Mdtasi tuwday, July 17, 1956 Tidbits From A. Crawford has a brother and sister-in-law, Mr and Mrs Robert W. Crawford of Philadelphia, who have embarked on a trip most of us would like to duplicate. They will be visiting England, Scotland, Sweden, Den- Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France. The itinerary is as good as a lesson in geography.

I had a phone call from Julia Cady at Mason City asking where I the previous afternoon. I told her that was the day I was riding around with Mabel Livingston hunting the old Parker farm. She and her son Jerry and his family had stopped here en- route from Lone Rock where they had been dinner guests of Jerry's wife Jeanne's uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs Thompson. She asked if I cared enough about seeing them to be up at six o'clock Monday morning. 1 assured her I most certainly was, so 1 got up at 5:30, all set for them at (i.

Jerry is an M. D. stationed at China Lake, Calif. The family drove out the laiier part of June to attend the wedding of Jeanne's sister. Dr.

Jerry is with the air corps and August 1 Js being transferred to a hospital in San Diego. Jeanne is thrilled at the prospect.of moving into a brand new house. Tliis China Lake where they have been living is squatted right in the middle of the Mojave The place is made bearable with air conditioning, but they will bid it adieu happily and thankfully. They are traveling via station wagon, a nice roomy mode ol transportation for a pair of lively boys, plus a baby. Thanks io Nell Potter I have my bearings on the Charley Parker farm I tried to find.

1 went too far west. The turn is just beyond the Boswell farm and it's the first farm south on the east side of the road. The house burned some time ago, she. said, but now I'm on the right track. Mabel is taking me to Fairmont Saturday to visit Margaret Pannkuk.

If we get home in time, I'll have her run me. down there to really get it in mind correctly. But I think 1 did pretty well for a child of five or six to remember as well as I did. Don't you? 0 My memory was correct on another score. Ida Leffert and Dorothy Colwell called me about the Hulse-Schuldt affair.

It was Ruth, daughter of the and Mrs Hulse who married the Rev. V. Schuldt and whose son David Schuldt was recently married. Ida said years ago Ruth and her daughter Ila Leffert were said to look very much alike. Dorothy said the Rev.

Schuldt was their pastor at Clarion some time ago. I entered the Methodist church Sunday afternoon feeling quite like an old hen which had got its feathers wet. I was assured I dSdn 1 Jook that damp and bed raggled, but there were spots on my knees that were definitely WET. Sunday was a peculiar day, more like April than, July, smiling and sunny one minute, dour and rainy the next. I tried to manage to be on my way to the, Hagg-Black wedding between showers and thought I had figured the right time.

Just as we KOt io front of Hutzell's it began to mist. We were in the middle of the road, so Esther did a marathon to the Dairy Queen building but before we could reach the protecting canopy, it really RAINED. If it hadn't for Hazel Lusby and Pearl Potter coming along in a car and handing out a rain coat for over my lap, I'd have been drenched and missed the wedding. It was a lovely wedding and I never saw a more beautiful bride and charming bridesmaids. Oh, the groom and groomsmen looked fine too, but somehow at a wedding the men don't get the attention they possibly merit.

Dark suits and carnation boutinerres don't intrigue women like laces and tulle and ribbons and fluffy accessories. The reception was perfection from the bride's table to the re- fi-eshments. It was thoughtful ot the bride to have a table prepared for Mrs Clara Hagg, Mrs James Black, Mrs Edna Smith and I who would find holding a tray just a little awkward. When the cake was cut we 1 the distinction of having the upper ornate topping as our center piece. The wedding trip is to Canada, via Spencer.

That shows me it is western Canada they will visit. I have to stop and think that Canada sprawls across the entire northern portion of the United States. To me, unless I stop and think, Canada is across from Detroit only. I have become familiar with the names Kuchenreuther, Kuchynka, Zweifel, Kajewski, Zalaz- nik, and several other hard to spell, but when I talked with Mrs John Thuente the other day I had to have her spell her father's name, Lechtenberg and other relative Bodensteiner. It would be interesting to make a study of names, find out the root, the meaning etc.

Cady is confusing too. I received mail Katie, and Katy. Several years ago a doctor stopped and asked my name, "Cady," I answered, "Katy what?" he questioned. repeated "Cady." He became exasperated. and said sharpely, "well, Katie WHAT?" He gave a meek "Oh," when I said, "It's Evelyn something to tell your fires July 4, July 9 and July 'a fire recently from an overheated stove.

A recent letter from my cousin Edwin in Houston expressed sympathy for the "heat wave" we had. 1 hastened to assure him it was for only a few days. And here we have cool days and wonderful nights. I'm sorry for HIM. I know Texas! I have thought of him frequently and wished he could be here to enjoy the cool days.

4 Joe Cogley and his family finally got here to visit the parents and other relatives. At the time of the wedding of his brother, the children had measles so hjs wife couldn't come. When Joe went home his sister, Mary Helen accompanied him. Now, with the measles over, he and his wife and children have been here on a visit and brought Mary Helen back home. My goodness what has become of "Pepper Young's Family" and "Ma Perkins?" 1 don't like but years ago when I first had my radio, I turned in on those two stories and found them in dilemas of some sort.

I listened till the situations were cleared, then left them to worry along through others, tuning in every several weeks just to see what the author had dreamed up again. It was the most unnatural affairs and no family could survive all the grief and tragedies these families took. The other day I thought I'd find out what Pepper, Peggy, and Father and Mother Young were up to, and Ma Perkins. They are off the air. It's just as well, for the last time I listened Carter Trent, Peggy's beloved husband had died, Linda had been replaced with some one whose voice was not a bit like the old Linda.

It's changes like that which spoil the programs. But "after all, as the years go by, I suppose there are changes in the cast too. Maybe they are merely on vacation but I shan't be too upset if the programs are off for good. Mrs Mary Quinn is a happy woman for the youngest of her family, Madonna White is here from Hawaii, "Bud" Laughlin and his wife, Ernestine (Chubb) will be here in August and Donna's husband will join her here in that month. Now if Philomfna could get here, the family circle would be rounded out with Frances Herbst and Zeta Christensen right here.

Cor Demolished Near Lone Rock A recruiting officer from Mason City, Teus Abbas, received minor injuries when his car was demolished in an accident three miles south of Lone Rock Friday July 6, at 1:50 p.m. Driving west at the time, Abbas came over a hill and saw a roadblock ahead.

To avoid hitting it, he headed for the ditch, and as a. result got a bruised forehead, bruised knees and cuts. He was not hospitalized. Deputy Sheriff Don Wood investigated the mishap. Later in the day.

at 5:50 p.m., a truck driven by John Williams ot Watertown, So. Dak. crashed into the bridge across Black Cat creek miles north of Algona on highway 169. Williams was not injured, according to Patrolmen Dale McBride and Darold Stinman who investigated. Williams reportedly hit the bridge rather than a car and truck which were meeting in front of him.

HOME MODERNIZATION AND "FIX-UP It's Time To Check Home Furnaces NOW THAT the heating season 59 well over, it's a good idea to schedule an early inspection of your heating plant. It is best to do this now for a number of reasons, according to those in the home heating ness.

First, if you have had any heating trouble over the past winter, you will still have fresh in your memory those conditions which caused your discomfort or inconvenience. Thus, they can be outlined in detail to the furnace service man you call in. As the outdoor weather becomes increasingly warmer, your experiences of the past winter will be easily forgotten and so will your heating problems until the first cold days of next winter bring them to your attention again. Then, too, cleaning of the furnace should be done before more of the hot, humid days of summer set in. Accumulations of soot attract moisture and hold it against the metal parts of the heating system, causing rust and corrosion.

If yours is a gas burning furnace, it is generally recommended that you have the pilot burn throughout the summer in order to keep the interior of the furnace free of moisture. Cleaning of the pilot light is I good practice, too, because dyst and lint over the winter season can plug the small pilot orifice! to a point that keeping the pilot light burning is difficult. Your Money May Be Going Down the Drain! Strong, non-streaking and durable gutters can save the homeowner hundreds of dollars in ruined paint, shrubbery and. rotted wood. One of the newest trends in rain disposal products is toward the use of stainless steel by homeowners who want its fine appearance and high durability. Stainless steel roof drainage products cost, in general, a third less than copper.

They are harder and pound for pound, than the other common metals used for drainage systems. Thus it is often recommended for use where trees, steep roofs, and other causes increase the danger of heavy loads of ice and snow. Stainless, an alloy of steel, contains at least 11.5% chromium 'and is practically immune to weather and rust. It will not streak or stain paint with water- soluble corrosion products. It is especially recommended by architects and metallurgists in areas where moist, salt-laden air tends to corrode other metals.

The do-it-yourself homeowner will find that stainless steel roof- drainage products handle in the same way that other materials do. New fluxes are available that make the soldering of stainless as simplfl as any other metal. The handyman owner will find, however, that bending stainless is more difficult than softer metals. He will find this added rigidity is an advantage, because it protects his work from damage by wind, ice, tree limbs and other hazards. Building experts point out that the weathering abilities of stain- FIXIN-UPTIPS Textured Siding Gives Character to House A TEXTURED house siding gives the building character sometimes missing when unpat- terned boards are used.

The still gleaming stainless tower atop the Chrysler Building in New York City has seen more than 9 quarter ot a century of service without ever being cleaned. Texture In Your Decor Color and pattern are important in the total impression which a room makes. But many people overlook the opportunities for distinction which texture offers.

Drapery and upholstery fabrics, floor and wall coverings and lamp shades are few of the many items which lend themselves well to a great variety of attractive textural effects shaggy, smooth and silken, porous, parchment like, etc: A brick wall oi- fireplace is in strong contrast texturally with the rest of the room. Crawl Space, Slab Make Foundation An addition to a house doesn't necessarily require a basement. A'basement is a suitable foundation, of course, but it's fairly compared with a slab foundation or a crawl space. A basement is often preferable for a two-story addition or for an addition built on a steeply sloping site, where the non-basement 'foundation would require high walls. A basement is also worthwhile in extremely cold climates where the foundation needs deep walls that go below the frost line.

But fortunately, most homes are not affected by these three conditions. A concrete slab foundation or a crawl space usually will result in substantial savings. Both the slab and the crawl space require proper insulation to be effective. With a crawl space, mineral wool batts or blankets can be installed between the joists on -the underside of the flooring. The earth in the crawl space should be covered by 55- pound asphalt roll roofing lapped three inches.

This reduces evaporation of moisture from the soil. When mineral wool batts are applied in a crawl space, they are placed between the floor jpists with the vapor-barrier side of the batts up. The batts can be held in place with chicken wire, reinforced with strips of wood. In a slab foundation, mineral wool insulation in a prefabricated form should be installed between the concrete floor and the foundation. It has been learned that concrete slabs lose most of their heat around the edges, not from the broad expanse of floor.

Wood Veneer Tape Ends Edge Problem An inch-wide tape of wood Veneer, so thin and flexible that it is packaged in rolls, is being introduced by United States' Plywood Corporation to solve the Jong standing problem of exposed plywood edges.

The new material is called Wcldwood Flexible Wood-Trim, It is available in mahogany, oak, walnut, and birch to match the most popular plywood faces. With Wood- Trim they can match these edges to the face of the panel, even when edges arc new product can also be used for lumber edging and purposes in the home. Flexible Wood-Trim is sold in rolls of eight feel packaged in reusable plastic containers. Retail lumber and hai'dware dealers throughout the country offer thp material at 79c per package. Growing Family Can Use Porch WHEN A FAMILY begins to outgrow a house, one good solution is to grow the porch.

The porch is the one roofed- over area of the average house that can "be readily converted into additional living space. It can become recreation room for year- round use, a living or dining room, a den or extra bedroom, depending on family needs. The first step- in such a conversion project is to draw up a plan and decide the way to go. If the porch is large, for instance, only half of the space may need enclosing to give the desired result, If it's small, pethaps it can be extended around a corner of the house, making an L-shaped structure. The door needs special attention.

If ils level has to be changed or 1C it is drab and worn, the entire porch area should be re- floored with a durable material such as quarry tile. When light, for interior rooms comes from the porch, be sure that it is not cut off by the conversion job. An entire wall ot or at least a large picture window, will provide light for both the porch and the home interior, and blinds will afford privacy at. night. The present heating system should be used for the converted area, whenever possible.

In any case, be sure of a good heating before going ahead. The tremendous growth of gardening and home landscaping in the United States in recent years is due largely -to an awakening, appreciation and need for the beauties of nature as mass housing spreads, says the American Association of Nurserymen. Tips on Finishing Light Woods For an easy, inexpensive "blonde" finish, first apply a coat of interior white undercoat thinned so that the grain pattern shows through. apply clear shellac, flat vamish 01 lacquer. Attractive and economical one coat stain are also available in a dark stain, first apply coat of clear resin sealer to subdue grain content.
