been available for the past six or seven years Holcombe said Holcombe a pilot for Delta Airlines said he sees the airport's primary responsibility as being a of transportation" for industries business and workers traveling in and out of the area Another commission member Jesse Kent works for Eastern Airlines Holcombe said Delta and Eastern both have affiliated commuter airlines ASA serves Delta out of Atlanta and Eastern Commuter serves Eastern Airlines Holcombe said The smaller planes would have no problem landing on the airport's relatively short runways and could provide service to Charlotte and Atlanta Holcombe said Holcombe said he has talked with from Spartanburg County delayed the FAA decision until November when the selection of Anderson was reaffirmed The station will give pilots in the region immediate access to weather information flight assistance and air-to-ground communication that hasn't been possible up to now according to an FAA official The 8000-square-foot one-story structure will eventually employ 80 people with a $1 million payroll It will be leased to the FAA for $1 a year for 20 years Senn said The Anderson County Council has approved two readings of an ordinance to Issue bonds to raise the 1800000 needed to build the station After passage of the ordinance Senn said the "highly sophisticated" structure will go Into preliminary engineering phase Bob Palmer vice president of the engineering firm of Russell Axon the 800-plus acres of land that surround the airport The county owns the land but has given the Airport Commission jurisdiction to lease it out Holcombe said "Commercial (business) and industry is what looking Wiles said The land now is being used for agricultural purposes by farmer Alvin McClain who is under an agreement with the Airport Commission to use the land until Dec 31 Heim said leasing the land for agricultural purposes cuts prospective income Holcombe agreed saying the airport could make much more money by leasing the land to Industry The airport makes atmut $3M0 to S4000 a year from farming Holcomlw said Another ongoing goal at the airport has been to attract and keep ASA about establishing a commuter service in Anderson And Trey Senn executive director of the Planning and Development Board said he has discussed commuter service with several airlines But they said that so far nothing has materialized from those talks Senn say whether a commuter service could be established before the end of the year The most reasonable goal he said would be for the airport to complete Its runway lighting system and extend one of Its runways to show commuter airlines that progress is being made at Anderson County Airport Along with the completion of the runway lighting system the airport is hoping to have a groundbreaking for the new automated flight service station before the end of the year Anderson County was selected as the site for the automated flight service station in 1984 But protest said recently that the plans and specifications should be complete by July 1 and then will go for review before the FAA and Anderson County- Assuming the plans are approved Palmer said bids for the station could be received as early as August and that construction could begin no later than October The flight service station should be complete by October 1986 Palmer said Another goal is to get an instrument landing system that could almost guarantee safe landings In bad weather The FAA will install and pay for the upkeep of an ILS if it feels one Is needed at the airport Wiles explained If the runway Is extended and commuter flights are established Wiles said the iLS "could almost go hand In Since 1952 CMS Garage and Body Shop By Martha Reinke SUfl Writer If the Anderson County Airport can lengthen its runways it will be in a better position to attract private jets and possibly a commuter airline service says Planning and Development Board Chairman Pete Stathakis And that combined with the building of the state's only flight service station will make Anderson County Airport good an airport as anybody on the East Stathakis said In an effort to meet the increasing demands of businesses and industry the airport is taking steps and making plans to provide better service to residents of Anderson County As another way to increase revenue and attract business to the airport the Airport Commission may lease some of its Hoo-plus acres of land surrounding the airport as a possible Industrial park said Airport Manager Willard Heim Steps were taken in 1984 to improve services at the airport according to county officials The airport received a grant to pay for a complete overhaul of the runway lighting system and It established its first set of rules and regulations said Airport Commission Chairman Gary Holcombe In 1985 the airport hopes to oiitain another federal grant that would pay for the extension of at least one of the runways to enable larger planes to land said Jerry Wiles vice chairman of the Airport Commission The runway extension and the building of the automated flight service station will make the airport eligible for an Instrument Landing System that would enable any plane to land in bad weather Wiles said The airport commission also is taking steps to establish better communications between fixed base operators and vendors at the sir-port Wiles said He said the commission has had problems in the past with fixed-base operators disagreeing with members of the airport commission hope we have put a stop to that I think we already have" Wiles said see IS as a start of a series of developments that will keep the airport in line with the rest of the growth in Anderson County" said Heim who started working as the airport's full-time
