At the present time, those individuals applying for this endorsement are simply required to take a written examination. They are then issued a Motorcycle Learner's Permit which must be held a minimum of 30 days before the actual endorsement is issued. The stipulations of this permit include: 1) driving during daylight hours only, 2) carrying no passengers, and 3) wearing a helmet Those drivers applying for an endorsement on or after June 1 will be required to take a motorcycle skills test in addition to the above listed requirements.

Appointments for these examinations must be scheduled through the local license branches and the applicant will be charged a $5 fee at the time the test is given. Packard said, "As of April 1, approximately 168,700 motorcycle endorsements have been issued, corresponding to approximately 172,500 statewide registered motorcycles. Although it appears that the vast majority of motorcycle riders have obtained the necessary endorsement, we feel certain that there are a number of motorcycle enthusiasts who have not yet met the requirement." MOTORCYCLE SAFETY Spring encourages many outside activities, and one of these is the sport of motorcycling. One of the greatest problems a motorcyclist faces is being seen. Since a majority of auto accidents occur because drivers cannot see one another, then a motorcyclist is going to be less visible than another car.

It behooves each driver to be aware of other drivers and to share the road with each vehicle. Riders of motorcycles have very little protection. If they are bumped even slightly by a car chances are they could be injured seriously or even killed. Last year there were 3,949 motorcycles involved in accidents in Indiana alone. Ninety persons were killed and 3,020 were injured.
