negro residing at 121 Western avenue walked Into the Central police station last night and said that he wished to give himself up for stabbing Edward Jones colored on the bock of the head and in the throat Marity stated that he was foreman of canetakers In a Hennepin avenue bowling alley and that Jones was employed by him as a cleaner At 11 o'clock last night he told Jones to hurry up with his work when the latter jumped at him with a drawn knife Marity according to his statements then drew a knife and made two cuts at Jones the first of which struck him at the base of the skull on the back of the neck and the second his throat The police locked Marity up and at once sent to the home of the injured man 1416 Washington avenue in order to get his version of the affair statement put an entirely different light on the matter Accord-In to the wounded man and James Harding a spectator of the affair Jones was -working as usual and stopped to get a handkerchief Marity called him a foul name and told him to get to work at once or quit Jones said that he would go on with the work os soon as he could get a handkerchief out of bis coat Marity replied by shouting: "Get out of here or I'll kill replied Jones and -started for the door He had no sooner done so than Marity jumped on him from behind according to Harding and after stabbing nlm in the bock of the head cut his throat just under the chin Jones dropped to the ground and taking his handkerchief attempted to stanch the flow of blood Marity then made another ruth at him with the open knife when Harding interfered As soon as Holding let go be started towards the prostrate man and Harding shouted at him to stop or he would shoot him Marity ran to the station whero he gave himself up Dr Brown was summoned and after waived examination and baa so far been unable to furnish bonds required LONG PRAIRIE DEFEATS ANOKA Long Prairie Minn March 20 (Times The long Prairie high school debating team met and defeated the Anoka high school team last night at this place Long Prairie had the affirmative and Anoka the negative of the state high school debating league question namely "Resolved That American cities and villages should own and operate their- public utilities Damben Place' Positions Likely to Be in Great De- mand Wires are already being laid by employes of the Camden Place station for positions in the new northeast pumping station -Employes at the lower pumping stations are also very much ntcrcsted in this matter and are wondering where they will get off at when the stations are permanently closed and the crews discharged It is recognized by citizens who wish ib see only first class workemen employed at the new station that much will depend upon the man that the Holly people sends here to have su-previslon of the new pumps for a year In case he Is a man thoroughly Independent of local politics and with no desire of remaining here he will probably be outspoken in regard to the class of men who are working about the machinery Ill order to protect their own interests the Holly company will send a man here upon the starting of the new machinery and it is the- understanding with the waterworks committee that he shall remain here an entire year The new engines and pumps will be about the finest of their kind In the country and these are now being turned preliminary to the official test That the new station should be in charge of men who are thoroughly conversant with nuachlnery is generally conceded That this principle has not obtained in the past there is plenty of political pulis of the ward variety have secured positions and it is believed that this the primary cause of many breaks at the Camden Place station "What the new station will nead Is men Who have not outlived their usefulness somewhere said a- man who is close to the waterworks department yesterday understand that there are men seeking these positions who are no longer worth anything to local concerns and they wish to get Important jobs through alder-manic Influence This city ought to try and procure men that other people want and not such as they do not want It Is safe to say that few of the men In the employ of the department could secure as good paying positions at other engines in this city" TO ENDJB01IBLES Sick and Despondent Woman Makes Unsuccessful Effort to Die Deserted by the man who had being asked the cause pointed to an empty four-ounce bottle labeled laudanum and said: "It will soon be over I took the poison I am sick of life" At first the landlady thought that she was playing a resolutions Intoning the congressman and was about to submit them when he was advised that the action of the convention might not be in accord with his wishes Rather than to have his patron humiliated by having the resolutions turned down the postmaster decided not to present them The congressman seems to be grow- ng out of favor with some of bis constituents and the action of the Rock county held last week Indorse him In a number of instances he was successful The farming community of the seventh district is opposed to reciprocity when It applies -to agricultural products and It is expected the convention will declare Itself on this point There are a number of candidates for the places on the delegation Among them are Thorpe of Willmar Seward of Marshall A Stoddard of Fairfax A Young of Tracy Jones of Morris and A Peterson of Dawson Ortonvllle is a most inconvenient place for the convention to assemble for the delegates from some of the counties will have to travel through are of the opinion that he desires to have little to do with the gubernatorial fight POLITICAL N0TE8 The St Peter Herald says: "It is a close proposition between Stem John on and 81 Leavitt as to who about Dunn being a corporation man is wholly unfounded It shows that opposition is hard pressed when they resort to distorting utterances made by Mr Dunn in order to show him up in a bad light says the Winnebago City Enterprise The Norwood Times geeks information regarding the basis for the Innuendoes concerning Hearst that are being circulated In some sections In a recent Issue It says would be quite a relief to the democrats who are supporting the EXearst movement for the presidency If the papers that are hinting at his inefficiency would come right out and tell wherein he Is not as good as the majority of men who ever sought or were mentioned for that office This glib talk and hinting about morality eta Isn't worth much in the way of preconvention talk "The probabilities are that the record of any of the men mentioned is none too good when put in the balance to offset tbe Hearst boom Is it a crime for a man to own newspapers or to have a few millions of money to pay his campaign expenses? Or is it better to do as other candidates do promise the spoils of government to the trusts In advance and have them buy the papers and pay the expenses for BOY BUBGLAB SET FBEE AT BEQUEST OF FATHER Huebscher who is in custody charged with the burglary of- the Hudson Jewelry store during the early hours of February 28 has made a complete confession of the crime Huebscher says that he committed the burglary absolutely alone and unassisted and maintains that the suspicion that he had any accomplice Is absolutely without cause According to his own statement he had repeatedly passed the stpre early In the morning for several days preceding that of the robbery but found no favorable opportunity to break Into the window until the day the robbery whs committed At the time Huebscher was robbing the shop window the officer on the beat had his hands full attending to a disorderly crowd of woodsmer who were creating a disturbance on Sixth street and profiting by the absence Huebscher rapidly cut a hole In the window and secured about 11000 worth of Jewelry Huebs cher's appearance so nearly coincides with the description given by the man who held up the home of Louis Hull 882 Oak Grove last November and succeeded In getting away with cash and jewelry to the value of 88000 that the police are strongly confidant that he must be the man I WEAPON IS SILENCE Paul Gilmore 8ays Actors Have Frequent Doubts at to Reception for This Reason The difficulty In determining the condition of an mind from the manner in which a play is received moves Paul Gilmore playing In "The Mummy and the Humming at the Metropolitan opera-house to remark that the American theater goer is almost the only one of his class whose exhibition of displeasure at performance Is evidenced entirely by his silence The remark la suggested by Mr experience in Duluth last week "The American audience except in extreme cases has but one weapon of offense In the case of an unsatisfactory performance and that is hard stony says Mr Gilmore "In other countries the people out In front generally evince their displeasure by criticism which often takes the form of a riotous demonstration hut a performance has to be pretty had In this country to call forth from the audience anything more than silence This la the rule almost all the country over Instance In Duluth the other night our first act which usually brings forth all sort of enthusiasm from the audience and which generally ends of a roar of laughter closed in almost dead silence We had but one Interpretation for this behavior on the part of the house and redoubled our efforts In the second act result When we were almost In despair a critic came behind and told us that the play was making the finest kind of an Impression on Duluth people and was one of the most delightful of the season That cheered us up some but It was not until the dose of the third act' when I was -honored with several curtain calls and finally compelled to make my little speech that learned that we had won our way "It simply demonstrates the Inability of: the actor to determine the yeal attitude of an undemonstrative au dlence Silence when a comedy is In progress betokens a hostility which in other countries would be evidenced by something much more understandable The American audiences are generally wonderfully polite hut they might save us actors a good deal of heart burning and considerable nervousness if they would let us know that' they like a play Instead of keeping us In horrible doubt for three acts- It' la an unin tentlonal Oversight which Is as characteristic as It Is unappreciated by the people at DEMOCRATS CALL MEETING Sioux Falls 8 March (Times At a mass meeting of local democrats a committee was appointed to confer with the
