THE BROWN COUNTY WORLD. February 1, 190t OFFICIAL District Court. A. Cottrell bas brought mandamus proceedings against the board of County Commissioners that he may secure the office of justice of peace in Powhatan township. Probate Court.

Miss Elizabeth Burk had charge of his office during his absence. Monday Al Rodgers was adjudged insane. He will be taken to an asylum as soon as there is room for him. Daniel Maxwell has made final settlement of the estate of Elizabeth Max well. Ellen Patton was appointed administratrix of the estate of J.

W. Patton. Frances Patterson has been appointed guardian of Will Maud Edna, Mabel and Glenn Shafer, minor heirs of Mary Ann Shafer. Justice Court. Denver Swisher and Will Hardin appeared before Justice Hess in Powhatan township and swore out a warrant for George Taylor charging him with stealing 200 bushels of corn from them.

Justice Hess is holding to the books of his office though a successor has been appointed. To avoid any legal difficulties another warrant was sworn out for Taylor in Justice Klinefelter's court. The case will be tried Friday morning at 10 o'clock. The case of the State vs. Geo.

W. Taylor was tried before Justice Klinefelter Friday and Taylor sent to the county jail until his fine of $5, and costs of $57.95 are paid. Taylor was charged with grand larceny, but County Attorney Means had the charge made petty larceny. Taylor was arrested for stealing corn of Hardin Swisher the Kickapoo reservation. The case of the State vs.

E. Kneisel has been continued until Feb. 16. J. A.

Jonas sued W.m. A. Hall, of Horton, for $21.50 commission on the sale of real estate. Justice Guelich gave Jonas the decision Saturday. Geo.

W. Taylor is charged with grand larceny and if convicted will be given a long term in the penitentiary. Indian Murdered. At a dance held at Will Ogden's house on the Iowa Indian reservation near White Cloud Jan. 21 Murray Campbell, a quarterbreed Indian, was fatally shot by Joe Deroin, another quarterbreed.

Campbell died Sunday afternoon. Deroin has left the country. Deroin went to the dance in an intoxicated state. He commenced flourishing a revolver and while it was being taken from bim Campbell was shot. Der oin is a relative of the Deroin who was murdered on the reservation about a yearan a half ago.

The Council. Toe council met Monday with six councilmen present. The members refused to accept the resignation of Mayor Hunter. H. G.

Amann was made a member of the water and light committee. C. J. Hardin was appointed a member of the library committee. Dr.

Shirley was made chairman of the ways and means committee and Geo. Maglott appointed on it. The following bills were allowed: H. Burk, labor on 2 10 D. W.

S. Foster and others, asking the city to prohibit the burning of trash or waste in the streets and alleys, was read and referred to the ordipance committee. The quarterly report of the treasurer was read and accepted. A committee composed of Samuel Bierer, John Kerrigan and John Sterns, was appointed to revise the rules and order of business. Horace Amann, Geo.

Maglott and Samuel Bierer were constituted a committee to confer with a committee from the commercial club in regard to extending the city limits. Ordinance No. 78, regulating the conduct of billiard and pool halls an 1 prescribing penalties in certain cases, was read for the first time. Teachers' Examination. Teachers' examination was held in the court room Saturday.

Twentyseven took the examination. Fourteen of them were from Robinson. It was an unusual number for the January examination. A Bad Boy. Frank Hinkle got into a fight at spelling school near Stella, Friday night.

A warrant was issued for him but he skipped. Saturday night Sheriff Cole, of Ne5 maha county, took him back stand trial. Trouble at Germantown. Geo. Strube appeared before Justice Klinefelter and swore out a warrant for Ed Knisel charging him with assault with intent to kill.

The date for trial has not been set. The trouble occurred Friday when Koisel hit Strube over the head with a board. EVENTS Among the Sick. Mr. Gillette, Miss Bertha Hazen, Mr.

Bechtel, Della Bechtel, Mrs. John Schupp. DEATHS McQuilken. Father died at his home, southwest of town, Monday morning at 4:30. He was 81 years of age, and leaves a wife and six children.

The funeral will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. A. B. Buckner will conduct the services.

Cotant. Mrs. Allie Cotant died at Horton Sunday, Jan. 27, of quick consumption. She was sick only a short time, her health beginning to fail about six months ago.

She leaves three children to mourn her loss. Her husband was a railroader and was killed in a wreck a few years ago. BIRTHS Donley. Born to Mr. and Mrs.
