A10 THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS, Wednesday, March 30, 1994 Navigating in seas of mutual funds Financial columnist Mike Grenby explains some of the promise and peril of mutual fund investments, page A 12. THE PROGRESS USINESS A Credit Union discontinuing shares First Heritage Savings Credit Union will no longer offer for sale the investment shares it used to finance its expansion. In a letter last week to members, FHS board Chairman Ben Voth announced the credit union will discontinue the sale its Class Investment Equity Shares. Members were allowed to buy up to $5,000 in the shares, which funded the credit union's growth in the Fraser The expansion saw FHS grow to include 10 credit union branches and eight insurance branches. Voth said the credit union had met the capital requirements for the expansion, and did not need to attract new investment because the new branches had made its capital base broad enough.

Members will still be able to buy up to $1,000 in Class A Membership Shares. Al Jeffrey closes after 40 years, sudden death Well-known men's wear shop at Five Corners is no more By Mark Falkenberg Staff Reporter AUeffrey, owner of the Yale Road men's wear store that bears his name, will close his store for good Thursday after 40 years. "I'm finished," says Jeffrey, whose store near Five Corners has clothed men in Chilliwack since 1954. The closure follows the death of Jeffrey's 38-year-old son Brian, who collapsed from a brain hemorrhage at the business Jan. 22 and was pronounced dead the next day in Vancouver General Hospital.

Brian, who had worked at the store since he was 16, was going to take over when his father retired. "That's why we closed up the business," says Jeffrey. "I had to sell it Before setting up shop in Chilliwack, Jeffrey, 74, had managed a wholesale clothing store in Regina. He also spent more than six years in the Royal Canadian Navy, where he was in charge of supplies and spent two years at sea. Cleaning out the store Monday morning, Jeffrey is deciding what to keep.

One of the things he'll take is a plaque with the store's motto: "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."
