In spite of the fact that the Santa Fe refuses to stop its Panhandle train No. 501 at Avard, the Frisco is still carrying the eastern mail from St. Louis to Avard. The Santa Fe hoped by not stopping at Avard to force that mail around by way of Kansas City, and thus get a longer haul. The Frisco, however, did not want to lose the haul from St.

Louis to Avard and appealed to the post office department, asking that the company be allowed to haul the mall as their train beat the Santa Fe into Avard by more than one hour. The Santa Fe, though, asked that the maH be sent around by Kansas City. The department, however, has decided against the Santa pe and ord-: ered the mail to be sent over the Frisco to Avard, where it will be transferred to the Santa Fe. However, as tne banta re floes not; stop its train No. Sol at Avard the mail is being left there and delayed.

As the department has ordered the mail to be sent over the Frisco it is probable that an order will be issued requiring the Santa Fe to stop at Avard. If the Santa re reruses to do this it is probable that a heavy fine will be assessed against the Santa Fe in-order to compel it to stop and pick up the mail. J. Miller, a Santa Fe brakeman, who lives at Emporia, is in the company's hospital here suffering from a fractured wrist and many severe bruises. His escape from sure death a few days ago was rather miraculous and showed remarkable presence of mind on his part. Miller was walking along the top of a freight car on a train moving 30 miles an hour near Cedarpoint. He stubbed his toe on a piece of tin which was sticking up from the top of the car.

He was near the end of the car when he started to fall, and to save himself from falling between the cars and meeting sure death beneath the wheels he hurled himself over the side of the car. He was bruised quite badly and one of his wrists was broken. MUST OBSERVE THE RULES. Roads in Transcontinental Association Have Been a Little -ax. Roads in the Transcontinental Passenger association have been brought up with a sharp turn by their chair man, who has, discovered that some of them, through misunderstanding or I otherwise, have been ignoring the regulations governing the issuance of side trip tickets in California in connection with the use of nine months' tourist tickets in a way that is likely to result in a wholesale demoraliza tion of rates.

The chairman has laid down the regulations governing the issue of such side trip tickets in a wav that can not be misunderstood and has called upon the roads to issue explicit instructions to their agents for a strict observance of. these regulations. CHANGE PULLMAN SERVICE. Santa Fe Puts In Service a Sixteen Section Sleeper. Beginning yesterday the Santa Fe is operating a 'sixteen section standard sleeper between Wichita and Kansas City on train No.

18, which' leaves Wichita at 10:10 in the evening and arrives at Kansas City the following morning. Heretofore this service consisted of a twelve section Pullman sleeper and at times the traveling public was placed in an inconvenient position owing to the fact that berths were unobtainable. 1 will do the local work between Kansas City and Newton. The time table that went into effect today gives the Santa pe a scoop over the Rock Island and enables it to handle the mail into Wichita ten minutes ahead of the rival road. No. 5 will arrive heer at 3:00 o'clock and No. 501 will leave ten minutes later.

The latter train will hit the grit in lively, fashion between Newton and Wichita, making the run in 35 minutes, including a stop at the Missouri Pacific crosslcfe near Wichita; the.
