MONDAY, MAY H, BLTTHBTItLE TTAWC.) COflRTER PAOK seven COMPACT AIR CONDITIONING — This low- oost Carrier Year-Round Home Weathermaker, introduced last year for homes in the under-$15,000 class, is now available in water-cooled or air- cooled models for any size or type of home. The Weathermaker provides cooling and dehumidify- io£, winter heating, and filter-cleaned air circu- throughout the year. Water-cooled modftlt are supplied in 2, 3, 5 and 7& tons of cooling capacity, and air-cooled models 1-7/10, and a full 2 and 3 ton*. The compact unit is so quiet it can be installed in closets or adjacent to living areas as well as to basements. The air-cooled condensing attachment can be located in the yard, garage, breetewft? or louvered attic. Variety of Carrier ModelsGive Year-Round Air Conditioning Year-round home air' condition- tog units are available this year in the widest range of low-cost models yet on the market, it is reported by Carrier Corporation, biggest manufacturer of reii-dential air conditioning equipment. "The rapid growth in demand is evidenced by the increase in sales from 5,000 unils total in 1951 to more than 50,000 units installed in 1953." according to William A. Lake, residential air conditioning sales manager for Carrier. "The result has been a broad development program producing units for every type of home from the smallest up to very large dwellings." Carrier itself is producing its Year-Round Weathermaker in both water-cooled and air-cooled models in sizes ranging from 1.7 tons up to 7.5 tons, Mr. Lake pointed out. Year-round units provide summer cooling and removal of excess humidity. winter heating, and filtered air circulation for the entire residence from a single cabinet operated by one thermostat. They are designed for installation in new homes or for replacement of warm air heating systems in existing homes using the same ductwork. Eliminate Water Problems "We've even eliminated all water consumption problems with this j year's line of models," Mr. Lake ' pointed out. "Air-cooled refrigeration is available with units providing T.7 tons, a full two tons, and a full three tons of cooling. These models will take care of the entire range of low and medium priced houses." Carrier introduced the first low- cost two-ton home unit on the mark-et in October 1952. Its develop- m-enEw as instrumental in the rapid ex-paosioa of home air conditioning last year. It was also the first of t&is Mnd providing air-cooled re- "For the first time," M-r. Lake noted, ''a house could be completely conditioned for from $500 to $1.000 more than the cost of a heating system alone. .In addition the Weather-maker Home 'could be designed around the air conditioning to incorporate savings which coulc afcsorb most or all of this extr cost a-nd to provide far better homes from the standpoint of lay out. "TSae IMiJfc of the nation's ne^ homes are in the $-15,000-or-unde Bracket and will normally range in size up to 1,200 square feet," he said. "The full capacity two-ton air-cooled Weathermaker as wel as the water-cooled model can now handle this size range easily, and can take care of even larger houses in some northern areas." The three-ton models with air cooled or water-cooled refrigera tion extend the same advantages of low-cost, compact, high efficien cy air conditioning to homes in the medium-price bracket. Three-ton sizes will handle homes up to 1,800 square feet, or larger in the North Another major market for these units will be in existing home equipped with forced warm air heating systems more than five years old or with gravity warm air heat. Bi the case of forced warm air systems, the Year-Round Weathermaker can be substituted for the obsolete furnace with virtually no change in ductwork. With gravity heat, some modification of lead-off ducts and outlets may be necessary. Ito existing homes, cost of the water-cooled two-ton Weather- maker will range about $500 to $1,000 more than the cost of replacing the heating system alone. For the three-ton Weathermaker the extra cost will run about $700 to $1,200 extra. All models can be covered under three-year home improvement loan financing currently available, or the cost can b« Incorporated in a new long-term mortgage. Air Cooling Extra With air-cooled condensing, the cost for both two or three-ton models will be about $200 to $450 more depending on size, but at the same time aH operating costs for water attic. The entire line of Year-Bounc Weathermaker has been engineered to solve virtually all problems encountered in a residence. The base units can be equipped with burners for oil or any type of gas including natural, manufactured, mixed or liquified petroleum- gas. With current home construction costs ranging from $10 to $15 a square foot, the Weathermakers are designed to occupy a minimum of space — less than would be taken up in many cases by heating plants alone. They can be installed in a tight- fitting closet with only an access door in front for servicing. . parts of the Weathermaker can be reached or removed simply by opening front panels on the unit The burner section can be taken from the unit in one piece for shop servicing or replaced immediately with another burner, eliminating the need to work on it in the hmoe. The heart of the unit—the refrigerating compressor—is a special Carrier "serviceable" hermetic which provides the long life and direct- drive efficiency of a hemetic type and the same time permits servicing in the field. Simplified control of the entire year round operation of the system is available through the Carrier panel which can be mounted on a wall in some convenient location in the living room area. A flick of a from heating to cooling. A single thermostat controls the temperature level during either summer or winter operation. To provide extreme quietness the air conditioning unit is designed with two separate passages for cooling or or heating the air, cutting down resistance to allow and permitting use of pressure fan. a silent, low- KALAMAZOO, Mich. hos- The a*r - cooled i>efrigerant condensing attachment i« a small, quite weatherproof unit which can be installed out of sight in the yard, pital in Kalamazoo is offering free medical care to propective mothers if: The child is the mother's fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth and it is born in 1954.
