ATHENS Two things became apparent at Sanford Stadium Saturday South Carolina is on the verge of being a good football team and Georgia is well on its way to its worst season in 20 years An emotional South Carolina team playing for teammate Scott Sinclair who died this week of unknown causes overcame three turnovers and an eight-point deficit in the first half to defeat Georgia 27-20 before a crowd of 60 100 The victory improved the record to 3-1 Georgia dropped to 0-3 its poorest start since 1958 South Carolina coach Jim Carlen made it clear early in the week what his Gamecocks were going to do against Georgia Speaking to the Atlanta Touchdown Club Monday he told the group his game plan was to run right at the Georgia defense with running back George Rogers Carlen stuck to the strategy but defense stop Rogers or the rest of the Gamecock running backs Rogers who played most of the game with an injuried elbow carried the ball 28 times for 152 yards to lead the way as South Carolina rolled up 283 yards on the ground and had 118 through the air game plan was to run straight up the middle as much as we Carlen said knew they had a lot of young people playing up front on the defensive line and that was where we needed to Although Georgia was in the game on the scoreboard until the end the Gamecocks dominated the game statistically from start to finish South Carolina had 25 first downs to eight Seven of eight came in the first half had a great opportunity to win a football game Georgia coach Vince Dooley said getting closer but still not a very sound football team We must learn that we whip ourselves Carolina gave us a lot of chances to take control of the game but we kept making a lot of Dooley added a good football team like South Carolina got to take advantage of the opportunities they give you or going to get beat like we did Fumbles hurt South Carolina in the first half The Gamecocks turned the ball over three times deep in their own territory Two of the turnovers resulted in field goals of 40 and 41 yards by Rex Robinson in the second quarter was overthrown only other touchdown came as a result of a 45-yard punt return by Scott Woerner The junior punt returner and comerback was not scheduled to play this week after hurting his ankle last week against Clemson but played the entire game Woerner took the ball on the Georgia 20 and found an opening up the middle and went 45 yards before being dragged down on the South Carolina 30 With Buck Belue at quarterback Georgia gave the ball to Norris six straight times to bring the ball down to the South Carolina one An illegal motion penalty by Georgia brought the ball back to the six-yard line but on the next play South Carolina was called for pass interference when Belue tryed to hit Lindsey Scott in the end zone That put the ball on the one and Norris scored on the next play to give the Bulldogsa 20-12 lead at the half That was all the offense Georgia could generate as the Bulldogs only got one first down the second half The Bulldogs suffered from the loss of their starting linebackers in the second quarter Freshman Will Forts (ankle) ana sophomore Jimmy Payne (knee) both went down with injuries in the first half and never returned to the game The score change in the third quarter even though South Carolina had drives of 74 and 30 yards stopped The best opportunity to score came in the third quarter when they drove from their 25 to the Georgia one But a fumble by Percy Reeves on the one was recovered by Georgia cornerback Dale Williams to stop the drive South Carolina tied the game early in the quarter after a pass interception by comerback Jeff Bowen of a Buck Belue pass on the Georgia 32-yard line Spencer Clark carried it over from the three and Harper hit Rogers in the end zone for the two-point conversion to tie the score The winning touchdown came on another turnover by Georgia Pybum hit running back Matt Simon for a first down on the Georgia 28 but Simon was hit and fumbled the ball and South Carolina recovered It only took four plays for the Gamecocks to score Harper hit Rogers for 24 yards to put the ball on the one and on the next play Harper was able to sneak over Leopard added the extra point for the winning margin was good win for Carlen said was disappointed however with all the turnovers We just had too many and it really concerns Although Georgia may have found a tailback in freshman Carnie Norris the Bulldogs still lacked any offensive punch Norris a native of Spartanburg SC led Georgia in rushing with 94 yards even though as a team Georgia had only 87 yards on the ground best offensive series came on a one-play drive on the first play of the game Starting from the Georgia 34 yard line quarterback Jeff Pyburn hit split end Anthony Arnold 18 yards down the middle of the field and Arnold eluded two would-be-tacklers and went the remaining 48 yards for the score The play covered 66 yards really surprised by that play" Carlen said guys were really high and I knew they would be overly aggressive at the start of the South Carolina came back on the next series with its first touchdown Operating mostly on the ground the Gamecocks went 66 yards in 13 plays with quarterback Gary Harper connecting with tight end Willie Scott for a 16-yard scoring play The extra point attempt by Eddie Leopard was blocked by Georgia linebacker Jimmy Payne giving the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead Both defenses stiffen for the remainder of the first quarter but Carolina scored again on its first possession of the second quarter Reserve running back Jeff Kendzior-si alternating with Rogers who hurt his elbow in the second quarter scored from four yards out to give the Gamecocks a 12-7 lead Harper tried to hit split end Zion McKinney on the two-point conversion but the pass South Harper Is In A Class brian bodges Assistant Sports Editor Harper meanwhile was in his own world I approached him for some routine post-game questions and he politely asked for a few extra minutes to finish dressing Then he turned to a nearby teammate he said shaking his head Sunday school lesson this week is about life and Harper even thinking about football anymore He was remembering former teammate Scott Sinclair who died unexpectedly this past week The loss seemed to strike Harper particularly hard He is an intensely religious young man and those who know him have no doubts of his faith Did South Carolina have this loss on its mind Saturday? loved Scott and everyone on this team loved Harper said his emotions swelling South Carolina coach Jim Carlen said the team gave the game ball to middle guard Fred Sinclair older brother of Scott following the game spoke to the team this morning and told them not to worry about he said an unusual family really something By Himself Carolina bobbles into two field goals Georgia also added a touchdown after Scott Woemer bolted 47 yards on a punt return just glad that boy (Woemer) completely Carlen said been gone for Yet South Carolina never lost sight of its game plan The Gamecocks who finished with 283 net yards rushing stayed with its power running game and finally caught up with the Bulldogs Carlen had a word to describe his team bunch has he said have a lot of character that you coach I thought we might have blown the game when we lost the ball on their one but we hung in there and I loved it Chuck Allen an Anderson native who plays defensive tackle said the defense never lost its patience with the offense despite the fumbling problem never lost he said were moving the ball pretty good and I didn't think Georgia could stop us It was just a matter of time Harper admitted the offense got a little frustrated with its mistakes that says a lot for our football team when we play that well and still he said says something about the poise of this team" Harper then turned around to face his individual locker and lowered his head He took a deep breath All of sudden football seem so important wore down defense with 152 yards on 28 carries Tight end Willie Scott caught five passes for 58 yards including a 16-yarder for a touchdown Carlen seemed to be proudest of Rogers believe how much pain playing Carlen said got his shoulder jarred and his arm is bent right now and he straighten it out But the guy keeps going ever notice how Earl Campbell (Houston running back) will come out and get Carlen asked the way Rogers Rogers also made a pretty good receiver When South Carolina scored its third touchdown in the fourth quarter cutting lead to 2(M8 Carlen knew what to do told him I wanted him to catch the two-point Carlen remembered "I knew he was tired and hurting but I also knew we needed those two points He has the best hands in the backfield told him gotta catch that pass or chase you over those Carlen said Rogers made the catch to tie the score and Carolina came back for the game-winning touchdown minutes later when Georgia lost its only fumble of the day For a while however it looked as if no one in the Carolina backfield could handle the ball The Gamecocks lost four fumbles including one on the Georgia one-yard line late in the third quarter South Carolina had watched its early 12-7 lead fall apart in the second quarter as Georgia turned two ATHENS South Garry Harper spoke as pleasantly as he could Saturday but his message was unmistakable he said to converging writers really want to say a whole lot today got a lot on my mind not trying to be difficult but I really feel like Harper a junior quarterback from Hialeah Fla had a day anyone would be proud of He completed 10 of 13 passes for 118 yards and one touchdown during a 27-20 USC win over Georgia The victory boosted the record to 3-1 and South Carolina
