De Gaulle may use the confer statement, but what this might be, only De Gaulle knows.

Usually, even Cabinet ministers do not know. On one occasion five irate ministers resigned in protest against what the president had said on European policy. De Gaulle has scheduled a news conference for Monday. His last By JOSEPH E. DYNAN PARIS (AP) President Charles de Gaulle, who has been on the sidelines while the big three nuclear powers talked in Moscow, takes the spotlight in the coming week in one of his rare news conferences.

AP Marlon Brando, friendly but unsmiling, joined more than 120 civil rights demonstrators at an all-white housing tract Saturday. Brando, tastefully dressed in black slacks and a checkered sports jacket, joined the pickets in midafternoon.

The 39-year-old actor carried no sign, but marched up and down with the others and spent much of his time answering questions from newsmen. He outlined tentative plans for a civil rights television show. He gave few details but mentioned Debbie Reynolds and Charlton Heston as possible participants. The president will, it is call for questions. But these must be put all at once, and some key questions are planted in advance with compliant French newsmen. Only rarely can an unscheduled or embarrassing question get on the agenda, and if it does the president is likely to ignore it. When all the questions are In, De Gaulle begins to reply, talking more than half an hour. If a question he wants to answer somehow fails to get asked, De Gaulle usually gives an answer anyway.

Since returning to power in 1958, De Gaulle has given, on the average, one news conference each spring and another each fall. In October 1958, when De Gaulla was still only premier, he suggested possible negotiations with ence as a platform to reply to Kennedy's actions since then particularly to Kennedy's speeches in Germany, pledging enduring American support to a truly "cohesive" Europe within an Atlantic partnership. Other events, since last January which may call forth comment include the open split between the Soviet Union and Red China, and the partial nuclear test ban accord among the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union. The defense is expected to take at least one more day to complete its case.

Then the judge Sir Archie Marshall will sum up. A verdict is expected by the middle of the week. For Ward, one incidental result is expected to be a big improvement in his bank balance, for paintings and sketches he has done including some of the play girls testifying in the trial have brought more than 3,000 pounds ($8,400) in a London gallery. Gen. Amin Hafez emerged Saturday as the undisputed strongman of Syria. The silver-haired military leader was named army commander in chief and chairman of the ruling National Revolutionary Council. He replaced Ixniai Attassi, who resigned from both posts. No explanation was given for Attassi's sudden relinquishment of power, and no new posts for him were announced.

Damascus Radio interrupted seemed to offer an easing in East-West tension. De Gaulle, touchy as ever on France's place in the world, has asserted consistently that France must have its own nuclear arsenal as long as any other country has one, and must participate on equal terms in any high level global decisions. The President has long predicted a rift between the Soviet Union and Red China which could lead to a settlement in Europe "from the Atlantic to the Urals" as Moscow sought to secure its rear in an inevitable tussle with Peking. France has warned that Paris will not be bound by any nuclear test ban achieved by the "Anglo-Saxons" and the Soviets. De Gaulle has declared that France must continue to develop its own nu and fit despite a recent hospital stay, was among many whites in the protest march.

The group, in fact, was about equally divided between whites and Negroes. The demonstration was the latest of many conducted at Don Wilson's Southwood Riviera development by the Congress of Racial Equality. Police had warned that the pickets, Brando included, would be arrested if they broke any laws. On several occasions officers ordered the actor to keep moving when he stopped to talk with reporters. Prior to Brando's arrival, about 12 CORE members were arrested when they attempted a sit-in at one of the tract buildings.

Authorities said charges of trespassing would be pressed against the group. Brando, too, was threatened with arrest on a disturbing the peace charge as a result of his pauses to answer questions. An estimated 100 regular and reserve police officers were on duty. A balmy sea breeze added to an otherwise pleasant afternoon. But homeowners were fidgety and there were other signs of disapproval.

Three young men who identified themselves as members of the American Nazi party milled about the demonstration area, two of them in uniform. Also on nand were several small boys wearing white robes. They carried placards saying "Down with CORE." The signs also bore the hammer and sickle symbol, an apparent reference to charges from some quarters that the civil rights demonstrators were inspired, in part at least, by Communist sympathies. One of the youths thrust a placard in Brando's face. It read, "Big-deal Brando Hollywood race mixer." A strong denunciation of CORE came at the outset from a spokesman for residents of the homes in the tract.

William Uerkwitz, acting president of the Southwood Riviera Homeowners Association, read a statement charging that the CORE pickets "agitate, demonstrate and disrupt for the sole purpose of keeping a normally quiet residential area in a constant state of turmoil." Uerkwitz said he was speaking on behalf of 600 families in "this beleaguered neighborhood." Brando was released from St. John's Hospital in nearby Santa Monica five days ago after treatment for a kidney ailment. Earlier he had planned to participate in integration demonstrations in Maryland. Headed Council Attassi had headed the army and Revolutionary Coancil since a coup March 8 that brought him and the Ba'ath Socialist party to power and ultimately into a dispute with President Gamal Abdel Nasser of the United Arab Republic that wrecked Nasser's unity plans.

Hafez already held the posts of deputy premier, deputy military governor and minister of defense and interior. He has taken over as the key man in the power struggle that has been going on in Syria the past month. Damascus Radio said Hafez will retain all former posts in his new offices. Will Help Rim Syria Hafez will run Syria with Premier Salah Bitar and the Ba'ath party. He has shown himself the toughest Syrian leader the country has seen in years.

He directed personally the army in putting down an attempted coup by Nasser supporters 10 days ago. He approved the execution of 27 rebels by firing squads. In past coups in Syria the regime exiled or jailed rebels without bloodshed. Last week's shootings were the first executions since 1949. It was not clear what effect Hafez' promotion would have in Syria's political direction or fortunes.
