Sherrill has to say about the great war between the States is timely and interesting. Telling of the crossing of the Po-tomao and entering into Pennsylva-nia and of the stirring days which followed, Capt Sherrill furnishes the News and Observer wHh This interesting story: In June, 1863, the Confederate Army, under General Robert E. Lee, crqssed over the Potomac river and we were soon in the State, of Pennsylvania.

Our brigade was compos; ed of the Fifth, Twentieth and Twenty-third. North Carolina regiments which had been commanded by the brave General Samuel. Garland, of Virginia, who fell at the battle of Spartanburg or South Mountain In Maryland, September, 1862. Our brigade en route to Pennsylvania was, under the command of Brigadier General Alfred Iverson, a son of Senator Iverson, of Georgia, and a graduate of West Point. My com-, pany was Company A of the Twelfth North Carolina regiment.

This was the second volunteer regiment in-North Carolina, but our number had been changed by Governor Ellis-when he appointed ten regiments in 1862 and numbered them from one to ten Inclusive. This, of course, moved the number of all the regiments then in service up to 11 and beyond to the twentieth. Our brigade was at this time in General R. E.
