B2 I INLAND EMPIRE The Sun SUNDAY, August 27, 1995 Feedback Store clerk shot in robbery attempt River Drive and Highway 91, at the edge of Orange County, said lral Evans, spokesman for the Riverside County Fire Department. Firefighters from San Bernardino and Orange counties assisted others from Corona, River-side County and the state forestry department, said Riverside County fire spokeswoman Kim Newman. An Orange County fire captain said the strong canyon winds turned the small blaze in Riverside County into a firestorm. "That fire shot straight up these canyons in 20- and 30-foot flame lengths and made it all the way to the tops of these hills, about 1,000 feet, in about 30 minutes," Orange County fire Capt. Dan Young told KFWB radio.

Firefighters saved a home by diverting flames around it, Young said, and one firefighter suffered a cut hand that required stitches. Evans said the blaze was contained by 6 p.m., and firefighters expect it to be out by that time today. Sun Staff like to see where those statistics were found. I agree that out-of-wedlock births shouldn't be happening, especially among teenage parents; but that doesn't mean that you take those children away because no one will ever love a child like their mother or the father. That's a fact.

San Bernardino PATHETIC PLACE: They're talking about cleaning up Bloomington. They ought to clean up Muscoy. It's very pathetic; it's trash. No landscaping, and we just need help to clean up the place. This is pathetic.

There's weeds, there's trash, there's flies and it's just pathetic. You can't drive down the street for the dogs chasing you and the people's racing up and down the street. And they need to clean it up. It's really a dirty town. Muscoy RIALTO EYESORE: We lived in a pretty nice neighborhood until recently.

We have a group home here now, and they do not water the lawn, they do not mow their grass, they don't do anything. It looks like a hayfield, and it's a disgrace to the neighborhood. Hopefully, someone will do something about it. Rialto JUSTICE DELAYED: I've been interestingly following as other people have the letters between Rodney Beck of Fontana and recently Laura Martinez, the attorney against Beck. It's interesting that it took 18 different court appearances before Beck was finally convicted.

This lends something to his statement that there is a problem with our judicial system. It's surprising that with the problems in our judicial system that he even bothered to talk to the attorney or the judge as he tried to do. We have seen Beck's comments in the papers time and time again. And by his outward rage at the policeman, we all know now who Rodney Beck is. It's about time they put him in jail, and he should have been in there longer than three years.

Redlands they don't want to stop crime for the sake of job security. If the people they arrest get poorer as a result of the crimes they commit that's their problem. People are so quick to blame others for their problems. We should all look to ourselves as to what happens in our lives. My husband is a deputy and he would like nothing better than to work a shift without worrying about being killed, seeing a child abused, woman raped, and a teenage gang member kill and him having to tell his mother that her fifteen year-old son her died.

Cops want to stop crime. They get paid to keep people safe. For you Bloomington to insinuate just show how ignorant you are. Fontana KEEP IT CLEAN: It's a beautiful mountain community, and we love it, and we love for people to come and visit. Please do not dump trash and pets up here, and to the person who left those two mattresses, a television set and a box of trash right at the top ofthe Running Springs offramp, we don't need people like you.

But please come and visit us and help us keep our town beautiful. Running Springs OUT OF WEDLOCK: This is for the woman in Fontana who made the comment on out-of-wedlock births. I would like to know who she thinks she is, trying to be God, taking people's children away from them, proposing that people's children be taken away from them. Just because you're a single parent does not mean that you're any less of a parent. And what does she propose divorced couples do once they're divorced? The children should be taken away from those parents as well and given to two-parent families? Aren't there enough children who need homes that don't have any parents? Does she want this to be like another Romania and have a bunch of orphanages with kids in their suffering and nobody wants them? Just the idea of this is ludicrous and shows her ignorance.

And her citing of statistics: I'd Readers offer their views on topics in the news and issues in their communities and lives. Let us know what's on your mind. I'm very concerned about the Board of Supervisors giving the county land fields to Norcal. Privatizing may be the way to go, but the Board of Supervisors is giving them control of all the money.

Isn't that kind of like going to Stater Bros, and just leaving your money on the counter as you leave? I don't understand their careless thinking on this. And I have an idea that we as taxpayers will have to make up the dill'erence ofthe mismanagement of Norcal. Thanks to Marsha Turoci, Barbara Riordan and Jerry Eaves, I think they are going a little too far by giving away the gate money. This is terrible and needs to be looked into. I think there is a lot of hanky pan-ky going on there.

Fontana COUNTY I want to know why the board of supervisors is afraid of opening up the bids for the county land fields? I'm wondering why they just gave it to Norcal. Norcal bid $7 million for the dumps and the county said they could do it and return $10 million to the taxpayers. I want to know who's going to make up that deficit. Probably us taxpayers. It seems to me that somebody's thinking is not correct.

I'm tired of reaching into my pocket. Colton KEEPING THE PEACE: In response to Bloomington comments on law enforcement feedback on Friday. Police are not paid because of any crimes committed. The primary job is to keep the peace. Should there be no crime they will still have a job.

It's ridiculous to think REDLANDS A clerk was shot in both arms early Saturday in a botched robbery at a gas station, and four suspects were arrested eight hours later in Anaheim, police said. Two men with bandanas covering their faces demanded money from the clerk at the Cal-Ten Shell gas station. 94 1 California about 2:45 a.m. When one of the men tried to open the register himself, the clerk ran. A suspect fired at least four shots at him, hitting him once in each forearm.

A customer ducked behind a food aisle and was not hit. The suspects lied without the money. A witness saw the license plate number of the get-away car, and a man and three teens were arrested in Anaheim about 1 1 a.m. The identities ofthe four were unavailable Saturday night. The four are also believed to have robbed a Mobil gas station at 1800 S.

Mountain View in San Bernardino, about midnight. Two suspects robbed a customer of jewelry and the station of $400. Shots were fired in that incident. Bowl serves By Ralph Andrews The Redlands Bowl has something for every classical music lover with varied programs from Bach to ballet. Some concerts are fun; others are on the serious side.

Combining flashy technique with expressive musicianship, Eugene Fodor proved that the two can be combined. Friday's concert opened with Tartini's "Devil's Trill" Sonata, which gets its name from the hellishly difficult trills in the last movement. It was supposed to have been inspired by a dream in which the composer made a musical challenge to the devil. Fodor made it sound easy and also managed to play it with good baroque dynamics. Prokofiev's Sonata No.

Boys' lighter may have started fire YUCCA VALLEY Three boys playing with a cigarette lighter Friday are believed to have started a small brush fire. About two acres of desert were charred about 3:45 p.m. Friday. F'ire investigators found candy wrappers at the scene and linked them to the trio.

The fire threatened some homes. The boys, aged 8, 10, and 12, were released to their parents. Blaze chars about 150 hillside acres YORBA LINDA A fire that began near Yorba Linda quickly moved eastward, charring about 150 acres of brush along a Corona hillside and threatened homes before it was contained Saturday, fire authorities said. The fire started near Green up classical Review two works in one, as it was originally a flute sonata that later was adapted to the violin. In either case, it is difficult partially because the composer wrote beautiful lyric passages along with "in-your-face" sarcasm.

Most violinists, and most flutists, seem to be unaware of this and take the work much too seriously. Similarly. Ysaye's Sonata No. 3 for solo violin could have died, especially in the hands of a lesser player. But Fodor kept it alive with nothing more than technique and expressive musicianship.

Tchaikovsky's "Serenade Melancolique" and Wieniawski's "Legende" are both quiet expressions of sad beauty. Again, fine musicianship kept them from about expansion mergers with other minority-issue papers, joint ventures, publishing on-line through the Internet, increasing publication from weekly to two or three times a week. Only 24 Black publishers are still in business on the West Coast. But Townsend is talking cornucopia being dull at one extreme or sloppily sentimental at the other. The concert ended with Sara-sate's Fantasy on Themes from Carmen. Often described as a flashy crowd pleaser, this work has a profound side to it, but it takes a master to bring it out. For example, a melody is played on high harmonics that are usually nothing more than squeaks that would make a dog howl.

But this time they were rich sounding harmonics and all ofthe same tone color. If forced to say which was the best concert I have seen at the Redlands Bowl this summer 1 would have to say this one. The old saying about saving the best for last is again true as Eugene Fodor will close the season next Tuesday as guest soloist. "If you start telling it like it is and deal with fact and not they respect you," Towns-end said. "The Precinct Reporter refuses to stop doing the story until it's dealt with.
