"People found out I was coming to Kent State, and they said 'be careful, don't get said Perk Barnes, a graduate student from the Bronx. "They thought this was the place where they have all that violence." "People think this is a school full of flaming liberals," agreed another student. "It's not. This is a very conservative middleclass college. Before I came here, I was under the impression it was full of people who wanted to burn things down." Ironically, the dropping en-rollment has caused one of the major internal problems at the university a lack of money to pay attractive faculty salaries and implement constructive programs.

The state of Ohio appropriates money to its colleges according to enrollment. "The loss ot real income to the faculty is a matter of great Christmas break, we'd have gone all over again," Lewis said. "It was building up the same as the fall of '69 and the spring of '70." The overwhelming opinion, to which Lewis also subscribes, is that the end of the Vietnam War last January extracted from the students the most irritating thorn that nettled their predecessors into revolution three years ago. "There's no single issue that's grabbing them," said Dr. Lloyd M.

DeBoer, marketing professor and chairman of the Faculty Senate. "The Vietnam War, which crystallized them, has ended." "The conducive elements for unity are gone," agreed Vaughn, the student who is still "The students today have no commonality to unite them. There's nothing to get behind or in front of." The only national issue raising visible interest on campus is the Arab-Israeli conflict. Arab and Jewish students have set up tables about 50 feet apart in the lobby of the student center, each group dispensing its own propaganda. Deaths daughter of the late Charles and Elvina Walbeck.

She had Bonser, pastor of Luther discontent in April and May of 1970. Attendance grows smaller each year at the annual May 4 memorial observance for the four students slain during an 11-second volley of National Guard gunfire in 1970. Last May, the turnout was embarrassingly small for guest speaker Norman Cousins. "They're back to football, beer blasts and bonfires," said one campus observer. "I think the pendulum is swinging back toward the 1950s," said Robert L.

Vaughn, one of the few remaining students who was around in 1970 and cares to talk about what is referred to as "The Incident." "It looks as if they want to go back to school," said Vaughn, a 25-year-old Kent native. "The cliques are forming again, and we're back to the good old Kent State social days. "People aren't dejected, so it's not apathy. But there isn't a lot of activism," Vaughn continued. "Nobody gets up for anything except football games, midterms and finals or the 10-hour lab project that's due next week." To infer that Kent State has returned entirely to the taludli, idle-minded, dirty-bucksand- RUTTER On Nov.

Lewis believes the tense Middle East situation could provoke a vigorous demonstration if the U.S. gets involved. "Anybody who thinks we're not going to have any more war protests better go listen to some of the conversations on this campus about what will concern, said Dr. DeBoer, the Faculty Senate chairman. "We received somewhat less than a 3 per cent salary increase last spring.

Before it even started. we were wiped out by the rising cost of living." "We spent years worrying -about revolution," agreed Prof. Murvin H. Perry, dean of the school of journalism. "Now we've found out our problem is money to keep the place running.

The public turned off on us and the politicians at the same time. They are usins it as an excuse to protest their tax dollars going for something they don't approve of." Of greater interest than the Middle East right now is the Miuamerica football conference, that is. Kent State was still in the running for its second straight conference title until Saturday's loss to undefeated Miami of Ohio. The winning football team has united long-suffering "town and gown" fans behind the Golden Flashes, who lost only two of their first nine games and attracted so many enthusiastic spectators that liquor had to be banned from the stadium.

There is no burning social issue to ignite the students, who have quietly turned back to their studies. Most of their activism is directed at academic improvements. Lewis pointed out there were big rallies a year ago for Jane Fonda and Daniel Ellsberg.
