Football Baseball Golf Outdoors Deaths 4C-10C 11C 12C 15C 16C Section Anderson Independent-Mail Sunday October 23 1994 Bulldogs rebound against Kentucky By Randy Beard Georgia edges Wildcats 34-30 SyAlMuskewitz Indtpntet-Uii LEXINGTON Ky Life should be a little more bearable for Ray Goff this week All week long the Georgia head football coach has been taking verbal shots from fans after the Bulldogs lost to Vanderbilt but the players took some heat off their coach Saturday night by beating Kentucky 34-30 in a thriller at Commonwealth Stadium "After last game and the way we played our team probably freed as much adversity this week and tonight than a lot of people free" Goff said "With what we went through last week and all that was said I be prouder of our players" It wasn't an easy victory There were six lead changes in the game and the Bulldogs (5-3 3-3 SEC) had to survive two fourth-quarter turnovers to pull it out Eric 28-yard touchdown pass to Hason Graham provided the winning points with 4:08 but the Bulldogs still had to hold their breath The victory wasn't sealed until Carlos Yancy picked oil Kentucky quarterback Jeff Speedy with 20 seconds left for his fourth interception of the season Georgia had a 27-16 lead with 12:44 left after Zeier hit Graham on a 55-yard touchdown strike Then things went terribly wrong for the Bulldogs A fUmble recovery deep in Georgia territory and an interception return for a touchdown allowed the Wildcats (1-6 0-5) to take a 30-27 lead with 630 to play Scatback Terrell Davis flimbled at the Georgia 6 with 9:58 left and Kentucky linebacker Eric Wright recovered Two plays later flillback Michael Woodfork pounded it in from the 1 Derrick Smith stuffed Speedy on the two-point conversion and the Bulldogs led 27-22 Zeier was taking the Bulldogs back down field but Van Hiles stepped in front of a pass intended for Jeff Thomas and raced 61 yards to put Kentucky ahead 28-27 Kk Sanford made it 30-27 when he ran for two on a reverse with 630 left It was more than enough time for Zeier to bring the Bulldogs rack It took him five plays to cover the 66 yards necessary to but Georgia back on top "He was fighting to get back on the field" safety Will Muschamp said of Zeier his roommate "Right when he threw it (the interception) he get the guy and thought hey score because I want to be right back out here" is the first time since been here I can remember come back Please see Georgia Page 7C ThaAaocutadPwi Georgia's Robert Edwards blocks a punt by Kentucky's Nicky Nickels Saturday in Lexington Ky use drops Vandy Coaching today has new rules no great revelation that coaches can take themselves too seriously often trying to attach earth-shattering importance to what are simply games people play After all coaching is their Job And don't we all like to believe our jobs are vital that our worth cant be measured just by the paycheck we bring home every two weeks? Unfortunately some inflicted souls simply know when to clock out and get on with the business of enjoying life That thought was rudely reinforced this week when Belton-Honea Path football coach Chuck Fraser went ballistic with a few junior varsity players and Clemson soccer coach IM Ibrahim was supposedly blind-sided by a highly-charged letter his team faxed to the newspapers While Fraser is fairly new to the coaching business and Ibrahim is a virtual icon far his sport at Clemson there's enough evidence to suggest that both come from the same "Scream At Your coaching school a mindset that preaches that respect is something to be demanded no time for coaxing in their coaching From all reports Fraser went too far with his well-known bully act last Thursday night Junior varsity players nave accused him of shameful acts like pushing a Dlaver un against a wall and intentionally kicking a trash can at another player There were enough witnesses for B-HP officials to suspend Fraser from his coaching and athletic director duties for the rest of the year But sadder is that there seem to be any remorse coming from Fraser Three days later and no public Gamecocks talking bowl ByJbnGQstrap Indepauknt-Uil NASHVILLE Trim South Carolina ran out the clock on Vanderbilt and a little more time to reach its bought goal oft of TSBi As for a nostseason bowl game All of the bowl talk that had stopped with two straight losses returned here Saturday when South Carolina used four field goals to win 19-16 at Vanderbilt Stadium The Gamecocks 5-3 and 4-2 in the SEC -now need only one victory in their last three games Tennessee at Florida and at Clemson to merit consideration for a bowl game "We want a bowl game so bad" said tight end Boomer Foster "All of the seniors we all want to be able to go and be the first team to win a bowl game for South Carolina "Today was piv-otaL We had to have this win if a bond garner ingtobeinouri They also needed a one-handed grab by Foster to retain possession of the ball and run out the clock in the last three Ibrahim his reputation for arrogance appears to have finally caught up with him a coach who has done Immeasurable things for Clemson University establishing a program that has won two national championships And when he tries ne can be thoughtful amusing and even charming But apparently not the side his players see after been recruited And now one foolish act an altercation with assistant coach Dwayne Shaffer on Oct 2-threatens to tear down everything Ibrahim has worked so hard to build Ibrahim was suspended for four ghmes because of that incident and apparently the disciplinary action impos himbyl the school was all the Clemson wide receiver Kenya Crooks misses a pass near the end zone as Florida State's Corey Fuller gives chase Saturday Tigers show fight in loss to FSU phens said "It seemed like we were just going to crumble and (the Seminoles) thought we were going to roll Not so fast Florida State got to the Clemson 10-yard line or deeper three more times but the Tigers allowed only three points They also held the Seminoles to 393 yards in total offense not bad considering Florida State averages nearly 100 yards better "We came out and challenged them" said Clemson comerback Andre Humphrey who intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble in the second half Gushed Florida State coach Bobby Bowden: "I thought defense was as good as anybody's in the But offense again looked They easily revered the 30-polnt spread bringing joy to many parlay card holders They improved on last 57-0 debacle in Tallahassee by 40 points Moral victory? Well not for everybody believe in moral victories" Clemson coach Tommy West said you win or you lose "But I leave here with a positive feet big about our football team Our defense fought their guts out all day At first the Tigers looked like they had no guts Florida State took a 14-0 lead on Warrick Dunn's 4-yard touchdown run with 8:45 left in the second quarter And suddenly the Seminoles appeared poised for another blowout looked like we were just going to Clemson linebacker Darnell Ste By Josh Peter baiptndenrtfiil TALLAHASSEE Fla For Clemson fans starving for a morsel of hope defeat never tasted so good For those holding out for victory the hunger strike continues Biting off more than they could chew the Tigers fell to lOth-ranked Florida State 17-0 Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium Clemson suffered its third straight loss and nffiHaiiy fell out of contention for a bowl game Yet when the Tigers (2-5 1-4 ACC) left the field they exited to enthusiastic cheers from their fans Why? Because Clemson made the defeat somewhat palatable how: The Tigers held high-powered Florida State (5-1 54) to fewer than 20 points for the first time in two years minutes Had Vanderbilt gotten the ball back? Surely no one has forgotten last week when Mississippi State zipped through South Carolina's defense diming the last three minutes and scored the winning touchdown Shall we go back to the East Carolina game two weeks ago? Needless to say deception a 13-yarder on third-and-eight from the South Carolina 19 was big "No play sticks out more than the throw to Boomer up the South Carolina coach Brad Scott said "He made a great one-handed catch that made us an feel a little bit Please see Clemson Page 8C Please see Gamecocks Page 9C Drivers expecting race to be quick courage his players needed to speak out about a history of problems the reality of coaching today that be forgotten bv coaches For this is the age of player strikes in the pros and player boycotts in high schools and colleges Life offers too many other options for anyone to allow themselves to be trapped in a negative athletic experience too easy to walk away not to say that athletes must be coddled But neither should they be Competing in athletics is supposed to help build self-esteem and strong bodies and teach values like teamwork and sportsmanship and the rewards of hard work And yes learning the importance of discipline is part or that entire process Unfortunately the locker room has long been an incubator of i machismo I But even a football legend like Woody Hayes had to learn the hard way when he was fired at i Ohio State for punching a I npmsim player during the 1978 Gator Bowl i Many have followed him out the door since I And yet we still have coaches who pride themselves on teaching that seem to learn ntAMOtiSMdFM ROCKINGHAM NC Maybe there was no need to cut the AC Delco 500 by 100 miles Officiate at North Carolina Motor Speedway announced the change for 1995 on Friday But thanks to the repaving of the 1016-mile oval 500-muer is expected to take less time than previous versions "They did a good job repaving the track" said Ken Schrader who will start 24th in the 42-car field "It doesn't look like the tires are going to give up so it might be a fast race and short day Darrell Waltrip starting 22nd said "You've got that unknown about the tires and the surface You're headed into a new venture It's not a typical races at Rockingham goes into the final three races of the season trailing Earnhardt by 321 points Earnhardt aiming for his second straight title and recent tying seventh of his career needs only to average 29th the rest of the way to clinch the championship If he beats Wallace by 50 points Sunday Earnhardt wouldn't even have to show up for the races at Phoenix and Atlanta "We know what all that means but we ain't going to give them a thing" Wallace said going to have to earn every bit of it so many things that can happen out there maybe not done yet4 Earnhardt agreed saying still got to race for it bunch is not going to just roll over and play dead" "Normally you run 10 laps here and slow down three Waltrip said not going to be that way this time It's going to be a grueling race going to take its foil and going to be a fast race" That's fine with pda-winner Ricky Rudd who was the fastest of a lineup in which every starter qualified foster who are fast in the race and going to cotne down to who is able to save the most car for the One driver who cant afford to save anything is Rusty Wallace who reffises to give up in the free of long odds in his Winston Cup championship battle with Dale Earnhardt Wallace who has won three straight ittUKIUMiMi Dale Earnhardt starts today from the 20th position ai he doses in on the points championship i 1.
