Although ihe'i i rookie on the Red-lands squad, she In hrr seventh year of gymnastics. Her specialty is the balance beam. Although this Is her first out-oftate -ompetitlon, she's not at all Intimidated by that or the possibility of a competing before a big crowd. "This is going to be Just like any other meet," she said confidently, "Just farther away." She admitted that there are some nervous moments, but those occur before the meet. "I think about the spectators and the competition, then I close it out of my mind and concentrate on what I have to do." Cocchia, a freshman at Aquinas High School, said she became interested in the sport after watching gymnastics on television.

"I liked the other sports, but this (gymnastics) is best." she confessed. Pennell. a sophomore at San Gorgo-nio High School, began gymnastics when she was 11. She said she was Initially interested in baseball but "mom "wanted me to be a gymnast." Fortunately, she said, "I like gymnastics a lot." She expressed confidence about the upcoming regionals as she prepared for her daily four-hour workout with a series of stretching exercises. Pennell said 10 different moves are required on the uneven parallel bars.

She has also been working on routines for her floor exercise routine. Floor exercise requirements are rated and she said, noting that A's are the least difficult, B's are difficult and C's are the most difficult. In competition one must accomplish 1 2 B's and any number of A movements. "The backflip with a full twist is my most difficult floor exercise that I do," she said. Asked about trying for the 1988 U.S.

Olympics gymnastics team, Pennell said 'That's really too far off to think about right now, I'm Just trying for a college scholarship at this point." Although it would be a great experience, Cocchia, too, said the Olympics were too far off to think about right now. Blount was more definite. "I'm definitely going to shoot for the "88 Olympics as well as a (college) scholarship," said the eighth grader at Serrano Intermediate School. All agreed that the four- to five hour daily workouts were somewhat of a grind and leave little time for anything else. Practice begins at p.m.

on most days which makes It 9 or 10 at night before the girls head for home. And then, of course, there's the homework that must be done before practice. Taylor confirmed that gymnastics Is a time-consuming sport "We have three different levels here." Taylor said. "Class Ills practice 15 hours a week hile Class I and II personnel work out 19 hours a week during the season." All the practice and competition also means a lot of involvement in the club by their parents Robert and Pat Cocchia; Wilson and Bobbie Blount; Major and Mrs. Larry Pennell.

The season for Classes I and II run from September to May while for Class III the season runs from late August to September. Because all of the girls on the team practice together, close friendships and formed and there is a certain comrada-rie established among the athletes. If one girl is trying an especially difficult manuever or exercise, the others are somehow aware of the importance of support. When the girl has completed the attempt, successful or not, cheers and applause are frequently heard, Taylor said. Additionally, Taylor and his assistant coaches Diane Lien and Jerry Glass, try to plan special activities for the group to break the monotony of training.

Taylor, at 28, said he has always excelled in gymnastics and came close to making the Olympic team, "but I didn't quite pull it of so I decided to help someone else make it." He graduated from Long Beach City College, attended the University of Southern California and graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in physical education. Pennell, Cocchia and Blount were also unanimous that Taylor has been the best teacher they've had so far. "He pushes us pretty hard, but he's got confidence in us and that's what counts." junior tennis pony league PRE SEASON TOURNEY Five teams were left In contention for the tournament title after weekend games In the Pony League Pre Season Tournament at Elks Field near Wild wood Park.
