Koehler and some friends watched the yellow and white, single-propeller plane disappear behind some bushes. "There was no fire or explosion or anything. If it was a crash, it was a very quiet one," said Koehler.

Whittington told deputies he had been trying to simulate engine failure when he saw his altitude was too low, Burgraff said. When he tried to climb, he could not generate enough engine power. To avoid hitting houses in the hilly area, Whittington landed in the field. The plane rolled for a few yards, nosedived and then flipped over onto its roof. National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration investigators were conducting a routine probe into the crash.

Scores of people stood in line for free rides on the trains at grand opening ceremonies at stations in downtown Riverside and on Pedley Road. The train takes its inaugural 58-mile run from Riverside to Los Angeles on Monday. Metrolink officials were overjoyed by the large turnout for Saturday's events.

"It would seem there's going to be great demand," Metrolink spokesman Peter Hidalgo said. The Riverside and Pedley stations are among four that will operate along the Riverside Metrolink line. The others are in East Ontario and Industry. Commuters will be able to catch four trains into Los Angeles each day. GRAVE MARKERS A GRANITE BRONZE FRANK L.
