P' AUGUST 23. 1936 VILLA 11AVE TALENT TO SUCCEED NEED FOR TEAM UNITY AND BETTER LUCK ASTON VILLA'S prospects of regaining their place in the First Division in one season depends in the first place on a restoration of team unity, and in the second on a reversal of the bad luck which haunted Villa Park last season. No one will deny that the relegated team was without method, neither will anyone deny that it had more than its share of bad luck. As regards the first trouble there seems to, be a determination on the part of the players to make a fresh start As for the second, that will have to be left in the care og Dame Fortune. While several old players have been transferred, only one new player has been signed.

He is W. J. Carey. a young goalkeeper from Sedgeley Park. near Manchester, who had several trials last season with the reserves, and of whom much is expected.

When one remembers the number of reigning internationals on the Villa's books, it is impossible to believe that the club lacks sufficient talent to gain promotion. Given team combination, success will follow. fiETA.NED PLAYERS Haigltt Walsall Puss? and Position ft. IN. St.

Newcastle United Prospects Of Promotion Not Much Improved uNLESS more players are signed before the season starts Newcastle United's! prospects of regaining First League status I have not been greatly improved by the I summer recruiting. There are several men they would like, but their clubs cannot be persuaded to let them go.

Four new men have been signed, and two of them may be found in the team at the start of the season. One is Rogers. the former Arsenal outside right, and the other Carver, a centre half from Blackburn Rovers. Outside right was a position which gave Newcastle a lot of trouble last season, and much is expected of Rogers. N.

Coyde. another of the new men, is also an outside right, who was given a free transfer by Sunderland, and D. Smyth is a young Scottish centre forward who spent last season with Aston Villa. RITAINEO PLAYERS Height Weight Myth, and earthilwall Position tt. in.

The old board of directors practically disa ppe a ine directors resigning. The first moves of the new directorate in securing Jimmy Dunne from the Arsenal. Boyd from Luton Town, and two young Welshmen, Moore and Smallwood, have brought renewed enthusiasm to the district and there Is a general opinion that the Saints will show an improvement.

The fact that Laurie Fishlock will be in Australia with the M.C.C. side will necessitate some experiments on the left wing, but it is thought that Smallwood will fit into that place. RETAINED PLAYERS Height Weight Player and Birthninee. hatless ft. in.

Coventry City GOOD HALVES But A Weakness In Defence COVENTRY CITY, backed up by intensive local enthusiasm, bid fair to justify their promotion to the Second Division. All the best of their forwards of last season are available and in excellent condition. A new forward is McDonald. from Tranmere Rovers, who can take either inside position. The centre is covered three times with Bourton.

Crawley, and Lager, the last-named a young reserve who developed rapidly last season. The half-back line has been well provided for, two departed players having been replaced by Archer. of Everton, who was their first reserve, and Snape. a promising young man from Shirley Town. The defence cannot yet be said to be up to the required strength in view of pos casualties.

Both Pearson and Morgan have been showing great form in tra.ning, so that the club is particularly sound so far as goalkeeping is concerned. RETAINED PLATERS Sleight Weight Player Sal Itirthpiase. Pesitlen it. in. et.

Their trouble was in attack. But the club has wisely realised the weakness and gone out boldly to put matters right. Six nevi players have been secured. Five of them are forwards. The most important newcomer is Cox, from the Arsenal.

Cox is a strong centre-forward who believes in shooting. That is just what Fulham require. They have enough cleverness in the two inside forward positions. Cox will supply the finish. A centre-forward who weighs 12st.

71b. and is fast, capable of shooting with either foot. should round off the work of Hammond and Finch. It is probable that Cox for Perry will be the only important change in the Fulham side. Defensively they are powerful, and Gibbons will again be at centre-half to surprise opposing centre-forwards with his speed and strength.

Fulham are starting the new season with an optimistic outlook. Their rally in the Cup in the last campaign gave the directors that confidence so essential to football success, and, on the advice of their able manager, Mr. Jack Peart, they had little need to worry in the close season about drastic changes. In fact, all the club has it needed to do, in to consolidate the attack and find useful men for emergency needs. RETAINED PLAYERS Haight Weight Moyle and Position ft.

(New Hammers). "WE CAN'T GO ON BEING PIPPED" I AM confident that it will be third time lucky for West Ham United. We can't go on being pipped on the post." That is Manager Charlie Paynter's view of the Hammers' prospects. At times last season West Ham looked the best side in their section. but consistency was not their strong suit.

There is a feeling. however. that the Hammers have it in them. In Holmes, from Sheffield United, they have secured a centre half stand-by for Jim Barrett, and yet another one from been added to the defensive portion of the team, plus an experienced full-back In Adams. from Southampton.

No fewer than four Halls appear on the staff list, and the latest addition to the Hall clan is the one from whom much is expectedgoalkeeper John. He was part of Manchester United's solid rock-like defence which was the main in their promotion campaign: and there are hopes that he will now be concerned in another promotion struggle. Whether, even with Alexander from Millwall to take an outside -right berth. the 'Spurs have done enough new signing to put them in the van is doubtfuL The main hope lies in the men secured late last Grice, arid Ward. George Hunt back in his best form would make a lot of difference, too, but he has to carry all the shock business on his own shoulders, and at the moment it is difficult to visualise the SPors having enough weight in the attack for Second Division purposes.

Manager Jack Tresadern admits that he bee not made all the captures he would I.ke to have made, but the men he wanted just couldn't be bought. So the outlook for the 'Spurs takes the shape of hope rather than RETAINED PLAVRS 14e.ght weight Mayor and Birthplace Position it. in. it. R.
