer and gives a better feel for the road and driving conditions. The GXE isolates occupants from those harsh elements of the outside world, and that is exactly what the GXE is meant to do. The leather-upholstered seats are supportive and comfortable. Both are electronically controlled, however, the driver's seat has manual controls for lumbar support and tilt on the cushion. Passengers seated in the rear bench seat have plenty of room for both their legs and heads. Shoulder room is a bit tight with three in the back, but with two passengers there is ample room even for long trips. Power for the 1993 Maxima comes from a compact V-6 engine. This single overhead cam engine delivers 160 horsepower to the front wheels. Even with this power, there is little torque steer which can be prevalent in more powerful front-wheel-drive vehicles. Not only is the engine powerful enough to give the 1993 Maxima plenty of get up and go, it is also extremely smooth and quiet. There is little noise intrusion into the passenger compartment. What noise penetrated the sounds of the compact disc player came from bad road surfaces and even then it was negligible. Sometimes radical changes are not necessary in the automotive world. But, there are examples of automobiles which need an overhaul of their platform and body styling. The 1993 Maxima is not one of those targeted as of yet. There will come a day when this sedan from Nissan will need a total revamping. For now it is current, efficient and accommodating. The Nissan Maxima is also pampering, the GXE and sporty, the SE as well as a pleasant automobile to drive. f*f< I I i I I ! ^aaaiti^aa^^ DOWN DELIVERS Upon approval of credit CALIFORNIA EDITION GMC SIERRA ITS LOADED WITH: Air Conditioning, AM/FM cassette Stereo, Tachometer, Special Appearance Package, Auto Transmission & a powerful 4.3 Liter V-6 Engine. $ 13.995 Price + tax, lie., doc., subject to prior sale, ends 6-30-93.
