He was 40. Sharkey died Friday at 5 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital in Brooklyn, said Herb Nanas. He had been in Southern California up until a week ago when his family brought him back to New York, Nanas said. "Doctors said he was supposed to pass away 6 to 8 months ago. He put up the most extraordinary battle," Nanas said. The son of a professional drummer who abandoned the family when Sharkey was five, Sharkey fell for acting when he saw Jack Lemmon's depiction of an alcoholic in 1962's "Days of Wine and Roses." He drove to Los Angeles at age 20 after attending a Greenwich Village acting school. His feature film credits included "Trackdown" "Stunts," "Paradise Alley," "Who'll Stop Plane teacher makes an emergency landing in class By Ed Hayward Sun Staff Writer A flight instructor giving a student a demonstration on how to deal with an an engine failure was forced to make an emergency landing Saturday in a Yucaipa field, the sheriffs department said. George Whittington, 45, of San Bernardino and his student, Debora Williams, of Loma Linda, were not injured in the 9:45 a.m. crash landing, said San Bernardino County sheriffs Deputy Steve Burgraff. A neighbor said the plane appeared to have problems generating power and circled the neighborhood several times before it went down in a field northeast of Jefferson and Ivy avenues. Scores of people stood in line for free rides on the trains at grand opening ceremonies at stations in downtown Riverside and on Pedley Road. The train takes its inaugural 58-mile run from Riverside to Los Angeles on Monday. Metrolink officials were overjoyed by the large turnout for Saturday's events. "It would seem there's going to be great demand," Metrolink spokesman Peter Hidalgo said. The Riverside and Pedley stations are among four that will operate along the Riverside Metrolink line. The others are in East Ontario and Industry. Commuters will be able to catch four trains into Los Angeles each day. f GRAVE MARKERS A GRANITE BRONZE FRANK L. Koehler and some friends watched the yellow and white, single-propeller plane disappear behind some bushes. "There was no fire or explosion or anything. If it was a crash, it was a very quiet one," said Koehler. Whittington told deputies he had been trying to simulate engine failure when he saw his altitude was too low, Burgraff said. When he tried to climb, he could not generate enough engine power. To avoid hitting houses in the hilly area, Whittington landed in the field. The plane rolled for a few yards, nosedived and then flipped over onto its roof. National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration investigators were conducting a routine probe into the crash.
