e-5 Style and substance beat the Celtics in Game 1 Monday, May 28, 1984 The Sun Commentary By STEVE DILBECK Sun Sports Writer BOSTON Well, that was a blow against the working man. Hollywood over the old school, movies over books, Calvin Klein over Levis. Hope they recover. They'll take it pretty hard if the Lakers keep this up. How will they explain it to the guy on the street? The Lakers are supposed to be all glitz and no sweat.

They're the guys in the limos, the Celtics the guys in the Fords. The Lakers play before stars in a modern, air-conditioned arena. They relax in hot tubs, drive fast cars, wear designer clothes, hang out at private clubs and sip martinis. The Celtics play before guys from down the street in an aging sweat-box. They relax on the porch, take cabs, shop at K-Mart and hang out at the local bar, where any man worth his paycheck drinks beer.

Boston's Cedric Maxwell says they're America's team, so you wonder if maybe the Russians are at it again. Is baseball next? Call the CIA. Is this legal? Is this possible? After some three hours of sleep following their Garden until an hour before the game. You think that's an example of all flash and no muscle? Abdul-Jabbar scored 32 points and had eight rebounds. Magic was around, too.

Mabye you noticed. He only had 18 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and four steals. There was nothing real fancy about it, either. No showboat stuff. Magic wasn't just grinnin'.

He was winnin'. "Which way is the shower?" Magic asked after the game, needing directions for the first time Sunday. You believe these guys are really all fluff and no you think Bird hangs out at the beach? Cash it in. Take that approach and the Lakers will kill you. It's a hoax, basketball's great fabrication.

These guys bang, work and sweat with the best. All that Hollywood stuff is going fake you out worse than any move Magic has. "I don't think you get to the championship series four times in five years without hard workers and blue-collar types," said current Laker and ex-Celtic Bob McAdoo. "That image is just a fallacy." The Lakers, blue-collar workers? Oh, the pain. Suck it up.

Be brave. It's true. Sure, you look at Lakers coach Pat Riley strutting along the sidelines like he just stepped out of Saks Fifth Avenue, and you wonder. You hear about Lakers owner Jerry Buss and all his bucks, young women and the high life. You read of Magic's millions.

It's so easy to resent. All that success, and glamour, too. But you'd better forget about it. It'll soften you up like a boxer working on the body before he goes for the KO. "I don't know about all that image stuff," Magic said.

"With this team, it doesn't matter what every-, one thinks. We don't worry about it. We just play basketball." Yeah, and they can play it a lot of ways, too. It's only the first game and all that, but the Celtics know they're going to have a tough time of it now. There'll be no Mack truck rolling over the Mercedes.

Just a couple of working stiffs going at it. defeat of the Phoenix Suns Friday night, the Lakers spend nine hours traveling to Boston Saturday and then go out Sunday and clobber the Celtics 115-109 in the NBA championship series opener. The rested Celtics were only 9-0 at home during the playoffs. Yet it was the Lakers jumping out to an lead. The team America loves to hate was running all over the proud Celtics.

Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson. West Coast vs. East Coast. Flashdance vs.

Rocky. The Laker Girls vs. the Garden organist. Trendy vs. tradition.

Forget it. This was all Lakers. And it could have been a lot worse. Did you notice when the Celtics made their rally that the Lakers had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson on the bench with four fouls each? And 37-year-old Abdul-Jabbar barely made it to the game. After that marvelous little flight across the country, during which he tried to catch a few winks on a too-small airline seat, he came down with a migraine headache.

He didn't make it to Boston Lakers Nicklaus wins own tourney in playoff Golf roundup Associated Press DUBLIN, Ohio A putting lapse by Andy Bean paved the way Sunday for Jack Nicklaus, who won his own Memorial tournament on the third hole of a sudden death playoff. "After two long years (without winning), I can't think of a better place to end that string," said the 44-year-old Nicklaus, the founder, sponsor, host and course designer of the "Over the last couple of years, people have been shooting 65s and 66s at me to keep me from winning. This time somebody did something to allow me to win." Nicklaus won this title, the 70th of his PGA Tour career and his first in two seasons, with a routine par on the third hole of a playoff when Bean three-putted, missing a 34 foot putt. Carner wins at Corning CORNING, N.Y. JoAnne Carner captured her first LPGA title of the year and 40th of her career Sunday by shooting a 70 for a 4-stroke win over Ayoka Okamoto in the $150,000 Corning finished 7-under-par with rounds of 71-69-71-70 for a total of 281 for a $22,500 victory check.

Clark leads British PGA WENTWORTH, England Eriton Howard Clark took a four-stroke lead after two rounds in the rain-interrupted British PGA Championship Sunday. He shot a 69 Sunday for a 133 total. Kestner wins TPS tourney ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The Celtics had a chance to pull within three on a fast break, but Cedric Maxwell was called for charg-' ing into Magic. Their biggest threat had ebbed. Bob McAdoo had three consecutive shots blocked and Boston was still within five with 1:10 left to play," but Abdul-Jabbar stole the ball from Dennis Johnson on a drive and fed to Cooper for a breakaway slam, and that pretty much decided it. The Lakers had taken away the Celtics' home-court advantage. The Celtics had been 9-0 at home in the playoffs.

The Lakers collapsed inside and tried to make the Celtics beat them from outside, a strategy that worked out. The Celtics shot just 43.6 percent. After shooting 72.7 percent in the first quarter, the Lakers settled at 51.8 for the game. And Game 1 of the Magic-Bird confrontation had to go to Magic, who had 18 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and four steals in 38 minutes. Bird led all rebounders with 14, but never found his scoring groove.

He hit 7-of-17 shots, doing most of. his damage at the free-throw line to finish with 24 points. He also had five assists and six turnovers in 42 minutes. "It's not me vs. Bird," Magic said.

"It's Lakers vs. Celtics. It's mostly a lot of hype. The hype is good for basketball but I don't go looking around for Larry. "Larry's going to score more points than me.

I'm no 30-point man. We can't get involved in a personal battle." The team battle is now scored 1-0, Lakers. Riley likes to say the playoffs don't start until the, home team loses. And like in Sunday's game, the Lakers are off to a quick start. Lakers notes Kevin McHale continues to be a mystery to the Lakers.

He had 25 points and eight rebounds off the bench. The Lakers had better luck with him when Abdul-Jabbar started to guard him after Parish' fouled out McHale on the four days between games: "When CBS says you rest, you rest." Deciding to go with size over speed, Riley again started James Worthy at forward, moved Cooper to guard (at least offensively) and benched Mike McGee, who did not even play. Worthy responded with 20 points. Jones said he would guard Magic with whomever guarded him, which turned out to be Henderson. He did, too.

This was something of a surprise since most observ-' ers figured Dennis Johnson, a better defender and three inches taller than Henderson, would take Magic. The Celtics outrebounded L.A. 47-42 21-12 on the offensive boards Magic was left with a sore left knee and Worthy a sore ankle. (Continued from C-l) best, filling the thick Garden air with skyhooks and jumpers. He hit his first seven shots and ended with 32 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

He hit 12 of-17 from the floor. "The man was on fire," said Celtics center Robert Parish. "I'd like to say I could have played him differently, but he wasn't scoring all those points accidentally." With Magic Johnson also hitting early from outside, the Lakers went from being down 4-3 to leading 20-6. It was some kind of spurt. "When you see Magic hitting those jumpers, you know it's going to be a long day," Parish said.

The Lakers led by as many as 18 points before Kevin McHale led a mini-charge that had Boston trailing 34-22 at the end of the first period. A Michael Cooper three-point hoop at the buzzer gave the Lakers a 65-52 lead at the half and they upped it to 19 points midway into the third quarter before the Celtics began their comeback. To that point, Cooper's defense had pretty well taken care of Larry Bird, who had hit only 2-of-7 field goals at the half. Even when he was able to shake loose from Cooper, he was usually double-teamed. But then Riley, the Lakers coach, found himself having to place both Magic and Abdul-Jabbar on the bench, each with four fouls.

When Magic joined Abdul-Jabbar on the sidelines with 6:12 left in the third period, the Lakers were up by 19. By the period's end, they led just 92-88. The Celtics went on an 18-6 surge as Bird got untracked. He scored their last eight points of the period, including a three-point field goal at the buzzer. The big lead was all but gone.

"That three-pointer was like a dagger to the heart," Riley said. "If we were going to crack, that was the time." Instead, Magic and Abdul-Jabbar started the final period and rookie Byron Scott finished off two quick fast breaks, and the Lakers regained command. Parish, continually frustrated at having to guard Abdul-Jabbar, fouled out with 7:23 to go. He finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
