"ii- CS The Sun FRIDAY, March 17, 1995 PREP SPORTS: ROUNDUP Fontana, Redlands have inside track to CBL title 4 VV' sa Clemann (OF), Amanda Her-rington (IB), Nebel Tawsha (OF) and Mikki Theis (OF). None of the returners is even a senior. Apple Valley and first-year coach Jim Landreth also should be helped out by junior shortstop Felecity Willis, who's coming out for softball for the first time. She's played on the baseball team in the past. VICTOR VALLEY: The Jackrabbits return five starters from last season's 12-11 team that finished in a four-way tie for third in the league.

All-league' pitchersecond baseman Andrea Smith, a sophomore, returns along with sophomore Heather Rothwell (SS1B), junior Kristina Diaz (SSOF) and seniors Melissa Cannon (OF) and Nicole Lopez (PSS). WHS also should get help from seniors Shawndra Alexander (3B) and Kristina Padilla (IB), and junior Christine Franchvilla(3BlB). Freshman Amber Littlefield figures to start at catcher. Sophomore Sandi Padilla should help out at second and in the outfield. EISENHOWER: The Eagles return five starters from last year's third-place squad.

All-league second baseman Michelle Jackson, a senior, and outfielder Qura Hills, a junior, lead the list. Junior first baseman Becky Hill and sophomores Rhea Lam-pa (shortstop) and Krystal Montgomery (3B and OF) also return for coach Angel Agudo. Top newcomers figure to be juniors Deanna Lopez (catcher) and Rachel Ramirez (IB), sophomore Clarisa Harper (utility) and freshman Melinda McKeehan (in-fielder and pitcher). The Eagles have not won a CBL title in softball since 1988. Softball preview league seniors Talia Tiburzio at shortstop and pitcher Nicole Allen.

Senior Shanna Pimentel (PI DH) and junior Aron Leonard (2B) are the only two other returning starters for coach Dick Bruich's squad. Senior Kim Metzger takes over at catcher, while juniors Andrea Rodriguez (3B), Sarah Beckham (IB) and Dawn Zimmerman (OF) should help out. Freshman Azita Williams (OF), Jennifer Jaggers (utility) and Melissa Almeraz (C) could all see significant playing time. HESPERIA: It's been three years since the Scorpions won four consecutive San Andreas League titles from 1989-92, but they should be in the running for the CBL title this season. Hesperia returns six starters from last season's third-place team.

Pitchers Raquel Jones, a senior, and Amanda Dorow, a junior, return, as does all-CBL catcher Jamie Kindell. Senior shortstop Eda Ca-nales, junior center fielder Vanessa Donatini and sophomore second baseman Laura Ashby also are back for coach Kathy Mclntyre. Sophomore outfielder Shana McWilliams and junior first baseman Tammy Wilson should help Hesperia. APPLE VALLEY: The Sun Devils return seven starters from last season's 9-13 squad that finished in a four-way tie for third place in the league. All-league performers Shan-nan Cast (C), Priscilla Flores (P 2B) and Cyrystal Ruddock (P INF) return, as do starters Melis By Dan Evans Sun Sports Writer For half a decade, Fontana Tias owned the penthouse in Citrus Belt League Softball.

After a mad scramble left the Steelers tied with Redlands for first place last season, and the other four teams two games back in third, it would seem that nothing could be more balanced than that. Maybe not. While Redlands and Fontana still might have a slight edge over the rest of the league, the other four CBL schools all seem to be improved from last year. A preview of each team, in its predicted order of finish: REDLANDS: The Terriers return seven starters from last year's co-championship team, the school's first Softball title since sharing the 1990 title with Fontana and Moreno Valley. Redlands' 'battery of sophomore pitcher Melissa Lukkonen and senior catcher Jennifer Hunt, the league's co-MVP, is back.

All-league third baseman Carrie Michaels, who hit .337 last season, also returns for coach Steve Thornburgh. Redlands also returns juniors Jamie Handgis (OF) and Jaime Hackleman (SS2B) and sophomores Keri Mishimoto (2BP) and Devon Jenkins (OF). Junior Stacey Bindner (1BP) and freshman shortstop Erica Andrade both figure to make contributions. "The league is going to be real balanced again," Fontana coach 'Steve Hernandez said, "and what's going to make it interesting is playing three rounds against each other." Instead of playing 10 league games like last season, CBL schools will play 15 this season. If anyone seems to have a slight advantage, though, it would be Fontana. A preview of each CBL school, in predicted order of finish: FONTANA: Those who think pitching wins championships have to like Fon-tana's chances with the return of Kris Stevens and Rocky White. They helped the Steelers to a second-place finish in the league last year and are two of the league's better returning start-; "ers. But Hernandez, in his 11th 1 year coaching the Steelers, said his team will have to build around the pitchers.

Third baseman Gabe Martinez is the only starting position player returning. Top newcomers should be Ralph Sierra, who's been a back-up varsity catcher for two sea-sons; Mike Torres, who will spend most of his time in right field; and sophomore shortstop Ramon Villalvazo. REDLANDS: The Terriers will have to rebuild quickly if they want to defend their CBL championship (their first since 1981). The only returning starters off last year's 15-15 squad are to Northpark Boulevard, right on Northpark to Mountain, right to Hill Drive. HESPERIA: The Scorpions lost most of their pitching from last year's team that took fourth in the CBL. The only returning pitcher of significance is senior right-hander Sam Campos, who was 6-2 with a 2.10 ERA. "We're young, but we can contend for a playoff spot," coach Bob Graddillas said. Hesperia does have some returning talent in the field in senior SS Matt Lewallen, who was All-CBL while hitting .338 last season, and senior OF Perry Highfill, who scored 12 runs last season. Junior OF Ryan Brown and senior 3B Chuck Davis also saw playing time last season.

APPLE VALLEY: First-year coach Lonnie Keeter is familiar with the High Desert he was a Mavericks hitting instructor in 1991-92 but it's going to take awhile to learn about the CBL. "Right now, I'm more concerned with who we are than who we're playing," said Keeter, who played professionally in the Rangers and Red Sox farm systems. The Sun Devils don't return much from last year's last-place team. The only seniors are Dami-an Rice (P), Geoff Cadena (SS), Joey Martinez (CF), Clint Anderson (PDH) and Ryan Bentley (C). Keeter said freshman Justin Anderson will start in RF.

The Terriers got off to a decent start, splitting half of their first six games. Coach Bob Ramirez is looking for big seasons from seniors Mark Maines at third base, Victor Macias at second base and Phil Jenkins in the outfield. Juniors Kelvin Day (P1B), Rick Dykstra (Pinfielder), Rob Dykstra (OF) and David Lund (P) will have to develop in a hurry. EISENHOWER: The Eagles got off to a good start this season, making the finals of the San Gorgonio Tournament before losing to La Sierra in extra innings.

Ike returns four starters off last season's fifth-place team that was 11-16 overall. All-league shortstop Hank Enriquez, who hit .326, returns for his senior season. Senior John McKee, who hit .391 with 22 RBI last year, returns to the outfield and will pitch. Senior catcher Kevin Doyle (.283 last year) and sophomore second baseman Hubert Parker (.280 hitter) also are back. VICTOR VALLEY: The Jackrabbits became a power in the CBL last season, finishing a game behind Redlands and tied with Fontana for second place with a 6-4 league record.

All-league shortstop Nick Garcia returns, as do seniors Sal Uribe and Jose Ramirez. Coach Joe Vargas, starting his 12th season at WHS, is hoping newcomers Chris Simmons (C1B) and Jahmal Williams (OF) can help out. The Jackrabbits have a scheduling disadvantage in that they have to make six trips down the Cajon Pass, including two varsity coach for two years at SBHS before taking over for Kay. "From my standpoint, I put a lot of pressure on myself," Perong said. What made matters worse was that Perong didn't have any assistants that taught at the school and could not find much help in handling player eligibility and fund raising.

Having an 8-17 team that finished tied for sixth in the SAL this past season didn't help either. "This is something that was kind of building the whole season," Perong said. "But I didn't want to make a decision (right after the season) in the heat of battle. I wanted to give myself a month or so and then see how I felt. "My feelings didn't change, so I resigned." mm San Bernardino boys basketball coach quits CEILIULJILAD3 PHGME Mark and Brenda Lehman Authorized Agent for AlRTOUCH" Cellular How NO Programming Fee NO Processing Fee NO Hidden Charges Service Activation By Dan Evans Sun Sports Writer For San Bernardino's Scott Perong, coaching boys high school basketball just wasn't fun anymore.

So he resigned from one of the county's high-profile sports programs. "I was angry and irritated all the time," said Perong, who turned in his resignation to SBHS principal Karen Craig on Monday. "I just didn't want to be a head coach anymore." In two seasons with the Cardinals, Perong compiled a record of 24-29 after replacing Scott Kay. Kay had won or shared in nine San Andreas League titles in the previous 10 seasons and had won a CIF Division 4-AA title in 1989.
