Many of our people, especially tbe business men of the county, were grieved to learn of the death of "uncle Billy" Russell, the geni? al shoe-drummer, which occurred last week. Mr George Colaw, of Forks of Water, was almost a lone visitor to the ice-clad precincts of the town Thursday. Nothing is more entertaining for the home than a Qrapbophone. Buy one from Slaven on the in? stallment plan. Just received a supply of fine gold rings at Slaven's Jewel? ry store.

We received an invitation to at? tend the formal opening of the new Sun building, Baltimore, on the 17th. A post-card, showing the handsome structure, accom? panied the invitation. Mr Ben Campbell, son of Mr Campbell, a former Highlander, was this week visiting here. He spent Tuesday night at the Com? mercial.

While at work a few days ago near his home on Crab Run, Mr Josiah Wilson unearthed a 12 lb, shell. It supposed to be one of the shells shot, there by the Yankees while stationed on the hi i just north of town. Thev were expect? ing the Southern army up the pike at any time and were firing across the mountain. The old shell nev? er exploded, and not having any particular love for them Mr Wil? son laid it away for safe keeping. I wish to buy a large tract.of good timber if price is low.

Simmous, Crab? bottom, Rodgers, Dy? er Gum, Hightown; A Hiner, Gwin, Trimble, Wilson, Milo, Josiah Wilson, Early Gum, Jas Trimble, Monterey. In the way of personal mention last week we omitted the names of Mesdames Samuel Gav and James Rutledge, of Stony Bottom, who were visiting their sister, Mrs Early Gum, near Monterey. Mr Gwin, who went to Charlottesville to consult an eye specialist, returned Monday. An operation was not deemed advisa? ble at present, and, with the aid of special eye-glasses, Mr Gwin ex? pects to resume his school duties on Monday, The property of the Staunton Horse Show Association on the fair ground near the city consisiting of the grand stand, stand for judges, stalls, sheds, has been levied on through Sheriff Wilson to secure the payment of a note for $1,500 held by the National Valley Bank and the same has been advertised for sale on the 17th A a result of the heavy sleet, telephone lines are down in many directions. Occasional messages coming iu seem to indicate worse conditions west of us.

The ice on the trees is so heavy that timber and fruit trees are in a danger of breaking, and the are more or less obstructed. No damage has been observed about town, but the situation is more picturesque than comfortable. President Roosevelt received a visit from their chief Appaha and several braves of the Utes who were recently on the warpath. Capt. This information is given out in a pri? vate letter, to a Monterey attorney, from Judge Anderson. When the question of au extra term was dis? cussed at last session, the Judge ex? pressed the hope that he would be able to come to Highland in but the promise, if promise at all, was conditional. As it now this important trial will come up at the regular spring term iu April, and the outlook now is for a very lengthy session, for our quiet little county, at least.

False Reports. The report that Mr. W. V. Wat son, who recently moved from Highland to Greenbrier, was dead, was finally "downed," but not un? til his friends here had 'phoned for information.

Since then we have added his name to our subscription list, and have been informed that he is in good health, and tips the beam at plus 200. Another rumor to the effect that Mr. C. C. Arbogast had pneu? monia at his Durbin home, was a mistake, also.

He was a little off in point of health, but the latest says he is "on again and gone again," like Finnigan's wreck. "Golden Beauty" Brings $1700. J. A Kennedy, of Staunton, has sold his cream colored en Beauty, to A. V.

The length of the line is 38 miles from Romney via Moorefield lo Petersburg connection at Romney with the South Branch Railway, which is a branch of the Baltimore and Ohio. Mr A. Spates Brady of Fairmont, is the engineer in charge. A press report quotes Mr Corn? well as saving that contracts will probably be let in January, and the surveys have beeu made.

The greater number of people along this proposed route believe that this road will be built and are in no doubt about it. It is a natur? al railroad ruute and when they have finished it to Moorefield we still have a natural route on by Franklin to Monterey, We hope they will not lose sight of the fact that we are a railroad for-saken Branch Review, "The Times-Dispatch has al? ready given this hint to the farm? ers of Virginia. The state will have thousands aud tens of thous? ands of visitors this year and they must be fed. Virginia farmers should supply the stuff, lt will be profitable to them and a credit to the state. This is our exhibition year and we want the visitors to see for themselves what delicious foodstuffs we produce in Virginia, the farmers take the hint and prepare for market fresh meats aud ham, vegetables and fruit, to say nothing of home made flour and corn meal, lt is a rare oppor? tunity and it should be improved." -1 as i VIRGINIA: At Rules held in the Clerk's Of? fice of the Circuit Court of High, land county, Dec 19, 1906 Mrs Jane I Tennent Pltff against In Chancery Chas Robb others Defts The object of this suit is to en? force partition of 1100 acres and no acres of land conveyed to the plaintiff by deed from Ervine and wife, dated Sept.
