York (Pa.) Daily Record, Tuesday, October 18, 1977 15 Torrez Faces Hooton On Mound Tonight Yamkees Go Home For Game No 0 6 Wednesday night. But, he is happier to be starting the sixth game since he feels he works better on only three days rest. "I'm just happy to be going out there," said Torrez. "It'll be a super feeling to know that I have a chance to win the Series. I'll do the best Mike Torrez can do.

If I get three or four runs, I'll be all right." Scoring that many runs against Hooton is a tough order, though, if his famed knuckle-curveball is working and he has his control. "I feel great and I'm speculating a win," said Hooton. "Getting the first two guys in of the Series so far. Figueroa, distraught over the latest developments, refused to talk to reporters after Sunday's game. "Figueroa isn't 100 per cent and if a pitcher isn't 100 per cent I don't want him out there," said Martin.

So, it will be the right-handed Torrez against right-hander Burt Hooton Tuesday night and the game could develop into a real pitcher's duel if both men flash the form they demonstrated In their earlier Series outings. Torrez was the winning pitcher in the third game last Friday night when he went the distance on a seven-hitter and struck out nine. Hooton won the second game when he stopped the Yankees on five hits. With the Yankees needing only one more victory to win the World Series, Torrez wasn't expecting to start again unless it came down to a decisive seventh game he said go ahead," Figueroa said when reached at his Fort Lee, N.J. apartment.

"Then I thought about it and decided it would be a bad move on my part. It wouldn't look good and even though I dont' want to play for the Yanks next year, I want to be part of the club until the Series is over." Figueroa was at Yankee Stadium Monday but denied that any Yankee officials were responsible for his change in plans. "Nobody called me because there was nothing to it," he said. "Billy had given me permission to leave and I was going until I decided it would be a wrong move." What was the reason for the change? It seems Figueroa is not completely recovered from the nerve damage on his right index finger which has kept him out NEW YORK (UPI) New York Yankee pitcher Ed Figueroa, who was all set to fly home to Puerto Rico after Manager Billy Martin decided to pitch Mike Torrez instead of him in the sixth game of the World Series, had a sudden change of heart Monday and said he'll be at Yankee Stadium for Tuesday night's contest with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Martin had announced to the news media after Sunday's 10-4 loss to the Dodgers that Figueroa would pitch the sixth game.

But the Yankees' skipper changed his mind after conferring with trainer Gene Monahan and named Torrez as his starter. Figueroa then asked Martin if he could leave the club, Martin granted permission and the pitcher made plans to return to Puerto Rico. "I asked Billy if I could go home and Only Double Pro YorfelJaily Record Cal Hubbard, 76, Dies ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (UPI) Cal Hubbard, veteran major league umpire and the only man ever elected to both the professional football and baseball Halls of Fame, died Monday night.

The 76-year-old Hubbard's son, Dr. Robert Hubbard of suburban Gulfport, reported his father died of cancer after a short illness. Hubbard, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound tackle in an era when most lines averaged 200 pounds, played 10 years for the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was elected in 1963 as a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Hubbard, who began umpiring pickup baseball games at age 18, became a professional umpire in the spring of 1928 with the Piedmont League following his first season in pro football with the Giants.

For 10 years, he played pro football and umpired baseball. Hubbard joined the American League umpire corps in 1936. He worked four World Series, in 1938, 1942, 1946 and 1949. In 1951 he was involved in a hunting accident in which a gun pellet lodged in his Bleier Sparks 20 Steelers PITTSBURGH (UPI) Rocky Bleier ran for two touchdowns and rookie Sidney Thornton ran for another Monday night to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to their sixth straight victory, 20-14, over the Cincinnati Bengals in a nationally televised game between the AFC Central Division rivals. The victory gave the Steelers a 3-2 record, moving them into a three-way tie for first place in the four-team division with Cleveland and Houston.

Cincinnati, which has never won in Three Rivers Stadium in eight tries, fell to 2-3. Bleier scored on plunges of one and two yards following Cincinnati turnovers. Thornton also scored on a 1-yard plunge, one play after Terry Bradshaw, playing with a half-cast on his broken left wrist, completed a 40-yard pass to Bennie Cunningham to put the Steelers on the Cincinnati one. Roy Gerela kicked two extra points but missed another and was short and wide left on a 43-yard field goal attempt. The Bengals scored their first touchdown just before halftime on a 4-yard run by offensive lineman Glenn Bujnoch after "I heard the other day they are going to have 47-man squads," he continued with a chuckle.

"In my day we had 15 or 18 on a team and everybody played about 60 minutes." Hubbard always gave the same answer when asked how he handled the "tough guys" he encountered as an American League umpire. "A good umpire really has to understand only two things," Hubbard said. "How to maintain discipline and how to read the rulebook." "I always hated to throw a guy out of a game," Hubbard "But sometimes it is necessary to maintain discipline, and when it was their time to go they went. An umpire owes it to the fans and players to understand every nuance of every rule. Hubbard also always paid tribute to former AL President Will Harridge for protecting AL umpires during a period when tough guy managers like Leo Durocher, Charlie Dressen, Frank Frisch and Casey Stengel were running roughshod over National League umpires.

"They didn't come any better than Will Harridge," said Hubbard. "There were a couple of managers with whom I didn't hit it off very well on the field. But it was always pleasant to exchange Christmas cards with them." Besides his son, Hubbard is survived by his wife, Mildred. Golf Title Match Hall OfFamer right eye. That ended his career on the diamond.

The American League kept him on as an assistant superviser of umpires and in 1954 he was named umpire superviser for the league. He retired to Milan, in 1969 and, on doctor's orders, moved to Treasure Island, near St. Petersburg, in January, 1976. That year he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, only the fifth umpire chosen for that honor. Hubbard was born at Keytesville, Mo.

He lettered in four sports in high school and then attended Centennary College at Shreveport, and Geneva College, playing football at both schools. He also was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. "When I tune in football games these days I don't understand the lingo," said Hubbard in accepting his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. After the Bengals' second touchdown, they recovered an onsides kick.and drove deep into Steelers' territory. Isaac Curtis dropped a pass in the end zone with 11 seconds remaining and then caught another pass and carried it to the eight but time ran out.

Both teams were hampered by injuries to key offensive players, causing a sloppily played game. Altogether the Steelers lost three fumbles plus the blocked punt, while the Bengals turned the ball over five times via a fumble and interceptions of one Anderson pass and three Reaves passes. There were also numerous penalties called on both teams. The interception of Anderson's pass by Jack Ham led to the Steelers' first TD early in the second quarter. Dan Senft led the West York attack with a 63 and a 4 to 0 victory over Dave Fair, who shot 64, but Spring Grove's John Blecher carded a 62 for medalist honors and won by 3 to 1 over Preston Shof 70. Brad Shaffer also was victorious for Spring Grove by 4 to 0 with a 65 over Brooks Bubb, 71, while Scott Miller, 66, topped Tim Meckley, 70, 3' to Vi and Daryl Eber-ly, 68, just got by Chris Roberts, 67, 2'i to and change. One loss and the Dodgers are dead, but after routing the Yankees Sunday the club was chock full of optimism. "There's nothing left to do now for us but win," said Dusty Baker. "We may have passed through our slump. We Just want to win Tuesday and get to Wednesday's game.

Then it will be us against them, one on one. Nothing that happened previously will have mattered." Bengals offense took over at the Cincinnati 29 and scored on Bleier's 1-yard plunge seven plays later. Later in the second period the Bengals got off a high snap on a 50-yard field goal attempt by Chris Bahr and Bahr and Steeler cornerback Mel Blount chased the loose ball 49 yards before Blount got control of it on the Bengals' 18 and returned it to the three. Bleier went over from the 2-yard line two plays later. Thornton's TD run in the fourth quarter capped a 59yard, 9-play drive.

Tough defensive play resulted in several injuries besides the ones each team started with. The Bengals lost not only Anderson but tight end Bob Trumpy, who left the game with a head injury after a hard hit by Blount. Steelers' running back Franco Harris missed much of the first half with a hip-pointer but returned in the second. Anderson injured his left knee on a tackle by defensive tackle Steve Furness but the extent of the injury was not known. Susquehannock Wins Homecoming arriors Stop Rams, 26 match winning streak but will not affect final standings since the Rockets cannot be ousted from the top spot.

Spring Grove is defending league champion and will meet Susquehannock, undefeated East champ, in an 18-hole match at 1 p.m. over Honey Run course, Thursday for top honors. To 18 Highlights were a Bach to Bill Butler pass for 35 yards, another to Don Marsteller for 12 and a touchdown run himself of ten yards. Again the bonus effort failed. Susquehannock put the out-of-bounds kick in play on its own 40 and Schuler broke Kennard-Dale's back with a sudden thrust which left him in the clear to continue the 60 yards for a touchdown.

Jones' kick made it 26-12. The Rams fought back and got a touchdown with a ten-yard pass from Bach to Butler who made an exceptional catch. Key play in the 59-yard drive was a pass from Bach to Marvin Hobbs for21 yards. Susquehannock, now 2-4-1, is at South Western Friday while Kennard-Dale, 1-6, hosts York Suburban Saturday afternoon. West York surprised Spring Grove's West division champions during chilly YCIAA Golf league action yesterday, topping the Rockets by 11-9 during a three-match program.

South Western and Hanover postponed their contest until Thursday. The setback ended Spring Grove's 11- minutes later but lost a battle with the clock as the half expired just as they reached the Warrior five-yard line. Susquehannock's third-period score came with a net drive of 50 yards but most the ball lugging was done by the officials. Before the Warriors could move from that midfield stripe they were awarded two successive 15-yard penalties, placing the ball on the 20. Schuler ran to the 14 but Susquehannock was penalized 15 yards back to the 29.

Immediately came a pass interference call against the Rams and Susquehannock was back at the 14 from where Gillooly scored with 38 seconds left. Mike Jones kicked and it was 20-6. Early in the fourth frame Kennard-Dale again struck with a 62-yard drive. Susquehannock and Kennard-Dale completed last week's YCIAA football program last evening at Glen Rock when the Warriors earned a 26-18 decision in a hot cold-weather battle. Originally listed Friday the contest was set back because of rain.

A large Homecoming Night crowd watched the exciting contest marred only by 100 yards of penalties. Susquehannock drew first blood with 7:22 left in the first quarter, climaxing a drive which carried 64 yards. Tim Gillooly and Todd Schuler bit off hunks of yardage, with the former having one dash of 19 and Schuler picking up 28 on one effort. They lugged the ball to the nine from where Mike Crujillo carried to the three. Mark Krom completed the drive with a touchdown from that spot.

A conversion kick was wide. With 9: 10 remaining in the second period Susquehannock struck once more after marching 77 yards. Again the running of Gillooly sparkled. His longest effort was 25 yards and he scored from the seven but a pass for two bonus points was grounded. Jerome Bach, mixing his plays well, guided Kennard-Dale 62 yards for a score.

Bach passed to Jud Gemmill for several short gainers and sent Tim Bradleytfor productive runs until reaching the 10. Bach gained five himself and Jeff Spencer hit to the three before finally scoring. The extra point effort was blocked. The Rams were on the march again Pro Cage Loop Opens 32nd Season Tonight Old Faces In New Places In NBA quickly in the playoffs. Brian Taylor is a quality addition to the backcourt, but David Thompson, Bobby Jones and Dan Issel need added depth to carry Denver farther along.

Marvin Barnes puts in time with the Detroit Pistons this year instead of a jail cell, and he will combine with perennial All-Star center Bob Lanier to form a powerful rebounding combination. Portland and Los Angeles may wage a fierce war for first place in the Pacif ice Division. The defending champion Trail Blazers return with a beautifully balanced offense with scoring spread among starters Bill Walton, Maurice Lucas, Bob Gross, Lionel Hollins and Johnny Davis. Walton is the key with his passing from the post and his extraordinary defense which allows his teammates to gamble. The Lakers are so loaded that they cut former All-Star Caz-zie Russell.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar returns to dominate NBA centers and the five-time MVP will be complemented by new additions in guards DiGregorio and Hudson and forward Jamaal Wilkes. Seattle will have a new coach. Bob Hopkins, who replaces his cousin Bill Russell. In Tuesday's openers, Kansas City plays at the New York Knicks, Chicago is at Cleveland, New Jersey at Detroit, Los Angeles at Milwaukee and Golden State at Phoenix. Scott form a potent backcourt pair and Dave Bing's savvy may help.

The New York Knicks remain a question mark as they sort among a plethora of big men Bob McAdoo, Lonnie Shelton, Spencer Haywood, Tom McMillen for the right combination under new coach Willis Reed. The Houston Rockets and Washington Bullets figure to battle for the top spot in the Central Division once again. Center Moses Malone may be ready to fully blossom as an All-Star, after displaying flashes of brilliance last season, and Houston's triad of guards Mike Newlin, Calvin Murphy and John Lucas are among the league's finest. Was-ington will team the newly acquired Dandridge with Elvin Hayes in what may become a devastating forward combination. Young center Mitch Kupchak came on strong last season and may supplant Wes Unseld before long.

Frazier should fit in with Cleveland's pattern offense, but the Cavaliers lack firepower and San Antonio lacks defense. In the Midwest, the Chicago Bulls roared down the stretch last year and lost a tough three-game playoff to Portland. Forward Scott May is healthy and he combines with Mickey Johnson, Norm Van Lier and Artis Gil more in a strong starting lineup. The Denver Nuggets won 49 games last season, but faded By IRA KAUFMAN UPI Sports Writer On the eve of the new National Basketball Association season, you really "can't tell the teams without a storecard." When the NBA's 32nd season begins Tuesday night, some of the top-rated guards and forwards in the game will be appearing in new uniforms as a result of a flurry of trades and the movement of free agents. Walt Frazier and Nate Archibald, two of the NBA's finest guards of the 70's were shipped to Cleveland and Buffalo, respectively, from the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets.

Frazier, who set the tempo for the Knick championship teams of 1970 and 1973, went to the Cavaliers as compensation for signing freeagent guard Jim Cleamons. Archibald, the quick penetrating guard who led the league in both scoring and assists in 1972-73, injured an achilles tendon in the re-season and may miss the entire season. The Indiana Pacers swapped guard-forward Billy Knight the NBA's second-leading scorer last year to Buffalo In exchange for Rookie of the Year forward Adrian Dantley and sent the league's assist and steal leader. Don Buse, to the Phoenix Suns for guard Rickey Sobers. Guard Brian Taylor went from Kansas City to Denver, Buffalo's Ernie DiGregorio and Atlanta's Lou Hudson were sent to the Los Angeles Lakers who probably will lead the league in roster changes despite compiling the best record in the NBA last season.

Three quality forwards became free agents over the summer and have signed with new teams: Jamaal Wilkes left Golden State to play for Los Angeles; Leonard (Truck) Robinson went from Atlanta to New Orleans and Bob Dan-dridge left Milwaukee to sign with Washington. All this movement may not alter the balance of power in the league, however, as most of last season's playoff teams figure to qualify again in 1977-78. In the Atlantic Division, talent-laden Philadelphia looms as the team to beat if they don't beat themselves first with dissension. Last season, the 76ers lost to Portland in the playoff finals after a regular season spiced with flare-ups and discontent. All the discord in the world, however, cannot undermine the wondrous talents of forwards Julius "Dr.

Erving and George McGinnis and guard Doug Collins. The Boston Celtics may reestablish themselves as a playoff threat if center Dave Cowens can recapture the endless enthusiasm which characterized his frenzied play. Rookie forward Cedric Maxwell will have to learn the NBA ropes quickly as Boston's frontcourt is thin. Jo Jo White and Charlie.
