CHICAGO Mary Frances Shura Craig, a prolific writer who once served as president of the Mystery Writers of America, has died from injuries suffered in an apartment fire. She was 67. Craig wrote 69 mystery, historical and children's novels and more than 250 short stories.

Among her best-known works are the children's books "The Barclay Street Six Pack," "Chester" and "Eleanor," and mystery nov-els "The Third Blond" and "Flash Point." Craig also was known for personally answering letters from children who had read her books. And she shared her talents with other writers through seminars and classes. Craig died Saturday in the burn unit of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. She was injured in a fire Dec. 13.

"Mary was a writer's writer. She not only knew what she was doing but had a great ability to pass it on to other writers," said Len Hilts, a friend and fellow author. Craig received numerous awards, including the Carl Sand- berg Literary Arts Award for Children's Literature. Survivors include three daughters, a sister and three grandchildren. Plans for a memo- rial service were incomplete.
