York (Pa.) Daily Record, Tuesday, August 2, 1977? 1 5' STAN i LMITH'S TENNIS CLASS ii Beat Spain In Davis Cup Test Italian Netmem Advance SPORTS SHORTS jye ey -df A The crowd of 6,000 booed Panatta and showered the court with cushions. Some tried to attack the Italian as he walked off the court, and fistfights broke out between Spanish and Italian supporters. Barazzutti, playing cautiously, took two hours and 40 minutes to overcome an erratic Orantes. Spain's No. 1 player is still suffering from the effects of an elbow injury and recent surgery.

Barazzutti broke Orantes' service in the fifth game of the opening set, lost his service in the sixth and broke Orantes again in the 10th. The Spaniard lost the set with a double-fault. In the second set, Orantes' game improved and he scored repeatedly with brilliant volleys and passing shots. But his shots soon began to lack precision. In the final set Orantes faltered quickly and offered little resistance as Barazzutti took four games in a row and hit home his third match point.

BARCELONA, Spain (UPI) Conrado Barazzutti clinched the European zone Davis Cup final for Italy when he upset Manuel Orantes of Spain, 7-5, 7-5, 6-1, in Monday's opening singles match. With the remaining singles contest a mere formality, the two captains agreed to make it a best of three instead of the five sets stipulated under Davis Cup rules, and Spain's Javier Soler easily defeated Adriano Panatta, 6-1, 6-0, to make the final score 3-2 for Italy. Italy next meets France, the A zone winner, and the survivor of that series will play the winner of the Argen-tinaAustralia match in the final. With nothing at stake, Panatta showed little inclination to put up a fight against Soler, who won in just over half an hour. Panatta, the Italian ace, appeared to be deliberately hitting out some shots.

Chris Evert, Betty Stove, Sue Barker, Virginia Wade, Kerry Reid, Martina Navratilova and Sue Barker lead in the singles PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -For the 10 years Jerry McGee has been on the pro golf tour, he has a lot of money to show for it and few wins.

But one of those wins came Sunday when McGee shot a. two-under par 69 to win the Philadelphia Golf Classic by four strokes with a 72-hole total of 272, 12 under par. Since McGee, a native of Ohio, joined the pro tour in 1967, he has won over $569,000, including $130,000 last year. But until he won Sunday with three birdies on the back nine to pull away from the field, he had only one tour victory, the 1975 Pensacola Open. "It was starting to get to me," McGee said.

"I spent a lot of nights wondering. I just didn't want to be a consistent player, I wanted to win. We are all out here to win." "Golf is a crazy game and you never know what is going to happen," said the 34-year-old McGee. "I've been in contention 20 times at least and played better than I did when I won here," he added. But McGee said he told his wife, Jill, before teeing off Sunday that "honey, the ball has got to start bouncing the right way it's been going the wrong way for too long." It was actually the roll of the ball that gave McGee the impetus for victory.

With Australia's Bob Shearer making a late charge and moving closer, McGee was faced with a 35 foot putt on the 15th hole to save par. "When that baby went in at the 15th, I knew they'd need an eraser to catch me," said the happy McGee. country candidates will report Aug. 12 between 1 and 3 p.m. and tennis, field hockey, and cheerleaders will report between 3 and 5 p.m.
