Tex. (UPI) -Maryland Coach Jerry Claiborne apparently is among the top contenders to succeed Darrell Royal as head coach at the University of Texas. Claiborne, whose undefeated team meets Southwest Conference champion Houston in the Cotton Bowl, said Tuesday he had not been contacted by Texas officials, however.

"Would I be interested in talking to them? Yes, I would. With the tradition Texas has, I'd have to be interested," he said. Maryland Athletic Director Jim Kehoe said Texas officials requested permission last week to contact Claiborne about the Longhorn job. Other prospects include Mike Cambell, who coached under Royal for 21 years, and Fred Akers cf Wyoming, a former Texas assistant who took the Wyoming job two years ago. Akers' team meets Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl this year.
