8 fbunbag ritopatrii. APRIL 8, 1951 4 PRESTON AND BLACKPOOL RECORDS GO: MANCHESTER UNITED CHECKED Spurs 'Special' Is Winner I Liverpool Win Again At High bury I Hawaii soared Huddersfield's winning goal against Blackpool. 41'14' SPURS WERE MASTERS Utd. Sours 1 EWCASTLE UNITED again I disappointed a 50.000 crowd with a poor effort against Spurs. the League leaders.

They have now gone seven games since their semi-final triumph without victory. and on the form shown yesterday they can have only an outside chance against Blackpool on Cup Final day. Beaten and always outpaced. they tried the Milburn-Robledo switch which director Stan Seymour was saving for the big day, but this failed U) shake the Spurs defence. and the Londoners cruised home to an easy win.

Spurs succeeded with their brilliant inside right. Les Bennett, a left-wing passenger for three-guakters of the game. The goal came Id the seventh minute. when left-back Willis flashell a 40-yard free kick into the goalmouth for rightwinger Walters to hit past Fairbrother. Por a while in the first half Taylor was the man of the game an three times he put Robledo and Milburn through, but no goals came.

Unable to beat Clarke on the turn. Milburn took over at inside forward in the second half and did many great things. One of his shots, after an amazing run, seemed to be fisted down by Willis. But referee Bill Evans was up with the play and decided against a penalty Just before half-time Murphy. who was Spurs best forward after moving to inside right in place of Bennett.

ran on to a pass from Belly and beat Pairbrother with a drive, but he had handled as he went through and the goal was disallowed. Ramsey mad. the task of holding Mitchell look easy. and Willis was Just as comfortable in playing Walker out of the game. Dogged Fulham Defence Sheffield W.

2 Fulham 2 She Meld Wednesday fought desperately hard for victory that might have saved them from relegation, but were foiled by a defence like the Rock of Gibraltar. It needed a Fulham shock goal. after 2I minutes. to bring Wednesday out of their shell. A snap raid through a scramble in the goalmouth and Thomas scored.

Wednesday were inspired, then, and soon scored twice in three minutes, through Froggatt and Sewell. They might easily have forged further ahead but for sound work by Black In the Fulham goal. As it was. soon after the change of ends Bowie the best footballer on the field. equalised.

Wednesday's Tom Thumb wingers, Jackie Marriott and Walter Rickett, were in brilliant form, putting acmes many inviting centres which sholuld have been turned to better account. worked hard. Their defenders, under pressure. showed dogged determination. The veteran Bacuszt was in his element in this tough fight.

and was the game's outstanding back Ten Men Just Managed It Miliwall I Aldershot ....0 Millwali had to play half the game without right-back Jardine. He twisted a knee, and although he returned for a few minutes after the Interval went off again Mlllwall were already one up. for Johnson scored from close range, assisted by Neary and Constantine. Hencher was Instrumental in breaking up many Aldershot attacks and still found Mile to support the Millwall forwards. Bowler impressed.

and gave Raine little scope The Aldershot centre forward did. however give him the slip near the end and shot just A little wide past the advancing Hinton. The slippery surface did not help, but both teams overcame the difficulty surprisingly well, especially the visiting forwards, who found their son with Accuracy. Alder- was--iiiiticularly dangerous. With Jardine off and Neary replacing him, the attack suffered.

Nevertheless, Constantine had several chances to score. Scannell Taken To Hospital Southend 0 Herwrish Southend goalkeeper Scannell was on his way to hospital when Norwich leader. Summers, got his first goal 25 minutes after the interval, beating deputy 'keeper left-half Lawler after a free kick taken by Pickwick. This was one of Norwich's four real shots up to that time. Southend, with 90 per cent.

of play Just failed to finish, and it will be a long time before Nethercot forgets the plastering he had from all the Southend forwards, particularly Sibley and Tippett. Scannyll was knocked out after 28 minutes. He had dived for the ball when Gavin was about to shoot. Last night Scannell was reported to be still dazed, but there was no fracture. He has a three-inch cut on the right side of his head.

Norwich right-half Pickwick once worked his way out to the wing and Lawler tipped over a grand sOyd. shot. Titbit of the game was when Lawler, having saved an easy breakaway shot, ran down with the ball to well over the half-way line. Summers' second goal came two minutes from the end. By PAT REEKIE (Sports Editor) TWC) proud records went yesterday.

Preston North End, unbeaten in 20 consecutive League games, lost at home to West Ham. Peculiarly enough, it was West Ham who last beat them in the League. That was at Upton Park on November 18. Blackpool, beaten 2-1 by struggling Huddersfield, had their run of 18 games without defeat brought to an end, and the man who scored the winning goal against them was Harold Hassan, England's new surprise inside left. Brown, the Blackpool inside left, chosen at left half for Scotland next Saturday, retired Injured ten minutes from the end.

A typical Spurs goal beat Newcastle at home and strengthened the league leaders' hold on the championship. It was the same old technique which has brought many a Spurs winner this season. Forwards line up well back from the opponent's goaL Full-back (Willis in this case) takes the kick and drops it perfectly into the open space obliquely to the far side of the goal. Up comes the perfectly drilled forward and slams the ball Into the net. This time it was right winger Walters.

Meanwhile runners-up Manshester United were losing 2-0 at Stoke. Both goals were scored in the brat half somewhat against the run of play. Left-winger Oscroft nipped In to score the brat after Allen had saved brilliantly from centre forward MuHard but failed to gather the ball. Then two minutes from half-time scored the second, running through on his own. Point For Chelsea At the other end of the table Aston Villa's one point against gas helps them along and makes Chelsea :8 position more desperate.

Sheffield Wednesday will be kicking themselves for not defeating Fulham. After being a goal down, inside-left Proggatt equalised an earlier Thomas goal and then Wednesday's new £34,000 inside right Jackie Sewell put them ahead Little Bowie equalised early in the second half. The goal that boat Preston was scored in the first minute when centre forward Robinson beat Marston. the opposing centre half. and spreadeagled the Preston defence for Barrett to slip through and lob the ball over the head of the advancing goalkeeper.

For the teat of the match West Ham were defending stoutly hanging on to that one-goal lead. Preston threw away chance after chance in their anxiety. and Cunningham shot wide from a penalty given for a foul on Pinney. Grimsby For Div III? Manchester City scraped home winners over Blackburn Rovers through a goal scored by Hart after Eckeraley had sliced his clearance Later City lost their outside right. Meadows, with an injured ear.

When he came back during the second hall the ear was heavily plastered. I Now in third place in the Second Division are Birmingham City, who oust Cardiff through a slightly better goal average. All three of Birmingham's goals against Sheffield United came in the first half. Grimsby's home defeat by Luton puts them really on the hot seat in this division, and Chesterfield. beaten at home by Doncaster.

look like accompanying them in the Third Division next season. Nottingham Forest. ably led by Ardron, who scored a hrst-half hattrick and brought his goals total up to all-time record for his Gillingham to the tune of 4-1. Meanwhile. runnersup Norwich City won away at Southend In a match marred by a serious accident to the home goalkeener, Scannell, who received severe head injuries when he went down to save at the feet of Gayln.

HOLTON SET AN EXAMPLE Arsenal ..1 Liverpool 2 IVERPOOL were more at home AA in the Highbury mud, and playing some good first-time football deserved to win, as they have done consistently on th.s ground since the war They also had Liddell at the top of his form, and the outside left made the perfect opening for StUbbinS to score after 12 minuted. Holton was one of the Arsenal men who could match most of the opponents for strength and perslstence. Shortly before the interval he went up to a ball from Marden. and even the acrobatic Ashcroft did not have a chance of saving the header. The winning goal.

scored 11 minutes after the Interval, was a lucky one. The ball curled off Payne's foot into the net when he intended to centre. Wing-halves Mercer and Bowen struggled desperately in the last half-hour to keep the forwards moving, but the Arsenal forwards were not as direct as those of Liverpool. and an equaliser would not come. though Marden had one disallowed after the referee had consulted a linesman.

These youngsters of Arsenal are coming on apace. but Logie was out of touch, as most ball players would have been. Stubbina made a successful comeback at centre forward for Liverpool, and among other good things by Done was a terrific shot against a post. Lucky Point For Palace Ipswich T. 1 C.

Palace 1 Palace, fighting hard for the points they need so urgently, were a little lucky to take one from Ipswich. The first half was scrappy. with brief hectic spells in the opening and closing stages Palace showed glimpses of brilliant approach work. only to fail dismally in the goal area. Broughton, on the Palace right wing, repeatedly made ground and centred, but his leader.

Thomas, was efficiently held by Rees. Palace took the lead after 25 when Thomas received a pass from Hanlon and drove it into the top of the net with a first-time shot. Ipswich were on terms within seven minutes. Warne broke through and passed to Wookey, whose centre Driver nodded past Hughes. In the second half movements were frequently spoiled by offside, and the referee had to act firmly as "Incidents" threatened to develop.

Warne went close to giving Ipswich the lead when his header from Tyler's free kick bounced on the bar with Hughes beaten, but the Palace goalkeeper subsequently made brilliant saves from Drive and Wookey. CHELSEA LACKED SPIRIT Oy TONY HORSTEAD i Aston Villa ....1 THIS is more an obituary notice than a obituary on Chelsea's stay in the First Division. Rattles occasionally swung by the rain-soaked dispirited crowd sounded more like death-rattles. For the whole of the first half the rain teamed down. a suitable background to Chelsea's dull and disspirited display on the swamp passing as a Soccer pitch.

That Chelsea snatched a point was due to the untiring efforts of Reg Williams at centre forward who gained his reward for unstinting effort with a fine goal three minutes from the end. He alone of the Chelsea side showed any real spirit. Villa always looked more dangerous and constructive. In Parkes and Dave Walsh they had the best players on the full-back who was always cool and constructive and a centre forward who dash with clever distribution. It is hard to criticise severely a team in the doldrums, but Chelsea Played like a side without interest.

entbushuon, or ambition. With few exceptions they appeared to give up too easily. Chelsea had their chances. In the 20th minute Bentley made a Magnificent solo dash from the half-way line, right through the Villa defence. He had only to tap the ball past the advancing Rutherford.

He tapped In the second half the whole Chelsea forward line were kicking furiously In a melee on the Villa goal-line following a Bentley centre which Rutherford dived over Into the mud but somehow the ball came clear Villa went ahead In the 76th minute when GoMn crossed over to a earner from the right. A centre wee beaded over pet head by and jumped to head it out from under the bar. The ball went to Berbert Smith who leapt high to head It into the open net. Three minutes from time Gray, who played outside right for Chelsea throughout the second half, for once crowed the ball first time, and Williams dashect through to meet the centre with his head and put the ball into the net. A great goal.

But Chelsea need many more of theme to stay in the First Division. It's Proud West Hem Now Preston West Nam West Ham's win at Preston had double merit, for not only did they end Preston's run of 20 Leagu games without defeat, but they also became the first to record the double against the League leaders this Deacon. They were the last to beat Preston before the record-run balm They deserve credit for some great defensive work, the hero of which was deputy goalkeeper George Taylor. Nothing was too much for him. whether It was a dash upfleld to beat a forward to the ball, or turning a great shot from Morrison over the bar.

Having gained the all-Important goal in the first minutes. when Barrett accepted a pass from his partner Hooper and scored almost before the Preston defenders had rolled up their sleeves. West Ham were so determined not to reiinnuish the lead that at times they had seven or eight men In front of goal. They also had three or four men always on hand to deal with Tom Pinney. In spite of the attention paid to him, the England winger would have been Preston's match winner once more had his inside colleagues made use of his passes.

Twice he was knocked down In the penalty area, and on the second occasion a spot kick resulted. Instead of taking the kick himself. however, he entrusted the task to Cunningham. who crashed the ball high and wide of the bar. Finney tried right to the final whistle and got the ball into the net with only a minute to ffo.

but the referee ruled him offside. QPR Had Cause To Celebrate Othaen's Park 3 Mull City ....1 It was a day of celebration at Loftus-road yesterday. After the game three Rangers Farrow, and handed £750 benefit cheques each at a ceremony in the board room Earlier Hull City's expensive team had been beaten 3-1 by a Rangers side which showed greater initiative throughout. On a pitch which was waterlogged at the start and churned up into morass afterwards. Rangers staged a remarkable scoring blitz which brought them three goals In five minutes.

Two minutes before halftime Farrow headed in from a corner-kick after Robinson had fisted a fine drive from Conway Smith Just over the bar. The same player scored again when the second half was only a few seconds old. The Hull rout was complete when, almost before the cheering for this second goal had died away, the ball was in the net again. This time Conway Smith was the scorer fol. knifing a defensive slip.

Hull set to work to repair the damage done, but by this time Rangers had the bit firmly In their teeth and they did not intend to Woe. it. It was only when the Londoners eased up In the Anal minutes that Hull scored a consolation goal Ackerman sent over a high, dropping centre which tell into the net behirid goalkeeper Milan. Albion's three clear goals winthe other two were scored in a space of three minutes midway through the second half by McCall and Ryan only their second borne victory this year. Eight Minutes Switched Lead Wooster City i Brantford ....2 Brentford were the better team and would have been unlucky to lose. It was a near thing, for it was only eight minutes from time that they equalised. Four minutes later came the winning goal, which, however, should have been scored long before.

If Brentford had been as good in taking chances as in making openings their victory would have been certain before half-time. There was, however, a tendency to make absolutely certain before shooting, and this gave Leicester the chance to spoil movements before they came to fruition. Leicester were lucky to cross over with the lead from a penalty taken by Halton for a foul on rather harsh decision. Goodwin. who had been a dangerous forward throughout, equalised, and Dare, a hard worker, put on the winner.

Afternoon Out For 'Baby' Layton 0. i Bristol Revers 0 The baby" of the team, 17-yearold right-winger Brian Jackson, inspired Orient td play the football which ruined Hovers' promotion chances. A Jackson pass enabled Walton to open the score after 16 minutes, and if the Orient forward line had contained more punch in front of goal they might have increased their lead. They failed to gain anything from at least nine corners, but this was mainly due to the grand defensive play of Rovers' centre-half Warren and his hard-working goalkeeper, Bert Hoyle The visitors giant right-back Bamford, who proved too big a proposition for tiny Mcdeachey. kicked off the line when Hoyle was out of Position after saving from Rees.
